New Frontiers in Social Innovation Research

Interest in social innovation continues to rise, from governments setting up social innovation 'labs' to large corporations developing social innovation strategies. Yet theory lags behind practice, and this hampers our ability to understand social innovation and make the most of its potential. This collection brings together work by leading social innovation researchers globally, exploring the practice and process of researching social innovation, its nature and effects. Combining theoretical chapters and empirical studies, it shows how social innovation is blurring traditional boundaries between the market, the state and civil society, thereby developing new forms of services, relationships and collaborations. It takes a critical perspective, analyzing potential downsides of social innovation that often remain unexplored or are glossed over, yet concludes with a powerful vision of the potential for social innovation to transform society.

New Concepts of Antiviral Therapy

Antiviral drugs are important tools for treatment or prevention of viral infections. These drugs were first used for monotherapy, but nowadays combinations of antiviral agents are often part of a standard treatment as evidenced by e.g. HAART (highly active antiretroviral therapy). However, in almost every case of antiviral therapy, drug resistant viruses appear. In addition, the low oral bioavailability, toxicity and the number of severe side effects still pose significant problems. All of the latter issues limit the clinical usefulness and drive the need for improved antiviral strategies. These strategies include new drugs and targets, novel modes of action, vector-based treatments and even the block of defined genes by inhibiting mRNA formation (siRNA).

Neurology Oral Boards Review : A Concise and Systematic Approach to Clinical Practice

Rapid recall of vast amounts of factual material is the key to success in both the Neurology Oral Board examination and in everyday patient care. In Neurology Oral Boards Review: A Concise and Systematic Approach to Clinical Practice, Eroboghene E. Ubogu offers a comprehensive review of relevant topics and examination strategies needed to pass the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) Part II (Oral) exam, complete with up-to-date, evidence-based guidelines on diagnosis and management in clinical neurology. The author has written the book specifically to satisfy the requirements of the ABPN, with clinical case vignettes designed to allow the examinee to localize the plausible disease process, to indicate which investigations may help in establishing a diagnosis, to deduce treatment plans, and to make a prognosis, including patient and family counseling. The emergency cases test the ability to think critically when faced with a neurological emergency, putting a premium on resuscitation, patient safety, and rapid high-yield investigations. The general neurology cases reflect the breadth of disorders experienced in hospital and outpatient settings. The author also provides a detailed description of the oral ABPN examination and suggests a study regimen that takes into account the difficulties of allotting time to prepare while in post-residency training or practice.

NEURO-COVID-19 : Neuroinvasive potential and neurological complications of SARS-CoV-2

From the earliest days of the COVID-19 pandemic, there have been reports of significant neurological and psychological symptoms following SARS-CoV-2 infection. This research paper is designed to examine the potential psychoneuroendocrine pathogenic mechanisms by which SARS-CoV-2 elicits psychiatric sequelae, as well as to posit potential pharmacologic strategies to address and reverse these pathologies. Following a brief overview of the presence and prevalence of neuropsychiatric manifestation in COVID-19 patients, we address mechanisms by which SARS-CoV-2 could enter or otherwise elicit changes in the CNS.

Neuroactive Steroids in Brain Function, Behavior and Neuropsychiatric Disorders : Novel Strategies for Research and Treatment

Over the past few decades the involvement of neurosteroids in brain function and mental health has attracted much interest, not only from a neuroscience perspective, but also from clinical and therapeutic aspects. In recent years, much of the research has focused on the multifunctional position of neurosteroids in the nervous system. The areas that have been explored, in particular, are the cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in the activity of neurosteroids in the brain, the role of neurosteroids in brain development, neurodegeneration and neuroplasticity, and their pharmacological properties. The large increase in the number of publications highlights this amplified interest in neurosteroids. Over the last 7 years at least 400 papers have been published describing the putative role of neurosteroids in the modulation of basic brain function and in the etiology and treatment of psychiatric and neurological disorders.

Neonatal Cranial Ultrasonography

It provides important information on brain maturation in the (preterm) neonate and enables the detection of frequently occurring brain anomalies in both preterm and full term neonates. Furthermore, it can be repeated as often as is necessary. In this edition of Neonatal Cranial Ultrasonography, the focus is on the basics of the technique, from patient preparation through to screening strategies and the classification of abnormalities. Many new ultrasound images have been included to reflect the improvements in image quality since the first edition. Essential information is provided about both the procedure itself and the normal ultrasound anatomy. Standard technique using the anterior fontanelle as the acoustic window is described and illustrated, but emphasis is also placed on the value of supplementary acoustic windows.
