Anti-Obesity drugs
As a chronic and relapsing disease, obesity impairs metabolism and causes diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and cancer. Although behavioral modification is important for the treatment of obesity, it is difficult to achieve an ideal weight or sustain the process of long-term weight loss. Therefore, the obesity control guidelines strongly recommend lifestyle interventions along with medical treatment for patients who are overweight. There is sufficient evidence supporting that pharmacotherapy in combination with behavior-based interventions can result in significant weight loss and improvement of the health.
Antifouling Compounds
Increasing awareness of the deleterious effects of toxic components in antifouling coatings has raised interest in the potential for nontoxic alternatives. This book examines how marine organisms from bacteria to invertebrates and plants use chemicals to communicate and defend themselves. Chemicals that prevent colonisation of living surfaces are particularly pertinent to antifouling technology and may inspire new solutions. The challenge is to identify such compounds, identify the means for sustainable production and incorporate them into coatings to give long-term antifouling efficacy.
Anthropological Perspectives on Environmental Communication
Through anthropological and ethnographic analyses, this collection addresses how interests, values, and ideologies affect dialogue and sustainability work. Drawing on studies from three continents – Europe, North America, and South America – the paradoxes and the plurality of meanings associated with the creation of sustainable futures are explored. The book focuses on how communication practices collide with organizational frameworks, customary practices, livelihoods, and landscape.
Analysis and Development of Sustainable Urban Production Systems
Manufacturing of products in urban production sites is connected to unique potentials, yet also to specific challenges. Urban factories can provide functional diversity and contribute positive impacts to a city. The concept of urban production receives rising attention in research and industry and it is recognized in its interdisciplinary nature. With a holistic approach from both the urban perspective and the factory perspective, negative impacts can be minimized, positive effects enabled and mutually beneficial, symbiotic combinations created. The presented framework and methods for the evaluation and implementation of sustainable urban production systems allow the assessment of impacts and provide the means to control and utilize the unique strengths of urban factories for cities and industry. This will allow a structured derivation of methods and measures from the concept of urban production for producing enterprises and the urban stakeholders.
An assessment framework for compliance with international space law and norms : Promoting equitable access and Use of space for emerging actors
proposes a framework for assessing countries’ levels of compliance with international space law and norms. It begins by exploring the development of two movements – the evidence-based policymaking and programming movement, and the rise of ratings and rankings research – and their growth across various disciplines. The analysis suggests that such efforts are useful in gauging the behavior of countries in space according to how well they adhere to existing space law and norms. To date, there is no comprehensive, periodic, and systematic measure of countries’ efforts to comply with space law and norms; this work endeavors to fill that gap by offering a framework in which to assess compliance.
Ambiguities in Decision-oriented Life Cycle Inventories: The Role of Mental Models and Values
Shows for the first time how mental models and values influence this attribution in the life cycle inventory step of LCA. One of the key findings is that the different management rules for a sustainable use of materials must be taken into account for the attribution of material and energy flows to a product. Otherwise, improvement options recommended by an LCA might turn out to even worsen the environmental situation if reassessed from a meta-perspective. As a consequence of this book, the claim of unambiguitiy (‘objectivity’) of the life cycle inventory must be abandoned. A group-model building process for LCA is developed that allows one to grasp the decision makers' mental models and values in the inventory analysis on a case- and situation-specific basis. Only by this, LCA results will become relevant in a decision-making process. Two case studies on the modelling of recycling and other end-of-life options of aluminium windows and beech wood railway sleepers in LCA complement the methodological part.
Alternative concrete - geopolymer concrete : Emerging research and opportunities
Focuses on fly ash-based alkali-activated geopolymer concrete, its production and characteristic properties. The re-use of waste materials and industrial by-products, such as fly ash, is not only economically of interest but also helps to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. The carbon footprint of these materials is much lower than that of concrete using ordinary Portland cement. They thus offer new sustainable solutions to the construction industry.

The design balances heritage conservation with contemporary architectural expression, creating a space that respects the cultural fabric of Damascus while addressing future growth.Key elements include increasing station capacity, integrating sustainable design strategies, and enhancing passenger flow. Renewable energy use, passive ventilation, and green spaces are central to reducing environmental impact and improving user comfort. يركّز مشروع التخرج هذا على إعادة تصميم المحطة الجنوبية للقطارات في دمشق، الواقعة في منطقة القديهدف المشروع إلى الحفاظ على الهوية التاريخية للمحطة القديمة مع تطويرها وتوسيعها لتلبية احتياجات النقل الحضري المعاصر. يجمع التصميم بين صون التراث والتعبير المعماري الحديث، ليخلق فضاءً يحترم النسيج الثقافي لدمشق ويستجيب في الوقت نفسه لمتطلبات النمو المستقبلي. تشمل العناصر الأساسية زيادة القدرة الاستيعابية للمحطة، ودمج استراتيجيات التصميم المستدام، وتحسين حركة المسافرين. كما يعتمد المشروع على استخدام الطاقة المتجددة، والتهوية الطبيعية، وإضافة المساحات الخضراء لتقليل الأثر البيئي وتعزيز راحة المستخدمين.

AiREAS is an initiative focused on the multidisciplinary co-creation of healthy cities using the core human value of human health and air quality as guiding principle for profound regional innovation. The unique group process that followed uses the complexity of the city of Eindhoven as living lab. It is an anthropology based initiative that invites directly to the same table of core innovative responsibility the local government, innovative business partners, scientific insights and reseach, and civilian participation.

Agroecological transitions : From theory to practice in local participatory design
There is wide agreement on the need to change the prevalent agricultural models, given their negative impacts and their incompatibility with current societal issues. Agroecological transition has been promoted as a potential solution to the ecological, social and economic problems generated by these models. It however involves a systemic, multi-scale and transdisciplinary process. Due to this complexity, the overall picture of what farms and food systems “actually are” and “might be” may not be apparent at the individual level. Yet individuals’ knowledge and values provide complementary insights on how to proceed in deepening ecological modernisation. Expertise can also provide landmarks to be considered in that process. Because local stakeholders’ experience and skills are key resources in the adaptation and adoption of agroecological transition, new conceptual and methodological frameworks and tools have to be developed to support them in the design process of such a complex transition. This book presents feedback from the ‘Territorial Agroecological Transition in Action’- TATA-BOX research project, which was devoted to these specific issues.
