Language in our brain : The origins of a uniquely human capacity

Friederici describes the basic language functions and their brain basis; the language networks connecting different language-related brain regions; the brain basis of language acquisition during early childhood and when learning a second language, proposing a neurocognitive model of the ontogeny of language; and the evolution of language and underlying neural constraints. She finds that it is the information exchange between the relevant brain regions, supported by the white matter tract, that is the crucial factor in both language development and evolution.

Multiple sclerosis is one of the most frequent causes of chronic disability in young adults. It mainly affects individuals between 20 and 50 years of age, with a peak of incidence around the age of 30. This disease is characterized by the presence of demyelinating lesions of an inflammatory nature disseminated in the central nervous system. The different localization of these lesions is at the basis of the variability of clinical symptoms which can be characterized by motor, sensory, neurovegetative and cognitive disorders. The latter concern about half of the patients affected by this pathology and have a significant impact on the personal, family and work situation of these patients.

Click chemistry

In chemical synthesis, click chemistry is a class of simple atomic economy reactions commonly used to join two selected molecular entities. Click chemistry is not one specific reaction, but describes a method for generating products that follow examples in nature, which also generates substances by joining small modular units. In many applications, click interactions that join a biomolecule and a reporter molecule. Click chemistry is not limited to biological conditions: the concept of a 'click' reaction has been used in protein chemistry, pharmacokinetics, and many biomimetic applications. However, they have been made remarkably useful in the discovery, localization and qualification of biomolecules.

Biomimetic neural learning for intelligent robots : Intelligent systems, cognitive robotics, and neuroscience

This book presents research performed as part of the EU project on biomimeticmultimodal learning in a mirror neuron-based robot (MirrorBot) and contribu-tions presented at the International AI-Workshop on NeuroBotics. The over-all aim of the book is to present a broad spectrum of current research intobiomimetic neural learning for intelligent autonomous robots. In this book we show the development of newtechniques using cell assemblies, associative neural networks, and Hebbian-typelearning in order to associate vision, language and motor concepts. We havedeveloped biomimetic multimodal learning and language instruction in a robotto investigate the task of searching for objects. As well as the research performedin this area for the MirrorBot project, the second part of this book incorporatessignificant contributions from other research in the field of biomimetic robotics.This second part of the book concentrates on the progress made in neuroscienceinspired robotic learning approaches (in short: NeuroBotics). We hope that this book stimulates and encourages new research in this in-teresting and dynamic area.

Advances in Unmanned Aerial Vehicles : State of the Art and the Road to Autonomy

There has been tremendous emphasis in unmanned aerial vehicles, both of fixed (airplanes) and rotary wing (vertical take off and landing, helicopters) types over the past ten years. Applications span both civilian and military domains, the latter being the most important at this stage. This edited book provides a solid and diversified reference source related to basic, applied research and development on small and miniature unmanned aerial vehicles, both fixed and rotary wing. As such, the book offers background information on the evolution of such vehicles over the years, followed by modeling and control fundamentals that are of paramount importance due to unmanned aerial vehicle model complexity, nonlinearity, coupling, inhirent instability and parameter values uncertainty. Advanced Experimental Methods For Noise Research in Nanoscale Electronic Devices

The approach described is to create methods for experimental observations of noise sources, their localization and their frequency spectrum, voltage-current and thermal dependences. Our current knowledge of measurement methods for mesoscopic devices is summarized to identify directions for future research, related to downscaling effects. The directions for future research into fluctuation phenomena in quantum dot and quantum wire devices are specified. Nanoscale electronic devices will be the basic components for electronics of the 21st century. From this point of view the signal-to-noise ratio is a very important parameter for the device application. Since the noise is also a quality and reliability indicator, experimental methods will have a wide application in the future.
