Immobilisation of DNA on Chips I
the main focus of these two volumes is on the immobilization chemistry, considering the various aspects of the immobilization process itself, since different types of nucleic acids, support materials, surface activation chemistries and patterning tools are of key concern.the focus of the major part of the chapters lies on the coupling chemistry used for DNA immobilization. Successful immobilization techniques for DNA appear to either involve a multi-site attachment of DNA (preferentially by electrochemical and/or physical adsorption) or a single-point attachment of DNA (mainly by surface activation and covalent immobilization or (strept)avidin-biotin linkage).
Imaging Pelvic Floor Disorders
This volume builds on the success of the first edition of Imaging Pelvic Floor Disorders and is aimed at those practitioners with an interest in the imaging, diagnosis and treatment of pelvic floor dysfunction. Concise textual information from acknowledged experts is complemented by high-quality diagrams and images to provide a thorough update of this rapidly evolving field. Introductory chapters fully elucidate the anatomical basis underlying disorders of the pelvic floor. Recent archaeological theory has show that images of the past have carried a particularly strong resonance within modern social groups. This volume explores the immeasurable impact that the phenomenon of archaeology has had on the representation of the past in the modern world. This volume contains the Proceedings of the 13th International Conference on Image Analysis and Processing (ICIAP 2005), held in Cagliari, Italy, at the conference centre “Centro della Cultura e dei Congressi”, on September 6–8, 2005. ICIAP 2005 was the thirteenth edition of a series of conferences organized every two years by the Italian group of researchersa?liated to the International Association for Pattern Recognition (GIRPR) with the aim to bring together researchers in image processing and pattern recognition from around the world. As for the previous editions, conference topics concerned the theory of image analysis and processing and its classical and Internet-driven applications. The central theme of ICIAP 2005 was “Pattern Recognition in the Internet and Mobile Communications Era”. The interest for such a theme was con?rmed by the large number of papers dealing with it, the special session devoted to pattern recognition for computer network security, and the emphasis of two invited talks on Internet and mobile communication issues. ICIAP 2005 received 217 paper submissions. Fifteen papers were collected into the two special sessions dealing with Pattern Recognition for Computer Network Security and Computer Vision for Augmented Reality and Augmented Environments.

This proceedings volume collects the scienti?c presentations of the Scandinavian Conference on Image Analysis, SCIA 2005, which was held at the University of Joensuu, Finland, June 19–22, 2005. The conference was the fourteenth in the series of biennial conferences started in 1980. The name of the series re?ects the fact that the conferences are organized in the Nordic (Scandinavian) countries, following the cycle Sweden, Finland, Denmark, and Norway. The event itself has always been international in its participants and presentations. Today there are many conferences in the ?elds related to SCIA. In this s- uation our goal is to keep up the reputation for the high quality and friendly environment of SCIA. We hope that participants feel that it’s worth attending the conference. Therefore, both the scienti?c and social program were designed to support the best features of a scienti?c meeting: to get new ideas for research and to have the possibility to exchange thoughts with fellow scientists.
Ileo meccanico dell’intestino tenue : Aspetti TC e correlazioni eco-radiografiche = Mechanical ileus of the small intestine : CT aspects and echo-radiographic correlations
Mechanical occlusion of the small intestine is a frequently encountered clinical problem, whose clinical-instrumental management is made difficult by the complexity of the mechanisms responsible for the occlusive picture. The role of the radiologist is to promptly guide the therapeutic process on the basis of a correct interpretation of the iconographic pictures. The purpose of this volume - the only one of its kind - is to relate the pathophysiology of occlusion to imaging. The rich iconography, which ranges from clinical onset to resolution, emphasizes the role of multidetector computed tomography with intravenous contrast, which is the current gold standard. However, the correlations with the echo-radiographic methods are not forgotten, which retain an effective diagnostic role, with a low biological and economic cost. The mechanical ileus of the small intestine is a striking example in support of the dream of many professionals: that, that is, to have a figure of a fine abdominal emergency radiologist, an expert in organ and disease and not only in the machine, as often unfortunately it happens.

This volume, dedicated to medical students who live the exciting moment of initiation into the medical profession, is structured in eleven didactic modules, which are developed according to the typical sequence of problem solving revised in the light of the EBM method (presentation of problem, formulation and testing of hypotheses, formulation of clinical and background questions, comparison with international literature, answer to questions, application to the clinical case and possible formulation of recommendations for practice, case management). Linked to them are eight in-depth analyzes structured as compendia of evidence (Evidence compendia, in the style of Clinical Evidence), in which a series of background questions relating to complex pathologies, of high prevalence and of considerable interest for the hospital internist and of the territory. Although fundamentally designed for teaching, the book can also be a useful tool for all those who practice medicine by placing the man with his disease at the center of the diagnostic-therapeutic procedure.
