Mayo clinic infectious disease case review : With board-style questions and answers

Addresses many of the current-day illnesses seen by primary care clinicians and infectious diseases specialists. A case presentation format is used for all 54 chapters, and this framework serves as a wonderful educational tool that mirrors, in many respects, the objectives of a “case conference” format. The dozens of authors from different areas of our specialty have ensured that a robust clinical examination of specific infection syndromes has been included. In addition, the Question and Answer section solidifies the educational benefits for all levels and types of clinicians who seek an understanding of disease diagnosis, management, and prevention. A well-recognized characteristic of infectious diseases specialists is our focus on epidemiology, and this trait has served us well in developing successful clinical careers.

Irritable Bowel syndrome I.B.S

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a chronic gastrointestinal disorder with a range of symptoms that significantly affect quality of life for patients. Is currently one of the most common disorders of the digestive system in the Western society? Almost 2 out of 10 people suffer from IBS, and it is associated with abdominal pain, bloating and altered stool consistency and imposes a heavy burden for the affected patients. The difficulty of differential diagnosis and its treatment may significantly delay initiation of optimal therapy. Hence, persons with IBS often self-treat symptoms with non-prescribed pharmacological regimens and/or complementary and alternative medicines (CAM) and by modifying diet and daily activities.

Insulin Resistance and Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome : Pathogenesis, Evaluation, and Treatment

This book highlights the recent transition of PCOS from an infertility disorder with a diagnosis based on ovarian tissue histology to a more complex clinical entity, a metabolic disorder in which insulin resistance plays a central role. With an expert panel of authors, each chapter provides an up-to-date and balanced overview of PCOS, paying special attention to the central role of insulin resistance in the syndrome’s pathogenesis and in the management of its reproductive and metabolic abnormalities.

Immunology, phenotype first : How mutations have established new principles and pathways in immunology

This monograph deals with the impact of classical genetics in immunology, prov- ing examples of how large immunological questions were solved, and new fields opened to analysis through the study of phenotypes, either spontaneous or induced. As broad as biology has become, there are those who do not fully understand what the genetic approach is, and how it differs fundamentally from most of the methods available to natural scientists.

Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome

Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome draws together the experiences of the leading experts in the field. Through their work in all aspects of congenital cardiac care, they have become acknowledged as the world leaders in the diagnostic, medical and social needs of children born with hypoplasia of the left heart. More importantly, for the first time the book recognizes the crucial contributions made by the families of these children. Diagnostic possibilities, options for medical and surgical treatment and a history of their evolution are looked into and the book also gives an insight into the longer-term effects that treatment has on the child and its family. As well as including contributions from medical clinicians, nurses, and psychologists, for the first time a forum is provided for the parents, who have complemented the contributions from the medical and nursing experts to provide a holistic view of the lives and experiences of the children born with this condition. No other publication, currently available, offers such a comprehensive overview of the care required by a child with hypoplasia of the left heart. This book provides the ultimate reference for anyone treating children with this heart condition, particularly paediatric cardiac clinical and nursing teams, radiologists and radiographers, obstetric medical and nursing teams, psychologists, pathologists, geneticists and workers in social care.

Headache and Chronic Pain Syndromes

Headache and Chronic Pain Syndromes provides a case-based approach to state-of-the-art evaluation and treatment of patients with common chronically painful conditions. Offering strategies for rapidly evaluating and treating pain complaints by body region, this innovative title also provides patient educational handouts that explain the diagnosis and treatment in easy-to-understand language for each condition. Tools for implementing both medication and non-medication therapies, such as exercises and relaxation techniques, are also included. Each chapter opens with typical presentations of three to five common patient scenarios, including pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients. A targeted approach for patient assessment is provided and applied to each scenario, showing how to rapidly identify important clues to distinguish among common diagnoses, including both benign and malignant causes of pain. Standard treatment regimens are then provided for each patient, along with patient-friendly educational flyers for each common pain condition. Figures and drawings help provide ready identification of these common chronic pain syndromes.

Handbook of Giftedness in Children : Psychoeducational Theory, Research, and Best Practices

In one comprehensive resource, the Handbook of Giftedness in Children brings together leading experts from the fields of psychology and education, combining theory and applied empirical research on such crucial topics as conceptualization, types of intelligence, developmental considerations, and ethical and legal concerns. Particular attention is given to social and family contexts, and evidence-based strategies and interventions offer solid guidelines on assessment, curriculum design, and encouraging and nurturing talent – from preschool through adolescence.

Handbook of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry

This book takes a practical biopsychosocial approach to helping readers navigate this complex terrain.Early chapters trace the roots of psychosomatic medicine and consultation-liaison psychiatry, the nature of psychiatric diagnosis, and explain the clinical, educational, administrative, and research functions of CL psychiatry, and walk the reader through the basics of psychiatric consultation. They discuss common reasons for psychiatric consultation and the immediate management of urgent conditions such as agitation and suicidal behavior. From there, chapters feature case vignettes, practice guidelines, and specific information on topics as varied as postpartum depression, withdrawal symptoms, and chronic pain. And in keeping with this real-world orientation, contributors identify cultural issues, analyze ethical concerns, and flag the potential conflicts of interest that practitioners must recognize and prevent for successful practice.

Genome editing in neurosciences

Innovations in molecular biology are allowing neuroscientists to study the brain with unprecedented resolution, from the level of single molecules to integrated gene circuits. Chief among these innovations is the CRISPR-Cas genome editing technology, which has the precision and scalability to tackle the complexity of the brain. This Colloque Médecine et Recherche has brought together experts from around the world that are applying genome editing to address important challenges in neuroscience, including basic biology in model organisms that has the power to reveal systems-level insight into how the nervous system develops and functions as well as research focused on understanding and treating human neurological disorders.

Foundations and novel approaches in data mining

Data-mining has become a popular research topic in recent years for the treatment of the "data rich and information poor” syndrome. Currently, application oriented engineers are only concerned with their immediate problems, which results in an ad hoc method of problem solving. Researchers, on the other hand, lack an understanding of the practical issues of data-mining for realworld problems and often concentrate on issues that are of no significance to the practitioners. In this volume, we hope to remedy problems by (1) presenting a theoretical foundation of data-mining, and (2) providing important new directions for data-mining research. A set of well respected data mining theoreticians were invited to present their views on the fundamental science of data mining.

Fatigue Science for Human Health

Fatigue is quite a familiar sensation, one that everyone is likely to have experienced. Its molecular and neural mechanisms have not yet been elucidated, however, probably because of the complicated nature of its causes. To provide a broad forum for discussion, the International Conference on Fatigue Science was organized, the first being held in 2002 in Sandhamn, Sweden, and the second in 2005 in Karuizawa, Japan. Subsequently it was decided that the papers presented at the two conferences should be collected and incorporated in this pioneering work, Fatigue Science for Human Health. The book summarizes fatigue researchers' achievements, explains the status of the research on fatigue, and presents perspectives on remedies for chronic fatigue and chronic fatigue syndrome. The result is an authoritative guide to recent progress in the molecular and neural mechanisms of fatigue and in the development of the ways to prevent and overcome fatigue and chronic fatigue.
