How to Improve the Results of Peripheral Nerve Surgery

All over the world research is going on to improve the outcome of the treatment of peripheral nerve lesions. Questions over questions arise. Is the autologeous nerve grafting still the golden standard in bridging defects? Have alternative techniques to overcome defects reached a level to replace autografting? To which length are they effective? What is the role of allografting? Are there still indications for vascularized nerve grafts? What can be expected from end to side coaptation? Does it exist at all? Under what conditions useful recoveries can be achieved? Are there new developments in physical medicine and physiotherapy? Can the quality of recovery be influenced by surgery on muscles to provide a better equilibrium of forces? To what extent cerebral plasticity may be exploited to improve functional results? The contributions in this book give answers to all of these questions.

Hepatocellular Cancer : Diagnosis and Treatment

Recent advances in the use of ultrasound and computed tomography, in new drugs and drug combinations, as well as with increasingly successful liver transplantation have transformed not only our understanding of hepatocellular cancer (HCC), but also our clinical management of the disease. In Hepatocellular Cancer: Diagnosis and Treatment, highly experienced clinicians-many from Dr. Thomas Starzl's renowned liver transplant team at the University of Pittsburgh-present a fully synthesized practical approach to HCC patient management, including an up-to-date literature review. Their presentation includes all the latest developments in the diagnosis and treatment of primary liver cancer. A summary chapter details for physicians the diagnostic and therapeutic decision-making process for dealing with such problems as incidental tumors in the liver transplant, the role of neo-adjuvant chemotherapy, intra-arterial vs intravenous therapy, the uses of embolization, and the significance of portal vein thrombus. A value-added compact disk containing a companion ebook version of Hepatocellular Cancer: Diagnosis and Treatment is included for downloading and use in the reader's PC or PDA. Authoritative and highly practical, Hepatocellular Cancer: Diagnosis and Treatment captures for physicians the recent exciting changes in our understanding of hepatocellular cancer, focusing on today's optimal diagnostic methods, novel therapeutics, and day-to-day best management practices.

Hand transplantation

This book presents the global experimental and clinical experience on hand transplantation and all types of other composite tissue allografts so far performed. A complete review of all aspects of these innovative and ground-breaking procedures is clearly presented in 15 different sections. They include the experimental basis of hand transplantation, strategies for selecting ideal candidates and preparing successful hand transplantation programmes, surgical techniques, most effective immunosuppressive drug regimes, analysis of the unique immunological behaviour of these transplants and rehabilitation protocols to achieve optimal sensory and motor recovery. Each section is dedicated to a special issue, such as psychological and medicolegal implications, brain remodelling after hand transplantation and introduction of a new scoring system for overall comprehensive outcome evaluation. A complete list of composite tissues allografts currently carried out around the world is reported in detail, including the face, abdominal wall, uterus, larynx and knee joint.

Frailty and Kidney Disease : A Practical Guide to Clinical Management

This book is of importance in nephrology, specifically nephrogeriatrics, since frailty is a condition affecting many elderly patients and which is becoming increasingly common in medical practice. As such, there is a considerable need for information to assist professionals treating these patients. The book includes chapters on the frailty syndrome (definition, evaluation and treatment), the main geriatric syndromes (gait disorder, falls, incontinence, and delirium), the main renal syndromes (acute renal injury, chronic kidney disease) as well as dialysis and kidney transplant, and the relationship between geriatrics and renal syndromes.

Filgrastim in clinical oncology : Guarding against neutropenia

Granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) has driven the attention of researchers as a therapeutic agent for curing patients suffering from neutropenia. Despite the successful use of G-CSF, it currently requires daily injections, which are inconvenient, expensive, and distressing for children. Therefore, an alternative strategy for using G-CSF for treatment is needed. Understanding the G-CSF structure, expression, mechanism of action, and how it induces neutrophils mobilization is crucial to producing promising cancer therapy. The ability of G-CSF to mobilize hematopoietic stem cells from the bone marrow into the blood circulation was consequently exploited and altered the practice of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

Feldman and Pike's vitamin D; Vol. 2 : Health, disease and therapeutics

Covers the evidence for new roles of vitamin D, ranging from organ transplantation to cancer, diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease, multiple sclerosis, and renal disease. The coverage is appropriately broad, drawing on aspects of internal medicine, pediatrics, nutrition, orthopedics, oncology, neurology, obstetrics and gynecology, and immunology, as well as, new areas for vitamin D including sports medicine, opthalmology, veterinary medicine and ICU care – including COVID-19. Clinical researchers will gain a strong understanding of the molecular basis for a particular disease and better understand future directions for research in this still-growing field.

Difficult Decisions in Thoracic Surgery : An Evidence-Based Approach

Brief chapters are devoted to a specific question or decision in general thoracic surgery that is difficult or controversial. Although some of the content may be available in major thoracic texts, rarely are such questions posed specifically and analyzed according to the level of supporting evidence available. This book is unique in aiming to address the issues in the most clear and informed manner possible; the chapters contain both evidence-based recommendations and descriptions of surgeons’ personal practices based on their experience and the published literature. Chapters are organized around clearly identified recommendations. This provides uniformity to the presentations, making possible the identification of useful material at a glance. A general introduction describes evidence-based data and their use, decision analytic models, and how both physicians and patients make decisions currently. Over 50 different topics are then presented, including a review of available evidence and a general discussion of recommended practice.

Dendritic Cells in Clinics

Great advances have taken place in basic research and the clinical usefulness of dendritic cells (DCs). It has now been clearly established, for instance, that these cells play a crucial role in immune responses against infectious diseases and cancers. Antigen-presenting DCs are widely distributed in the body and regulate both immunity and immune tolerance. Experimental studies have provided important insights into DCs and how they can be used for treating animal models of various diseases that occur in humans. The role of these cells in pathogenesis and the treatment of human diseases is elaborately set forth in this valuable book. Researchers in the field are optimistic that DCs, already in use for treating patients with cancers, soon can be used therapeutically for patients with chronic infections, autoimmune diseases, and allergic manifestations. This volume provides a working definition of DCs and also explains the phenotypes and functions of DCs so that these can be readily understood not only by clinicians but by immunologists, researchers, and students as well.

Cytokines and Cancer

This volume provides a comprehensive review of the current knowledge on cytokines and cancer. Cytokines play a variety of roles in cancer, both as components of pathogenetic mechanisms, as well as agents used in the treatment of certain malignancies. The volume is divided in two sections. Section one focuses on current developments in the basic science field with particular emphasis on novel mechanisms of cytokine actions in malignant cells. The second section deals with translational and clinical research in the field, and many of the chapter authors were among the first to introduce several cytokines in the treatment of certain tumors.

Crossroads between Innate and Adaptive Immunity

This compilation presents minireviews derived from work presented at the Aegean Conference, which occurred October 9-14, 2005 at the Hilton Conference. Center on the island of Rhodes, Greece. The conference included sessions dedicated to host recognition of and response to pathogens, innate immune networks, antigen presentation, and adaptive immune responses, each headlined by a leading scientist at the forefront of that field. The intimate networking and interaction of dendritic cells, T cells, B cells, NK cells, NK-T cells, and complement during the host response to pathogens and tumors are only now starting to be elucidated.
