Content based image retrieval systems

With an advent of technology, huge collection of digital images is formed as repositories on crime prevention, medical diagnosis, military, face finding, satellites and remote sensing. The task of searching for similar images in the repository is difficult. The data is growing enormously which makes it difficult to store and manage. The traditional image retrieval technique is inefficient in retrieving these images. Content-based image retrieval is an approach from data mining community, which provides the solution of managing this huge quantity of data. In this research, a Content-Based Image Retrieval (CBIR) system has been developed using color and texture as retrieval features from the image repository. The system allows the user to search for an image based on any of the two features alone or in combination by assigning weights to the features. The histogram and color moments approach is used to extract the color feature, texture feature is extracted using statistical moments and co-occurrence matrix method and the shape feature is extracted using the morphological operations. The images and the extracted feature vectors are stored in the Pickle file. The system is robust as it provides search based on the multiple features. The performance of the system was evaluated by analyzing the retrieval results using precision and recall.

Computational intelligence for agent-based systems

In these last years the digital technology explosion has spawned so many new lifestyle models that the boundaries between "real" and "digital" are fiercely debated. This scenario has deeply changed the viewpoint about computer applications: computers become smaller, cheapest and hugely distributed in wired or unwired networks, applications become so flexible and intelligent as to tailor its communication facilities in order to increase the usability of the system. Such data-intensive, unstructured spaces featured by minimal or no centralized control flow, present a challenge for traditional methods of analysis, design and integration of advanced, distributed and intelligent computer systems. Within this challenge, an important role is played by two important research areas : Fuzzy Technology, thanks to its ability to exploit the tolerance for imprecision to achieve tractability and Agent Technology, thanks to its nature to employ agent-wise communities to carry out complex goals by means of smart interaction, cooperation, and pro-activeness.

Cognitive Supervision for Robot-Assisted Minimally Invasive Laser Surgery

This thesis lays the groundwork for the automatic supervision of the laser incision process, which aims to complement surgeons’ perception of the state of tissues and enhance their control over laser incisions. The research problem is formulated as the estimation of variables that are representative of the state of tissues during laser cutting. Prior research in this area leveraged numerical computation methods that bear a high computational cost and are not straightforward to use in a surgical setting. This book proposes a novel solution to this problem, using models inspired by the ability of experienced surgeons to perform precise and clean laser cutting. It shows that these new models, which were extracted from experimental data using statistical learning techniques, are straightforward to use in a surgical setup, allowing greater precision in laser-based surgical procedures.

Low Thermal Expansion Glass Ceramics

Describes the fundamental principles, the manufacturing process, and applications of low thermal expansion glass ceramics. The composition, structure, and stability of polycrystalline materials having a low thermal expansion are described, and it is shown how low thermal expansion glass ceramics can be manufactured from appropriately chosen glass compositions. Examples illustrate the formation of this type of glass ceramic by utilizing normal production processes together with controlled crystallization. Thus glass ceramics with thermal coefficients of expansion of less than 0.3 x 10(-6)K(-1) can be obtained. Even for the mass production of high-quality cooktop panels (Ceran®., oven windows, and other household appliances a high reproducibility of the properties is achieved. Special glass ceramics (Zerodur®. for technological and scientific applications such as high-precision optics or large astronomical mirrors are likewise discussed. The completely revised edition also features new sections on glass-ceramic applications, with details on their performance, CDC-grinding, and laser gyroscopes containing Zerodur®..

LMI Approach to Analysis and Control of Takagi-Sugeno Fuzzy Systems with Time Delay

A fuzzy system is, in a very broad sense, any fuzzy logic-based system where fuzzy logic can be used either asthebasisfor the representation of different forms of system knowledge or the model for the interactions and relationships among the system variables. Fuzzy systems have proven to be an important tool for modeling complex systems for which, due to complexity or imprecision, classical tools are unsuccessful. There have been diverse fields of applications of fuzzy technology from medicine to management, from engineering to behavioral science, from vehicle control to computational linguistics, and so on. Fuzzy modeling is a conjunction to understand the s- tem’s behavior and build useful mathematical models. Different types of fuzzy models have been proposed in the literature, among which the Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy model is a rule-based one suitable for the accurate approximation and identi?cation of a wide class of nonlinear systems.

Laser in restorative dentistry

The application of lasers in restorative dentistry has revolutionized dental treatments, offering enhanced precision, reduced discomfort, and improved clinical outcomes. Lasers have become a valuable tool in procedures such as cavity preparation, caries removal, tooth whitening, and composite resin curing. Their ability to selectively target diseased tissue while preserving healthy structures minimizes trauma and promotes faster healing. Moreover, lasers offer a less invasive alternative to traditional mechanical methods, often eliminating the need for anesthesia. This technology's versatility allows for its use in both hard and soft tissue treatments, including gingival recontouring and managing peri-implant diseases. As laser technology continues to advance, its integration into restorative dental practices offers significant potential for improved patient care, greater procedural efficiency, and long-term durability of restorations. Future developments in laser applications are expected to expand their role, making them an indispensable asset in modern dentistry.

Chasing the Chinese dream : Four decades of following China’s war on poverty

This book explores the historical, cultural and philosophical contexts that have made anti-poverty the core of Chinese society since Liberation in 1949, and why poverty alleviation measures evolved from the simplistic aid of the 1950s to Xi Jinping’s precision poverty alleviation and its goal of eliminating absolute poverty by 2020. The book also addresses the implications of China’s experience for other developing nations tackling not only poverty but such issues as pandemics, rampant urbanization and desertification exacerbated by global warming. The first of three parts draws upon interviews of rural and urban Chinese from diverse backgrounds and local and national leaders. These interviews, conducted in even the remotest areas of the country, offer candid insights into the challenges that have forced China to continually evolve its programs to resolve even the most intractable cases of poverty.
