Geomatics Solutions for Disaster Management

Natural and anthropogenic disasters have caused a large number of victims and significant social and economic losses in the last few years. There is no doubt that the risk prevention and disaster management sector needs drastic measures and improvements in order to decrease damage and save lives of inhabitants. Effective utilization of satellite positioning, remote sensing, and GIS in disaster monitoring and management requires research and development in numerous areas: data collection, access and delivery, information extraction and analysis, management and their integration with other data sources (airborne and terrestrial imagery, GIS data, etc.), data standardization, organizational and legal aspects of sharing of remote sensing information. This book provides researchers and practitioners with a good overview of what is being developed in this topical area.

Geographic information metadata for spatial data infrastructures : Resources, interoperability and information retrieval

Metadata play a fundamental role in both DLs and SDIs. Commonly defined as "structured data about data" or "data which describe attributes of a resource" or, more simply, "information about data", it is an essential requirement for locating and evaluating available data. Therefore, this book focuses on the study of different metadata aspects, which contribute to a more efficient use of DLs and SDIs. The three main issues addressed are: the management of nested collections of resources, the interoperability between metadata schemas, and the integration of information retrieval techniques to the discovery services of geographic data catalogs (contributing in this way to avoid metadata content heterogeneity).

Genetic Basis for Respiratory Control Disorders

The objective of the book is to supply state-of-the-art contributions about all aspects of respiratory control genetics, from the molecular to the system level. The book aims to review the full spectrum of available knowledge, which starts with early physiological studies in health and disease in humans and studies in rodents that suggested a hereditary component to respiratory control. The spectrum extends to recent work elucidating crucial molecular aspects of respiratory control development, from early embryonic specifications in the neural tube to the function of respiratory rhythm generators.

Generative programming and component engineering ; 4th International conference, GPCE 2005, Tallinn, Estonia, September 29 - October 1, 2005, Proceedings

Generative Programming and Component Engineering (GPCE) is a leading - searchconferenceonautomaticprogrammingandcomponentengineering. These approaches to software engineering have the potential to revolutionize software development as automation and components revolutionized manufacturing. The conference brings together researchers and practitioners interested in adva- ing automation for software development. It is also a premier forum for cro- fertilization between the programming language and software engineering - search communities. GPCEaroseasajointconference, mergingthepriorconferenceonGenerative and Component-Based Software Engineering (GCSE) and the Workshop on - mantics, Applications, andImplementationofProgramGeneration(SAIG). The proceedingsofthepreviousGPCEconferenceswerepublishedintheLNCSseries of Springer as volumes2487,2830, and 3286.In 2005 GPCE wasco-locatedwith the International Conference on Functional Programming (ICFP) and the s- posium on Trends in Functional Programming (TFP), re?ecting the vigorous interaction between the functional programming and generative programming research communities. GPCE and ICFP are both sponsored by the Association for Computing Machinery. The quality and breadth of the papers submitted to GPCE 2005 was impr- sive. All 86 papers, including 5 papers for tool demonstrations, were rigorously reviewed by 17 highly quali?ed Program Committee members. The members of the Program Committee ?rst provided in-depth individual reviews of the s- mitted papers, and then debated the merits of the papers through an extended electronicProgramCommitteemeeting. After much(friendly) argument,25r- ular papers and 2 tool demonstration papers were selected for publication. The ProgramCommittee provided extensive technical feedback to the authors of the submittedpapers.Theconferenceprogramwascomplementedwiththreeinvited talks, three extended tutorials, and three all-day workshops.

Gender, Health and Ageing : European Perspectives on Life Course, Health Issues and Social Challenges

The objective of this book is to provide an overview of gender, health and ageing. Important theoretical concepts, such as life course and "Lebenslagen" in old age, or differences in men's health, are introduced. It is increasingly important to build a European basis of knowledge, to conduct discussions on European research findings, and to develop European research frameworks. In this volume, central theoretical debates on gender impacts on life course and old-age health, and vital issues of health research in the context of gender and old age are introduced. Specific aspects, such as the impact of gender and age on cardiovascular health, elder abuse and mental health, or care between gender relations, gender roles and gender constructs, are pointed out.

Game Theory and Mutual Misunderstanding : Scientific Dialogues in Five Acts

This book consists of five acts and two interludes, which are all written as dialogues between three main characters and other supporting characters. Each act discusses the epistemological, institutional and methodological foundations of game theory and economics, while using various stories and examples. A featured aspect of those discussions is that many forms of mutual misunderstanding are involved in social situations as well as in those fields themselves. One Japanese traditional comic story called the Konnyaku Mondo is representative and gives hints of how our thought is constrained by incorrect beliefs. Each dialogue critically examines extant theories and common misunderstanding in game theory and economics in order to find possible future developments of those fields.

Galaxies and How to Observe Them

Satisfies the need for a modern, comprehensive review in combining the three major aspects: the physical background on the nature and data of galaxies, the relevant instrumentation and viewing techniques, and finally the targets and their individual appearance in telescopes of various apertures. To illustrate the latter, a comprehensive sample of galaxies, including quasars, groups and clusters of galaxies is presented. This combination of theoretical knowledge and practical information guarantees successful observing sessions. The book could become a standard source on galaxy observing for all kinds of amateur observers, from the beginner to the experienced.

Fuzzy Group Theory

This book presents an up-to-date account of research in important topics of fuzzy group theory. The book concentrates on the theoretical aspects of fuzzy subgroups of a group. It also includes applications to some abstract recognition problems and to coding theory. The book begins with basic properties of fuzzy subgroups. The notions of ascending series and descending series of fuzzy subgroups are used to define nilpotency of a fuzzy subgroup. The material presented in this book makes it a good reference for graduate students and researchers working in fuzzy group theory.

Fuzzy Database Modeling of Imprecise and Uncertain Engineering Information

This book presents recent advances for imprecise and uncertain engineering information from the point of view of fuzzy database modeling. The topics include fuzzy conceptual data modeling of engineering information, conversion of the fuzzy conceptual models, and database implementation of the fuzzy conceptual data models. Some major data and database models for engineering information modeling are investigated. The main novel aspect of this book is that the book focuses on imprecise and uncertain industrial information modeling viewed from databases and fuzzy database technologies viewed from industrial applications. This may be useful for people involved in theory research, design implementation, and application development of intelligent engineering databases.

Fundamentals of statistics with fuzzy data

This research monograph presents basic foundational aspects for a theory of statistics with fuzzy data, together with a set of practical applications. Fuzzy data are modeled as observations from random fuzzy sets. Theories of fuzzy logic and of random closed sets are used as basic ingredients in building statistical concepts and procedures in the context of imprecise data, including coarse data analysis. The monograph also aims at motivating statisticians to look at fuzzy statistics to enlarge the domain of applicability of statistics in general.
