Fast Motions in Biomechanics and Robotics : Optimization and Feedback Control

In the past decades, much progress has been made in the field of walking robots. The current state of technology makes it possible to create humanoid robots that nearly walk like a human being, climb stairs, or avoid small - stacles. However, the dream of a robot running as fast and as elegantly as a human is still far from becoming reality. Control of such fast motions is still a big technological issue in robotics, and the maximum running speed of contemporary robots is still much smaller than that of human track runners. The conventional control approach that most of these robots are based on does not seem to be suitable to increase the running speeds up to a biological level.

Extreme Programming has come a long way since its ?rst use in the C3 project almost 10 years ago. Agile methods have found their way into the mainstream, and at the end of last year we saw the second edition of Kent Beck’s book on Extreme Programming, containing a major refactoring of XP. This year, the 6th International Conference on Extreme Programming and Agile Processes in Software Engineering took place June 18–23 in She?eld. As in the yearsbefore, XP 2005provideda unique forum for industry and academic professionals to discuss their needs and ideas on Extreme Programming and - ile methodologies. These proceedings re?ect the activities during the conference which ranged from presentation of research papers, invited talks, posters and demonstrations, panels and activity sessions, to tutorials and workshops. - cluded are also papers from the Ph.D. and Master’s Symposium which provided a forum for young researchers to present their results and to get feedback. Asvariedastheactivities werethe topicsofthe conferencewhichcoveredthe presentationofnewandimprovedpractices,empiricalstudies,experiencereports and case studies, and last but not least the social aspects of agile methods. The papers and the activities went through a rigorous reviewing process. Each paper was reviewed by at least three Program Committee members and wasdiscussedcarefullyamongtheProgramCommittee.Of62paperssubmitted, only 22 were accepted as full papers.

Entertainment Computing - ICEC 2005 ; 4th International Conference, Sanda, Japan, September 19-21, 2005, Proceedings

First of all, we appreciate the hard work of all the authors who contributed to ICEC 2005 by submitting their papers. ICEC 2005 attracted 95 technical paper submissions, 8 poster submissions and 7 demo submissions, in total 110. This number is nearly equal to ICEC 2004. Based on a thorough review and selection process carried out by 76 international experts from academia and industry as members of the senior and international program committees, a high-quality program was compiled. The program committee consisted of experts from all over the world: 1 from Austria, 3 from Bulgaria, 2 from Canada, 4 from China, 1 from Finland, 4 from France, 10 from Germany, 1 from Greece, 1 from Ireland, 1 from Israel, 1 from Italy, 26 from Japan, 1 from Korea, 4 from The Netherlands, 1 from New Zealand, 1 from Norway, 1 from Singapore, 1 from Thailand, 4 from the UK, and 8 from the USA. In this number, reviewers are included. The final decision was made at the senior program committee meeting based on three reviewers' feedback, available online via the conference management tool. Through earnest and fair discussion at the meeting, 25 technical papers were accepted as long papers and 32 technical papers were accepted as short papers from 95 submitted technical papers. Moreover, 3 poster papers and 5 demo papers were accepted.

However, with regard to remote sensing, a number of challenges caused by difficulties in data acquisition and annotation have not been fully solved yet. Decoupling Control

Decoupling or non-interactive control has attracted considerable research attention since the 1960s when control engineers started to deal with multivariable systems. The theory and design techniques for decoupling control have now, more or less matured for linear time-invariant systems, yet there is no single book which focuses on such an important topic. The present monograph fills this gap by presenting a fairly comprehensive and detailed treatment of decoupling theory and relevant design methods. Decoupling control under the framework of polynomial transfer function and frequency response settings, is included as well as the disturbance decoupling problem. The emphasis here is on special or relatively new compensation schemes such as (true and virtual) feedforward control and disturbance observers, rather than use of feedback control alone. The results are presented in a self-contained way and only the knowledge of basic linear systems theory is assumed of the reader.

Coupled Models for the Hydrological Cycle : Integrating Atmosphere, Biosphere and Pedosphere

Hydrologists, climatologists, soil scientists and environmental engineers are frequently asked to analyse complex environmental problems. It is becoming increasingly apparent that these problems usually involve feedbacks between atmospheric, ecological, and hydrological systems, as well as human society. It is often the feedbacks between systems that are of greatest interest because they may produce unanticipated responses. That is why coupling of different compartments of the Earth system has emerged as a general challenge to the modelling community. This book considers an array of state-of-the-art coupling and modelling concepts. First the relevant Earth system cycles are presented, followed by a discussion on scale issues and multiple equilibria. Inter- and intra-compartmental coupling is addressed, along with a debate on non-linearities and questions of parameterisation. Several applications are presented, where a focus is on cases where the hydrological cycle plays a central role.
