Given the increasing importance of a globally interconnected world, driven by modern digital services and the need for fast and reliable access to digital resources, communication networks are one of the key infrastructures in today’s society. In this scenario, fiber optics and optical devices play a leading role, as they allow for unprecedented growth in our capacity to cope with the ever-increasing traffic demand. Optical transmission solutions range from high-speed networks based on coherent detection and advanced modulation formats for long-haul-level communications, to networks still relying on traditional intensity modulation and direct detection receivers for short-reach communications, down to intra-data center scenarios.

Machine learning and cybernetics play an important role in many modern electronic, computer and communications systems. Automated processing of information by these systems requires intelligent analysis of various types of data and optimal decision making. In recent years, we have witnessed a rapid expansion of research and development activities in machine learning and cybernetics. To provide opportunities for researchers in these areas to share their ideas and foster collaborations, the International Conference on Machines and Cybernetics (ICMLC) has been held annually since 2002. The conference series has achieved a great success in attracting a large number of paper submissions and participants and enabling fruitful exchanges among academic and industrial researchers and postgraduate students. In 2005, the conference (ICMLC 2005) received 2461 full paper submissions and the Program Committee selected 1050 of them for presentation. It is especially encouraging that the conference is attracting more and more international attention.

this year in Kyoto and to publish the proceedings as a volume of the Lecture Notes in Computer Science series. The workshop was our ?rst trial in that two major academic society groups on security in Japan, viz. ISEC and CSEC, jointly organized it; ISEC is a te- nical group on information security of the Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers (IEICE), and CSEC is a special interest group on computer security of the Information Processing Society of Japan (IPSJ). It was Ryoichi Sasaki, the former head of CSEC, who proposed holding such an international workshop in Japan for the ?rst time, two years ago. The two groups supported his idea and started organizing the workshop. CSEC has its annual domestic symposium, the Computer Security Symposium (CSS), in - tober for three days, and we decided to organize the workshop prior to CSS this year.

Advanced Techniques in Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining
This explosion is a result of the growing use of electronic media. But what is data mining (DM)? A Web search using the Google search engine retrieves many (really many) definitions of data mining. We include here a few interesting ones. One of the simpler definitions is: “As the term suggests, data mining is the analysis of data to establish relationships and identify patterns” [1]. It focuses on identifying relations in data. Our next example is more elaborate: An information extraction activity whose goal is to discover hidden facts contained in databases. Using a combination of machine learning, statistical analysis, modeling techniques and database technology, data mining finds patterns and subtle relationships in data and infers rules that allow the prediction of future results. Typical applications include market segmentation, customer profiling, fraud detection, evaluation of retail promotions, and credit risk analysis .
