Building the Inclusive City : Governance, Access, and the Urban Transformation of Dubai

This book is an anthropological urban study of the Emirate of Dubai, its institutions, and their evolution. It provides a contemporary history of disability in city planning from a non-Western perspective and explores the cultural context for its positioning. Three insights inform the author’s approach. First, disability research, much like other urban or social issues, must be situated in a particular place

Building from waste : Recovered materials in architecture and construction

"Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Recover" is the sustainable guideline that has replaced the "Take, Make, Waste" attitude of the industrial age. Based on their background at the ETH Zurich and the Future Cities Laboratory in Singapore, the authors provide both a conceptual and practical look into materials and products which use waste as a renewable resource. It looks into innovative concepts of how materials usually regarded as waste can be processed into new construction elements. The products are organized along the manufacturing processes: densified, reconfigured, transformed, designed and cultivated materials.

Bone : Biology, harvesting, and grafting for dental implants

Dental implant placement often requires bone grafting to ensure sufficient bony support for the implants being placed. Depending on the biologic conditions of the patient, including the level of bone atrophy and the status of the remaining teeth in the mouth, more adjunctive procedures like bone harvesting or sinus grafting may be required. This book covers it all, from the biology of bone and how dental implants work within that framework to the many procedures for harvesting bone and using it to augment sites for implant placement. The different types of bone grafts and membranes are discussed as well as procedures to preserve the alveolar ridge following tooth extraction.

Bluetooth based indoor location positioning system for mobile robot navigation

Positioning objects has been an important topic since it’s needed to locate people, guide them to a certain place, and assist companies and organizations with their assets management. Great applicational opportunities emerge based on the inquiry of Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI). In this research, a positioning system using Bluetooth RSSI is proposed for indoor applications. First, RSSI values are inquired multiple times and the average is taken at multiple points of different distances from the transmitters. Then the distance is determined by the variations of RSSI values respectively to distance variations. Finally, a triangulation algorithm is used to calculate the current location of the receiver.

Biology of Inositols and Phosphoinositides

This volume describes the current status of the biology of inositols and phosphoinositides with an emphasis on the development in the area since the publication of volume 26 in 1996 in this series. The progress made in dissecting the genetics, structure and evolution of the seminal enzyme for synthesis of inositol in the biological system has driven the understanding of the enzyme forward. With the current genomic and proteomic tools in place the new role of inositols, inositol phosphates and phosphoinositides in cell signaling or stress response has been explored. These advances are described.

Biologie und epidemiologie der hormonersatztherapie : Diskussionen zur postmenopausalen gesundheit = Biology and epidemiology of hormone replacement therapy : Discussions on postmenopausal health

The advantages and disadvantages of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) are discussed by a group of experts with regard to the epidemiological evidence. However, the focus of the discussion is the problem of breast cancer risk. Among other things, it is shown that the results derived from epidemiological studies do not coincide with the growth characteristics of these tumors, so that further population studies with the inclusion of pathobiological expertise appear necessary. The benefits and risks of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) are discussed by a group of experts with a view towards the evidence provided by recent epidemiological studies. Although all aspects of HRT indications and contra-indications are reviewed, the particular emphasis of this discussion is on breast cancer. Among other things, it is shown that the evidence on breast cancer provided in epidemiological studies does not match the growth characteristics of the tumors, and that further population research incorporating pathobiological assessments is required.

Biological, chemical, and radiological Terrorism : Emergency preparedness and response for the primary care physician

This book provides sought-after guidance to primary care physicians on preparing for and responding to terrorist events. Chapters offer a fundamental understanding of the epidemiology and relevant clinical aspects of diseases caused by biological agents (anthrax, plague, smallpox, botulism, tularemia, and hemorrhagic viruses), chemical agents (nerve and blister), and radiological agents. The text details how to detect terrorist-caused illness as early as possible, how to provide defensive or preventive therapy, and how to triage and treat ill patients. Emphasis is placed on addressing both the physical and psychological impact on patients and providers.

Biogeography, Time, and Place : Distributions, Barriers, and Islands

Biogeography considers the distribution of biological units over a wide range of scales. The units range from genotypes, populations and species to families and higher taxa. Processes can be local, such as the isolation on islands due to sea-level fluctuations, or large-scale tectonic processes that separates continents and creates oceans. In all processes time is an important factor and by combining data on recent patterns with paleontological data the understanding of the distribution of extant taxa can be improved. This volume focuses on speciation due to isolation in island-like settings, and the evolution of large-scale diversity as the result of origination, maintenance and extinction.

Bioelectricity : A Quantitative Approach

"The authors’ goal in producing this book was to provide an introductory text to electrophysiology, based on a quantitative approach. In attempting to achieve this goal, therefore, the authors have opened the book with a useful, and digestible, introduction to various aspects of the mathematics relevant to this field, including vectors, introduction to Laplace, Gauss’s theorem, and Green’s theorem. This book will be useful for students in medical physics and biomedical engineering wishing to enter the field of electrophysiological investigation. It will also be helpful for biologists and physiologists who wish to understand the mathematical treatment of the processes and signals at the center of the interesting interdisciplinary field.

Biodentine : Properties and clinical applications

A comprehensive guide to BiodentineTM, an innovative biocompatible and bioactive material based on pure tricalcium silicate that can permanently replace dentin and can also serve as a temporary enamel substitute. Although BiodentineTM has been widely used across the world for the past decade, this is the first book to be devoted to its properties, interactions with the soft and hard tissues, and its multiple clinical applications. The coverage encompasses applications in primary and permanent teeth, in specialties as diverse as restorative dentistry, endodontics, paediatric dentistry, dental traumatology, and prosthetic dentistry. BiodentineTM application both in vital pulp therapy and endodontic procedures is illustrated and clinical step by step protocols are provided. The book provides a detailed update on BiodentineTM use to preserve the pulp vitality in direct/indirect pulp capping, pulpotomy and irreversible pulpitis treatment. It also details BiodentineTM use for non-vital teeth treatment in indications such as root/furcation perforation repair, apexification as well as in regenerative endodontic procedures.

Bioceramics and alternative bearings in joint arthroplasty ; 12th BIOLOX® Symposium Seoul, Republic of Korea September 7 - 8, 2007. Proceedings

th ® Dear Colleague and Participant of the 12 International BIOLOX Symposium ® It is an honor for CeramTec to have the BIOLOX Symposium in Asia. The selection of Seoul, Korea as the site was a difficult one due to the fact that there are many wonderful location options in this dynamic and fast growing region of the world. The selection was made easier by the outstanding support of our Symposium Chairman, Prof. Chang, as well as the excellent airline service and meeting facilities present in Seoul. We hope that conducting the Symposium in this region will serve as a foundation for the increased recognition of the potential patient benefits to be derived from the use of ceramics and other alternative bearing technologies in Korea, China, India, Japan and the rest of the countries of the region.
