Advances in solid state physics ; Vol. 47
The present volume 47 of the Advances in Solid State Physics contains the written version of a large number of the invited talks of the 2007 Spring Meeting of the Arbeitskreis Festkörperphysik which was held in Regensburg, Germany, from March 26 to 30, 2007 in conjunction with the 71st Annual Meeting of the Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft.It gives an overview of the present status of solid state physics where low-dimensional systems such as quantum dots and quantum wires are dominating. The importance of magnetic materials is reflected by the large number of contributions in the part dealing with ferromagnetic films and particles. One of the most exciting achievements of the last couple of years is the successful application of electrical contacts to and the investigation of single layers of graphene.

Advances in Robot Control : From Everyday Physics to Human-Like Movements
This volume provides a unique collection of papers written in honor of the 70th birthday of Suguru Arimoto who has long been recognized as a pioneer in the field of robot control. A variety of his research is reflected in this book, which includes contributions from leading experts in the field, who have also been closely associated with Suguru Arimoto at various stages in his distinguished career. The book is build around two themes: the physics-based robot control for coping with the so-called everyday physics problems on one hand, and the challenge of reproducing beautiful, human-like movements on the other hand. These themes defined much of Arimoto’s research in the field of robot control and are the cornerstones of his perception of human robotics.

The automatic analysis of images and signals in medicine, biotechnology, and chemistry is a challenging and demanding field. Signal-producing procedures by microscopes, spectrometers, and other sensors have found their way into wide fields of medicine, biotechnology, economy, and environmental analysis. With this arises the problem of the automatic mass analysis of signal information. Signal-interpreting systems which generate automatically the desired target statements from the signals are therefore of compelling necessity. The continuation of mass analyses on the basis of classical procedures leads to investments of proportions that are not feasible. New procedures and system architectures are therefore required. There su- ing oral presentations were then scheduled in a single-track, two-and-a-half-day conference program, summarized in the book that you have before you. In accordance with the stated IDA goal of "bringing together researchers from diverse disciplines," we believe we have achieved an excellent balance of presentationsfromthemoretheoretical-both statistical and machine learning- to the more application-oriented areas that illustrate how these techniques can beusedinpractice. Advances in Human-Robot Interaction
