Indiscrete Thoughts
Indiscrete Thoughts gives a glimpse into a world that has seldom been described, that of science and technology as seen through the eyes of a mathematician. The era covered by this book, 1950 to 1990, was surely one of the golden ages of science as well as of the American university. Cherished myths are debunked along the way as Gian-Carlo Rota takes pleasure in portraying, warts and all, some of the great scientific personalities of the period —Stanislav Ulam (who, together with Edward Teller, signed the patent application for the hydrogen bomb), Solomon Lefschetz (Chairman in the 1950s of the Princeton mathematics department), William Feller (one of the founders of modern probability theory), Jack Schwartz (one of the founders of computer science), and many others.
Indirect Sampling
This book is the reference on indirect sampling and the generalised weight share method. It contains the different developments done by the author on these subjects. The theory surrounding them is presented, but also different possible applications that drive its interest. The reader will find in this book the answer to questions that come, inevitably, when working in a context of indirect sampling.
Indefinite Linear Algebra and Applications
This book is dedicated to relatively recent results in linear algebra with indefinite inner product. It also includes applications to differential and difference equations with symmetries, matrix polynomials and Riccati equations. These applications have been developed in the last fifty years, and all of them are based on linear algebra in spaces with indefinite inner product. The latter forms a new more or less independent branch of linear algebra and we gave it the name of indefinite linear algebra. This new subject in linear algebra is presented following the lines and principles of a standard linear algebra course. This book has the structure of a graduate text in which chapters of advanced linear algebra form the core. This together with the many significant applications and accessible style will make it widely useful for engineers, scientists and mathematicians alike.

The 39th volume of Séminaire de Probabilités is a tribute to the memory of Paul André Meyer. His life and achievements are recalled in this book, and tributes are paid by his friends and colleagues. This volume also contains mathematical contributions to classical and quantum stochastic calculus, the theory of processes, martingales and their applications to mathematical finance and Brownian motion. These contributions provide an overview on the current trends of stochastic calculus.

Improving Inclusive Education through Universal Design for Learning
Provides an analysis of how the educational strategy of Universal Design for Learning can stimulate the process of inclusive education in different educational-cultural contexts and different areas of the educational system. The findings of the research deepen the conception of inclusive education and present an analysis of factors that are significant for developing the educational system as well as providing evidence-based recommendations for educational practice. The research for this work was done in four European countries with various historical-cultural contexts: Lithuania and Poland underwent a transformation of the educational systems at the turning point in their political system, shifting from a strictly centralized Soviet policy to a liberal and democratic education system; Austria has experienced changes in social stratification and a need for cultural harmonisation arising from active national migration processes, whereas Finland has been gradually developing a socio-democratic model of national welfare.
Improving concrete and mortar using modified ash and slag cements
Presents the results of a study of high-tech concrete on composite Portland cement and slag Portland cement. The possibilities of significantly improving the properties of cements and concrete with the introduction of superplasticizers and hardening activators are shown. Experimental dependences that make it possible to predict the properties of concrete and mortars and to design mixtures with given properties are given.
Implementing Models in Quantitative Finance : Methods and Cases
This book puts numerical methods into action for the purpose of solving concrete problems arising in quantitative finance. Part one develops a comprehensive toolkit including Monte Carlo simulation, numerical schemes for partial differential equations, stochastic optimization in discrete time, copula functions, transform-based methods and quadrature techniques. The content originates from class notes written for courses on numerical methods for finance and exotic derivative pricing held by the authors at Bocconi University since the year 2000. Part two proposes eighteen self-contained cases covering model simulation, derivative valuation, dynamic hedging, portfolio selection, risk management, statistical estimation and model calibration. It encompasses a wide variety of problems arising in markets for equity, interest rates, credit risk, energy and exotic derivatives.

Immunoinformatics
Immunoinformatics is an emerging subdiscipline of bioinformatics. It utilizes mathematics, information science, computer engineering, genomics, proteomics and immunological methods to bridge immunology and informatics. Similar to bioionformatics which became a driving force in genome research, immunoinformatics enables data-driven research strategies and systems approaches that aim at understanding the networks regulating the immune system. Considering the breath of topic, Immunoinformatics was composed to provide a cross-section of research ranging from data integration, epitope predictions to systems level applications. In ten chapters experts in the field introduce and discuss research strategies for immunologists and bioinformaticians who wish to endeavour existing and new approaches to gain insight into the workings of the immune system.

Imaging for Detection and Identification
The dynamic interaction between world-renowned scientists from the usually disparate communities of pure mathematicians and applied sci- tists which occurred at our seven previous ASI’s continued at this meeting. The fusion of basic ideas in mathematics, radar, sonar, biology, and ch- istry with ongoing improvements in hardware and computation offers the promise of much more sophisticated and accurate detection and identi?cation capabilities than currently exist. Coupled with the dramatic rise in the need for surveillance in innumerable aspects of our daily lives, brought about by hostile acts deemed unimaginable only a few short years ago, the time is ripe for image processing scientists in these usually diverse ?elds to join together in a concerted effort to combat the new brands of terrorism. This ASI was one important initial step.
