This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the Third International Conference on Image and Signal Processing, ICISP 2008, held in Cherbourg-Octeville, France, in July 2008.The 48 revised full papers and 22 revised poster papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 193 submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on image filtering, image segmentation, computer vision, feature extraction, pattern recognition, graph-based representations, motion detection and estimation, new interfaces, document processing, and signal processing.

After hundreds of years, science has come out of the ivory tower and entered society. Today science is not done with laboratory research alone but by involving different social actors. There are scientists, but also politicians, administrators, entrepreneurs and ordinary people, young and old. Their fears, real or perceived, can put a stop to its development. Their trust and their hopes nourish it and create a climate of expectations that are not always met. In the great narrative of science, the first actors, the scientists, are from time to time destroyers and benefactors, saints or monsters, fathers of the Golem with feet of clay or of Frankestein who turns and destroys. Not infrequently then there are many Sisyphus who continually restart their business - and it is not excluded that in the eyes of some they share with Penelope the habit of undoing at night what they do during the day.
Hypoxia and Exercise
The 14th volume in the series will focus on cutting edge research at the interface of hypoxia and exercise. The work will cover the range from molecular mechanisms of muscle fatigue and muscle wasting to whole body exercise on the world’s highest mountains. State of the art papers on training at high altitude for low altitude athletic performance will also be featured.
Hydrogen Materials Science and Chemistry of Carbon Nanomaterials
The 2005 International Conference “Hydrogen Materials Science and Chemistry of Carbon Nanomaterials” (ICHMS’2005) was held in September 5-11, 2005 in the remarkable city Sevastopol (Crimea, Ukraine) known for its heroic and unusual th fate. In the tradition of the earlier ICHMS conferences, this 9 ICHMS’2005 meeting served as an multidisciplinary forum for the presentation and discussion of the most recent research on transition to hydrogen-based energy systems, technologies for hydrogen production, storage, utilization, materials processing and chemical behavior, energy and environmental problems. The aim of ICHMS’2005 was to provide the wide overview of the latest scientific results on basic research and technological applications of hydrogen interactions with metals and other materials.
Human battle against obesity
Obesity is one of the most common preventable diseases and it is a medical condition in which excess fat has accumulated in the body, mostly in the subcutaneous tissues. Clinical obesity is considered to be present when a person has a body mass index of 30 or over. Obesity results from a chronic positive energy balance regulated by a complex interaction between endocrine tissues and the central nervous system, This activity reviews the pathophysiology of obesity, inflammatory markers secreted by excessive fat deposition in adipose tissue, and their effects on chronic diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, and dyslipidemia.
How does the Galaxy Work? : A Galactic Tertulia with Don Cox and Ron Reynolds

Where many other books focus their attention on singular galactic components or specific driving forces, this title provides a wide overview on the gaseous and stellar components and on the physical mechanisms which maintain the dynamical equilibrium of such a complex system as the Galaxy. The book, intended for graduate students and researchers, provides a valuable overview on the different physical mechanisms which drive the galactic gas-stars feedback.

Group B Coxsackieviruses
This monograph reviews information published since 1997 on the group B coxsackieviruses (CVB), a large and important group of human enteroviruses. The CVB were discovered in the mid-20th century, during the search for other poliovirus types, and within a very few years of this discovery, the CVB had been implicated as causes of human myocarditis and pancreatitis. The study of the CVB is still inextricably linked with the fate of their well-known relatives, the polioviruses, for as poliovirus eradication proceeds around the world, the CVB emerge more prominently as the enteroviruses best suited for continuing studies in enteroviral molecular biology as well as understanding the mechanisms underlying enteroviral pathogenesis. This volume reviews and presents modern views on the spectrum of CVB biologies, from interaction of the virus with its receptor through replication, speciation, and induction of disease.
Groundwater Recharge from Run-off, Infiltration and Percolation
This book first discusses the recharge fluxes relating both to the quantity and quality of groundwater. In order to face the threats to the water supply and to be able to maintain a sustainable water management policy, detailed knowledge is needed in between others on the surface to subsurface transformation link in the water cycle. Secondly, the presentation and comparison of both the traditional and modern approach to determine groundwater recharge is discussed. The traditional approach to determine groundwater recharge, is based on water balance estimates and hydraulic considerations, which yield instantaneous values at best but do not integrate the totality of recharge pathways in time and space. In contrast, environmental tracers do integrate these factors. Finally, the fate of groundwater recharge in the subsurface by hydraulic and geologic means is discussed in detail, in order to stimulate adapted groundwater management strategies and to better assess consequences of climate changes on groundwater resources as a whole.

