Welcome to the proceedings of the 2nd International Symposium on Parallel and Distributed Processing and Applications (ISPA2004) which was held in Hong Kong, China, 13–15 December, 2004. With the advance of computer networks and hardware technology, parallel and distributed processing has become a key technology which plays an imp- tant part in determining future research and development activities in many academic and industrial branches. It provides a means to solve computati- ally intensive problems by improving processing speed. It is also the only - able approach to building highly reliable and inherently distributed applications. ISPA2004 provided a forum for scientists and engineers in academia and indsttry to exchange and discuss their experiences, new ideas, research results, and applications about all aspects of parallel and distributed computing. There was a very large number of paper submissions (361) from 26 countries and regions, including not only Asia and the Pacific, but also Europe and North America. All submissions were reviewed by at least three program or technical committee members or external reviewers. It was extremely di?cult to select the presentations for the conference because there were so many excellent and interesting submissions.
Parallel and Distributed Logic Programming : Towards the Design of a Framework for the Next Generation Database Machines
Povides a clear introduction to parallel and distributed approach to logic programming. It examines the existing models of distributed logic programming, analyses the pros and cons of these models, and proposes an alternative framework for distributed logic programming using extended Petri nets. The book attempts to explore the scope of Petri net models in designing deductive database machines of the next generation.

The technical program was comprehensive and featured keynote speeches, te- nical paper presentations, and exhibitions showcased by industry vendors. The technical program committee was overwhelmed with submissions of papers for presentation, from countries worldwide. We received 242 papers and after - viewing them, based on stringent selection criteria, we accepted 173 papers. The papers in the proceedings focus on parallel and distributed computing viewed from the three perspectives of networking and architectures, software systems and technologies, and algorithms and applications. We acknowledge the great contribution from all of our local and international committee members and - per reviewers who devoted their time in the review process and provided valuable feedback for the authors. PDCAT 2004 could never have been successful without the support and ass- tance of several institutions and many people.

This volume constitutes the refereed proceedings of 13 international workshops held as part of OTM 2008 in Monterrey, Mexico, in November 2008.The 106 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from a total of 171 submissions to the workshops. The volume starts with 19 additional revised poster papers of the OTM 2008 main conferences CoopIS and ODBASE. Metaheuristics for Scheduling in Distributed Computing Environments
