Surface Effects in Magnetic Nanoparticles

The book is aimed to provide an overview of progress in the understanding of surface properties and surface driven effects in magnetic nanoparticles through recent results of different modelling, simulation and experimental investigations. Its intended audience is Ph.D. students and researchers in materials science. Magnetic nanoparticles have been the subject of continuous and growing interest, from both fundamental and technological points of view, in the last 50 years, since the pionering work of Louis Niel. Nanoparticles are unique physical objects with remarkable magnetic properties which differ greatly from their parent massive materials. They are due to finite size effects of the magnetic core, related to the reduced number of spins cooperatively linked within the particle, and to surface and interface effects, related to the lack of coordination for the surface ions, inducing broken exchange bonds which can result in frustration and spin disorder.

Supersymmetric Mechanics ; Vol.1 : Supersymmetry, Noncommutativity and Matrix Models

This is the first volume in a series of books on the general theme of Supersymmetric Mechanics; the series is based on lectures and discussions held in 2005 and 2006 at the INFN-Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati. The selected topics include supersymmetry and supergravity, the attractor mechanism, black holes, noncommutative mechanics, super-Hamiltonian formalism and matrix models. All lectures are intended for beginners at the graduate level and nonspecialists from related fields of research and a substantial effort was made to incorporate in the extensive write-ups the results of the animated discussion sessions which followed the individual lectures.

Superplumes : Beyond Plate Tectonics

Provides a concise overview of our understanding of the entire mantle, its evolution since early differentiation and the consequences of superplumes for earth surface processes. The balanced, international authorship of the 18 contributions has produced a state-of-the-science report on the emerging concept of superplumes and has documented the potential of superplumes to serve as a testable model for future studies. The topic of superplume dynamics has been treated from different angles covering the sub-disciplines of geology, geochemistry, petrology as well as geophysics (including mineral physics, seismic tomography and mantle dynamics). For instance, it is shown how transport of heat via superplumes, huge stable pipes connecting the high-temperature core with the surface land mass, could have caused mass extinctions and drastic environmental change.

Sugar substitute stevia

Added sugars are a controversial and hotly debated topic. Consumption of added sugars has been implicated in increased risk of a variety of chronic diseases including obesity, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) as well as cognitive decline and even some cancers. Stevia is a naturally sourced, zero-calorie sweetener that has been used as a natural sugar substitute and flavoring ingredient for hundreds of years...

Sudden Deaths in Custody

Sudden in-custody restraint deaths have emerged as a critical and imp- tant problem for police, correctional, and medical care workers. Sudden Deaths in Custody specifically addresses sudden in-custody deaths that occur after a violent confrontation.

Sub-threshold Design for Ultra-Low Power Systems

Although energy dissipation has improved with each new technology node, because SoCs are integrating tens of million devices on-chip, the energy ex pended per operation has become a critical consideration in digital and ana log integrated circuits. The focus of this book is sub-threshold circuit design, which involves scaling voltages below the device thresholds.

Substructuring Method for Civil Structural Health Monitoring

Investigates the substructuring technology in structural health monitoring (SHM) to improve the accuracy and efficiency of the present SHM methods. SHM has been developed for monitoring, evaluation, and maintenance of civil structures. As the civil structures are usually large scale and a large number of sensors are deployed on a structure, accurate evaluation and maintenance of civil structures are always time-consuming. The book establishes a fundamental framework of substructuring method for the fast analysis of finite element (FE) model and monitoring data. Several practical civil structures are used for illustration.

Substrate Noise Coupling in RFICs

The book reports modeling and simulation techniques for substrate noise coupling effects in RFICs and introduces isolation structures and design guides to mitigate such effects with the ultimate goal of enhancing the yield of RF and mixed signal SoCs . This is particularly critical when process feature sizes scale down to the nano meter range.

Substance abuse and addiction

Illicit drug abuse has reached an epidemic level in the world. Drug overdose has become the leading cause of injury-related deaths since 2008 due to the recent surge of opioid overdose by heroin, controlled prescription drugs, and normethadones synthetic opioids. Synthetic designer drugs such as synthetic cathinone (“bath salts”) and synthetic cannabinoids (“Spice” and “K2”) continue to emerge and attract recreational users. This research is going to tackle drug abuse by shedding the light on Syrian prisoners Over the past 20 years or so, the drug misuse scenario has seen the emergence of both prescription-only and over-the-counter medications being reported as ingested for recreational purposes.

Subspace Methods for System Identification

the mathematical preliminaries are dealt with: numerical linear algebra; system theory; stochastic processes; and Kalman filtering. The second part explains realization theory, particularly that based on the decomposition of Hankel matrices, as it is applied to subspace identification methods. Two stochastic realization results are included, one based on spectral factorization and Riccati equations, the other on canonical correlation analysis (CCA) for stationary processes. Part III uses the development of stochastic realization results, in the presence of exogenous inputs, to demonstrate the closed-loop application of subspace identification methods CCA and ORT (based on orthogonal decomposition).

Subsidiarity and Economic Reform in Europe

Subsidiarity in the European Union, as the guiding principle of decision-making "close to the people", is often motivated and discussed from a predominantly political perspective. In this book, twenty-five renowned economic researchers and policy experts draw the demarcation between national and European policies from an economic viewpoint. Insights from economic theory and empirical research are used both to analyse the assignment of policies between the EU and its Member States and to identify appropriate levels of decision-making. Four key areas of the renewed Lisbon strategy are highlighted for their policy relevance: education and innovation, the internal market, corporate taxation, and regional and transport policy.

Subseafloor Biosphere Linked to Hydrothermal Systems : TAIGA Concept

This book is the comprehensive volume of the TAIGA (“a great river ” in Japanese) project. Supported by the Japanese government, the project examined the hypothesis that the subseafloor fluid advection system (subseafloor TAIGA) can be categorized into four types, TAIGAs of sulfur, hydrogen, carbon (methane), and iron, according to the most dominant reducing substance, and the chemolithoautotrophic bacteria/archaea that are inextricably associated with respective types of TAIGAs which are strongly affected by their geological background such as surrounding host rocks and tectonic settings. Sub-seafloor ecosystems are sustained by hydrothermal circulation or TAIGA that carry chemical energy to the chemosynthetic microbes living in an extreme environment.
