Analyzing uncertainty in civil engineering

This volume addresses the issue of uncertainty in civil engineering from design to construction. Failures do occur in practice. Attributing them to a residual system risk or a faulty execution of the project does not properly cover the range of causes. A closer scrutiny of the adopted design, the engineering model, the data, the soil-construction-interaction and the model assumptions is required. Usually, the uncertainties in initial and boundary conditions are abundant. Current engineering practice often leaves these issues aside, despite the fact that new scientific tools have been developed in the past decades that allow a rational description of uncertainties of all kinds, from model uncertainty to data uncertainty. It is the aim of this volume to have a critical look at current engineering risk concepts in order to raise awareness of uncertainty in numerical computations, shortcomings of a strictly probabilistic safety concept, geotechnical models of failure mechanisms and their implications for construction management, execution, and the juristic question of responsibility. In addition, a number of the new procedures for modelling uncertainty are explained.

Analyzing the availability of fin tech and its role in enhancing the strategic : Performance of Syrian banks using the balanced scorecard

Aims to examine the role of financial technology (FinTech) in enhancing the strategic performance of Syrian banks by analyzing its impact on the four dimensions of the balanced scorecard : financial performance, customer satisfaction, internal process quality, and learning and growth. Amid economic and technological challenges, integrating fintech emerges as a strategic tool to boost operational efficiency, reduce costs, and promote financial inclusion. The study explores the experiences of several Syrian banks in implementing modern financial technologies, such as digital banking and smart payment systems, while evaluating key financial indicators like return on assets (ROA) and return on equity (ROE).

Analyzing Islamic banking trends in Syria and comparing them with islamic banks in the UAE, according to customer size and product type

In the Arabic country there are a lot of peoples follows the Islamic sharia, and these people have avery big investments, and big corporate, and they don’t usually deal or transact with the conventional banks (ribawi banks). So in order to start working with this group of peoples, the first Islamic bank established in the united Arab Emirates in 1975 (Dubai Islamic Bank), with a new products, services, policies, strategies, and it was developed to meet the market needs according to Islamic sharia. Now a day the Islamic banks compete the conventional banks, and eash new products in the conventional banks have an equivalents Islamic products with a specific regulation...

Analyzing computer system performance with Perl::PDQ

Analyzing computer system performance is often regarded by most system administrators, IT professionals and software engineers as a black art that is too time consuming to learn and apply. Finally, this book by acclaimed performance analyst Dr. Neil Gunther makes this subject understandable and applicable through programmatic examples. The means to this end is the open-source performance analyzer Pretty Damn Quick (PDQ) written in Perl As the epigraph in this book points out, Common sense is the pitfall of performance analysis. The performance analysis framework that replaces common sense is revealed in the first few chapters of Part I. The important queueing concepts embedded in PDQ are explained in a very simple style that does not require any knowledge of formal probability theory. Part II begins with a full specification of how to set up and use PDQ replete with examples written in Perl. Subsequent chapters present applications of PDQ to the performance analysis of multicomputer architectures, benchmark results, client/server scalability, and Web-based applications.

Analytic Methods for Design Practice

In the competitive world of modern engineering, rigorous and definite design methodologies are needed. However, many parts of engineering design are performed in either an ad-hoc manner or based on the intuition of the engineer.Analytic Methods for Design Practice is the first book to look at both stages of the design process – conceptual design and detailed design – and detail design methodologies for every step of the entire design process. The book introduces the following analytic design methodologies and explores their usefulness with many mathematical and practical examples: Axiomatic design; Optimization; Design of experiments; Robust design; Structural optimization; Dynamic response optimization; and Multidisciplinary optimization. A chapter of the book is devoted to case studies showing how practical design problems can be solved with analytic design methods based on Professor Park’s experiences of teaching design engineering over the past ten years.

Analysis, Synthesis, and Perception of Musical Sounds : The Sound of Music

Analysis, Synthesis, and Perception of Musical Sounds contains a detailed treatment of basic methods for analysis and synthesis of musical sounds, including the phase vocoder method, the McAulay-Quatieri frequency-tracking method, the constant-Q transform, and methods for pitch tracking with several examples shown. Various aspects of musical sound spectra such as spectral envelope, spectral centroid, spectral flux, and spectral irregularity are defined and discussed. One chapter is devoted to the control and synthesis of spectral envelopes. Two advanced methods of analysis/synthesis are given: "Sines Plus Transients Plus Noise" and "Spectrotemporal Reassignment" are covered. Methods for timbre morphing are given. The last two chapters discuss the perception of musical sounds based on discrimination and multidimensional scaling timbre models.

Analysis of variance for random models, Vol. 2 : Unbalanced data : Theory, methods, applications, and data analysis

Analysis of variance (ANOVA) models have become widely used tools and play a fundamental role in much of the application of statistics today. In particular, ANOVA models involving random effects have found widespread application to experimental design in a variety of fields requiring measurements of variance, including agriculture, biology, animal breeding, applied genetics, econometrics, quality control, medicine, engineering, and social sciences. This two-volume work is a comprehensive presentation of different methods and techniques for point estimation, interval estimation, and tests of hypotheses for linear models involving random effects. Both Bayesian and repeated sampling procedures are considered. Volume I examines models with balanced data (orthogonal models); Volume II studies models with unbalanced data (nonorthogonal models).
