Information Retrieval Technology ; Vol. 4182 ; 3rd Asia Information Retrieval Symposium, AIRS 2006, Singapore, October 16-18, 2006, Proceedings
Asia Information Retrieval Symposium (AIRS) 2006 was the third AIRS conf- ence in the series established in 2004.The ?rst AIRS washeld in Beijing, China, and the 2nd AIRS was held in Cheju, Korea. The AIRS conference series traces its roots to the successful Information Retrieval with Asian Languages (IRAL) workshop series which started in 1996. The AIRS series aims to bring together international researchers and dev- opers to exchange new ideas and the latest results in information retrieval. The scope of the conference encompassed the theory and practice of all aspects of information retrieval in text, audio, image, video, and multimedia data. Wearehappyto reportthatAIRS2006received148submissions,thehighest number since the conference series started in 2004. Submissions came from Asia and Australasia, Europe, and North America. We accepted 34 submissions as regular papers (23%) and 24 as poster papers (16%). We would like to thank all the authors who submitted papers to the conf- ence, the seven area chairs, who worked tirelessly to recruit the program c- mittee members and oversaw the review process, and the program committee members and their secondary reviewers who reviewed all the submissions.

BythisImeanthattherehas beenanexplicit recognition that distinct skills and perspectives are required to make the whole effort of designing usable computer systems work well. Thus people with backgrounds in Computer Science (CS) and Software Engineering (SE) joined with people with ba- grounds in various behavioral science disciplines (e. g. , cognitive and social psych- ogy, anthropology) in an effort where all perspectives were seen as essential to creating usable systems. But while the ?eld of HCI brings individuals with many background disciplines together to discuss a common goal - the development of useful, usable, satisfying systems - the form of the collaboration remains unclear.

Fuzzy Database Modeling of Imprecise and Uncertain Engineering Information
This book presents recent advances for imprecise and uncertain engineering information from the point of view of fuzzy database modeling. The topics include fuzzy conceptual data modeling of engineering information, conversion of the fuzzy conceptual models, and database implementation of the fuzzy conceptual data models. ETAPS 2005 was the eighth instance of the European Joint Conferences on Theory and Practice of Software. ETAPS is an annual federated conference that was established in 1998 by combining a number of existing and new conf- ences. This year it comprised ?ve conferences (CC, ESOP, FASE, FOSSACS, TACAS), 17 satellite workshops (AVIS, BYTECODE, CEES, CLASE, CMSB, COCV, FAC, FESCA, FINCO, GCW-DSE, GLPL, LDTA, QAPL, SC, SLAP, TGC, UITP), seven invited lectures (not including those that were speci?c to the satellite events), and several tutorials. We received over 550 submissions to the ?ve conferences this year, giving acceptance rates below 30% for each one. The events that comprise ETAPS address various aspects of the system - velopment process, including speci?cation, design, implementation, analysis and improvement. The languages, methodologies and tools which support these - tivities are all well within its scope. Di?erent blends of theory and practice are represented, with an inclination towards theory with a practical motivation on the one hand and soundly based practice on the other. Many of the issues involved in software design apply to systems in general, including hardware s- tems,andtheemphasisonsoftwareisnotintendedtobeexclusive.

Foundations of security analysis and design III : FOSAD 2004/2005 tutorial lectures
The increasing relevance of security to real-life applications, such as electronic commerce and Internet banking, is attested by the fast-growing number of - search groups, events, conferences, and summer schools that address the study of foundations for the analysis and the design of security aspects. The “Int- national School on Foundations of Security Analysis and Design” (FOSAD, see http://www.sti.uniurb.it/events/fosad/)has been one of the foremost events - tablishedwiththegoalofdisseminatingknowledgeinthiscriticalarea,especially for young researchers approaching the ?eld and graduate students coming from less-favoured and non-leading countries. The FOSAD school is held annually at the Residential Centre of Bertinoro (http://www.ceub.it/), in the fascinating setting of a former convent and ep- copal fortress that has been transformed into a modern conference facility with computing services and Internet access. Since the ?rst school, in 2000, FOSAD hasattractedmorethan250participantsand50lecturersfromallovertheworld.

Enterprise interoperability : New challenges and approaches
Interoperability: the ability of a system or a product to work with other systems or products without special effort from the user is a key issue in manufacturing and industrial enterprise generally. It is fundamental to the production of goods and services quickly and at low cost at the same time as maintaining levels of quality and customisation. Interoperability is achieved if internal and external collaborators can interact on at least three levels: data, applications and business enterprise (through the architecture of an enterprise model and making allowance for the semantics of both partners). Not only a problem of software and IT technologies, it implies support for communication and transactions between different organisations that must be based on shared business references. Today, a new and important consideration must be taken into account – economic business evaluation and the definition of dissemination policy.