Globalisation, Poverty and Conflict : A Critical 'Development' Reader
Is ‘development’ passé? Is it merely a by-product or a ‘trickle down’ effect of economic growth, spurred by globalisation? Will poverty simply diminish with increased global markets? This state-of-the-art critical ‘development’ reader deals with these and related questions. Globalisation, Poverty and Conflict examines the inter-relationships between globalisation, poverty and conflict. It complements current debates in the field of development studies and, in an era in which development fatigue seems to have become more profound than ever before, it brings the importance of development once again to the forefront. Achieving the Millennium Development Goals by 2015 is a concrete target which many governments have agreed to work towards.Whether these goals can be realised is another issue. Nonetheless, the Millennium Development Goals have brought more focused attention to development in the past few years and renewed debate about the relationships between the process of globalisation and widespread poverty and the emergence of violent conflicts. The authors in this edited volume discuss these inter-related and highly controversial topical elements of development in a number of chapters organised around three sets of issues: (1) globalisation, inequality and poverty; (2) governance, civil society and poverty; and (3) resource degradation, institutions and conflict. At the same time, I was a junior Brand Manager at Procter & Gamble w- ried about a much more mundane problem: how to keep my products on the shelf. Embedding RFID tags in the products, and RFID readers in the shelf, seemed like the perfect – indeed the only – way to do this. But I needed RFID to be cheaper, better, and standardized in an open system. In early 1999, by sheer chance, I met Brock and Sarma. The result was a potent meeting of minds. I was looking to fund research, and Brock, Sarma and Siu were looking for research funding. Working with Alan Haberman of the Uniform Code Council, one of the founding fathers of the UPC bar code, and Allan Boath of the Gillette C- pany, we developed a plan for a new industry funded research consortium at MIT.

Ghrelin more than hunger hormone
Ghrelin is a stomach hormone that acts as an endogenous ligand of orphan G-protein-coupled receptor. Ghrelin is a 28-amino acid peptide existing in two major forms: n-octanoyl-modified ghrelin, which possesses an n-octanoyl modification on serine-3 and des-acyl ghrelin. Fatty acid modification of ghrelin is essential for ghrelin-induced growth hormone release from the pituitary and appetite stimulation. This acyl-modification of ghrelin is catalysed by ghrelin-O- acyl transferase recently identified.

This short History of the Husserl-Archives offers a fascinating view on the foundation and development of this important research institute and of the Husserliana edition. Father Van Breda’s personal annotations, which are made public for the first time in English here, paint a captivating picture of the rescue of Husserl’s manuscripts and the foundation of the Archives shortly before the second world war. The overview of the further history of the Archives by Thomas Vongehr concentrates on the history of the editorial work and its reception. These two texts present not only a historical account but explain the scientific goals and tasks of the Husserl-Archives and its research.
Genomic Imprinting
Genomic imprinting refers to a recently discovered phenomenon in which the expression pattern of an allele depends on whether that allele was inherited from the mother or the father. This difference in expression strategy correlates with differences in the epigenetic state of the two alleles. The goal of this book is neither to provide a basic introduction to imprinting, nor to provide a comprehensive survey of the current state of the field (which would necessarily span multiple books). Rather, the book covers on some of the more recent advances, with the goal of drawing attention to some of the emerging subtleties and complexities associated with imprinted genes.
Genetic Engineering of Mesenchymal Stem Cells
MSC (mesenchymal stem cells) have been reported to initiate revascularization after injury, to facilitate engraftment of blood-forming stem cells, and to reduce the incidence of graft-vs. host disease through their immune-suppressive qualities. Finally, bone marrow-derived MSC have been reported to home to areas of solid tumor revascularization, and thus may be used as delivery vehicles to target ablative agents into dividing tumor cells. Recently the characteristics of human MSC from adipose (fat) tissue have also been identified. The possibility of repairing tissues, speeding stem cell engraftment, and targeting solid tumors for specific killing, using MSC easily harvested from bone marrow, or better yet, from unwanted fat tissue, holds broad appeal, and is an intriguing possibility that could have dramatic effect on health care. This book has information on how to isolate, grow, and characterize MSC from marrow and fat, and gives important insight into how these cells may be used for gene delivery and cellular therapies in the future. Updates on emerging clinical trials are given.
