Methods and Models in Transport and Telecommunications : Cross Atlantic Perspectives
One aspect of the new economy is a transition to a networked society, and the emergence of a highly interconnected, interdependent and complex system of networks to move people, goods and information. An example of this is the in creasing reliance of networked systems (e. g. , air transportation networks, electric power grid, maritime transport, etc. ) on telecommunications and information in frastructure. Many of the networks that evolved today have an added complexity in that they have both a spatial structure , they are located in physical space but also an a spatial dimension brought on largely by their dependence on infor mation technology. They are also often just one component of a larger system of geographically integrated and overlapping networks operating at different spatial levels. An understanding of these complexities is imperative for the design of plans and policies that can be used to optimize the efficiency, performance and safety of transportation, telecommunications and other networked systems. In one sense, technological advances along with economic forces that encourage the clustering of activities in space to reduce transaction costs have led to more efficient network structures.
Metaheuristics for Hard Optimization : Methods and Case Studies
Metaheuristics for Hard Optimization comprises of three parts. The first part is devoted to the detailed presentation of the four most widely known metaheuristics: the simulated annealing method, tabu search, the evolutionary algorithms, and ant colony algorithms. Each one of these metaheuristics is actually a family of methods, of which the essential elements are discussed. In the second part, the book presents some other less widespread metaheuristics, then, extensions of metaheuristics and some ways of research are described . The problem of the choice of a metaheuristic is posed and solution methods are discussed. The last part concentrates on three case studies from telecommunications, air traffic control, and vehicle routing.

Nowadays we are facing numerous and important imaging problems: nondestructive testing of materials, monitoring of industrial processes, enhancement of oil production by efficient reservoir characterization, emerging developments in noninvasive imaging techniques for medical purposes - computerized tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), positron emission tomography (PET), X-ray and ultrasound tomography, etc. In the CIME Summer School on Imaging (Martina Franca, Italy 2002), leading experts in mathematical techniques and applications presented broad and useful introductions for non-experts and practitioners alike to many aspects of this exciting field. The volume contains part of the above lectures completed and updated by additional contributions on other related topics: a general presentation and introduction (Moscoso), X-ray tomography (Natterer), Electromagnetic imaging (Dorn, Bertete-Aguirre, Papanicolaou), coherent imaging in telecommunications in a multiple input-multiple output setup (Dorn), polarization based optical imaging (Moscoso), topological derivatives used in shape reconstruction related to inverse scattering problems (Carpio, Rapún), Point interactions (Dell’Antonio, Figari, Teta).

Internationalisation of European ICT Activities : Dynamics of Information and Communications Technology
The internationalisation of information and communication technologies has accelerated since the 1990s in Europe and worldwide. Taking a close look at the empirical analysis of competitive trade positions, trends in foreign direct investment and the internationalisation of research and development in ICT brings many new insights about the expansion, innovation and adjustment in the EU’s most dynamic sector. Moreover, the analysis discusses case studies on key players in ICT and suggests major policy conclusions for a field considered fundamental in the context of the EU’s Lisbon Agenda. The theoretical and empirical analysis gives a new and differentiated picture of European ICT where the links between telecommunications dynamics, software innovation and digital services are crucial. Outsourcing, insourcing and offshoring are natural elements of a new digital international division of labour which require reforms in both the EU member countries and at the supranational level.

Over the years, PATMOS has evolved into an important European event, where - searchers from both industry and academia discuss and investigate the emerging ch- lenges in future and contemporary applications, design methodologies, and tools - quired for the developmentof upcominggenerationsof integrated circuits and systems. The technical program of PATMOS 2005 contained state-of-the-art technical contri- tions, three invited talks, a special session on hearing-aid design, and an embedded - torial. The technical program focused on timing, performance and power consumption, as well as architectural aspects with particular emphasis on modeling, design, char- terization, analysis and optimization in the nanometer era. The Technical Program Committee, with the assistance of additional expert revi- ers, selected the 74 papers to be presented at PATMOS. The papers were divided into 11 technical sessions and 3 poster sessions. As is always the case with the PATMOS workshops, the review process was anonymous, full papers were required, and several reviews were carried out per paper. Beyond the presentations of the papers, the PATMOS technical program was - riched by a series of speeches offered by world class experts, on important emerging research issues of industrial relevance. Prof. Jan Rabaey, Berkeley, USA, gave a talk on “Traveling the Wild Frontier of Ulta Low-Power Design”, Dr. Sung Bae Park, S- sung, gave a presentation on “DVL (Deep Low Voltage): Circuits and Devices”, Prof.

The 5th International Workshop on Information Security Applications (WISA 2004) was held in Jeju Island, Korea during August 23-25, 2004. The workshop was sponsored by the Korea Institute of Information Security and Cryptology (KIISC), the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) and the Ministry of Information and Communication (MIC). The aim of the workshop is to serve as a forum for new conceptual and - perimental research results in the area of information security applications from the academic community as well as from the industry. The workshop program covers a wide range of security aspects including cryptography, cryptanalysis, network/system security and implementation aspects. The programcommittee received169 papersfrom 22 countries,andaccepted 37 papers for a full presentation track and 30 papers for a short presentation track. Each paper was carefully evaluated through peer-review by at least three members of the programcommittee. This volume contains revised versions of 36 papers accepted and presented in the full presentation track. Short papers were only published in the WISA 2004 pre-proceedings as preliminary versions and are allowed to be published elsewhere as extended versions. Welcome to ICOIN 2005,the International Conference on Information Netwo- ing, held at Ramada Plaza Jeju Hotel, Jeju Island, Korea during January 31– February2,2005.ICOIN2005followedthesuccessofpreviousconferences.Since 1986, the conference has provided a technical forum for various issues in inf- mation networking. The theme of each conference re?ects the historic events in the computer communication industry. (Please refer to www.icoin2005.or.kr for details.) The theme of ICOIN 2004, “Convergence in Broadband and Mobile Networking,” was used again for ICOIN 2005 since we believed it was ongoing. This year we received 427 submissions in total, which came from 22 co- tries. Upon submission, authors were asked to select one of the categories listed in the Call for Papers. The most popular category chosen was network se- rity, followed by mobile networks and wireless LANs. Other areas with strong showings included QoS and resource management, ad hoc and sensor networks, and wireless multimedia systems. From the outset, we could see where recent research interest lay and could make sure that the theme was still going in the right direction.
