Transactions on Computational Science II

Transactions on Computational Science II is devoted to the subject of denotational mathematics for computational intelligence. Denotational mathematics, as a counterpart of conventional analytic mathematics, is a category of expressive mathematical structures that deals with high-level mathematical entities beyond numbers and sets, such as abstract objects, complex relations, behavioral information, concepts, knowledge, processes, granules, and systems. This volume includes 12 papers covering the following four important areas: foundations and applications of denotational mathematics; rough and fuzzy set theories; granular computing; and knowledge and information modeling.

Traité des infections et pathologies génitales à papillomavirus = Treated on genital papillomavirus infections and pathologies

The impact of papillomavirus (HPV) infection is considerable. More than one in two women has been exposed to HPV in her lifetime and about 10% will develop a chronic infection. Of these, 20% will develop cervical cancer in the absence (or failure) of screening. Optimization of screening and better management are now possible through the use of innovative techniques such as smear in liquid suspension and HPV testing. Because cervical cancer is the ultimate consequence of chronic HPV infection, we now have the extraordinary chance to prevent it with a prophylactic vaccine intended to protect women from the associated precancerous and cancerous HPV lesions, as well as condylomata acuminata. This resolutely practical and educational collective work takes stock of knowledge on HPV infection and its associated pathologies while deciphering the new issues and practices in the vaccine era.

Traffic Grooming in Optical WDM Mesh Networks

The authors investigate traffic-grooming problems in optical WDM mesh networks from various aspects. They cover static and dynamic traffic grooming, as well as grooming policies for both environments. A fundamental graph model for traffic-grooming networks is proposed. A variety of grooming-node architectures are examined and their performances compared. Design of traffic-grooming networks using different node architectures is explored, and traffic grooming in next-generation SONET/SDH networks is presented.

Traffic and Granular Flow 03

These proceedings are the fifth in the series Traffic and Granular Flow, and we hope they will be as useful a reference as their predecessors. Both the realistic modelling of granular media and traffic flow present important challenges at the borderline between physics and engineering, and enormous progress has been made since 1995, when this series started. Still the research on these topics is thriving, so that this book again contains many new results. Some highlights addressed at this conference were the influence of long range electric and magnetic forces and ambient fluids on granular media, new precise traffic measurements, and experiments on the complex decision making of drivers.

Traditional use of medicinal plants for the treatment of Diabetes mellitus

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by persistent hyperglycemia. It may be due to impaired insulin secretion, resistance to peripheral actions of insulin, or both. According to the International Diabetes Federation (IDF), approximately 415 million adults between the ages of 20 to 79 years had diabetes mellitus in 2015. DM is proving to be a global public health burden as this number is expected to rise to another 200 million by 2040. Chronic hyperglycemia in synergy with the other metabolic aberrations in patients with diabetes mellitus can cause damage to various organ systems, leading to the development of disabling and life-threatening health complications, most prominent of which are microvascular (retinopathy, nephropathy, and neuropathy) and macrovascular complications leading to a 2-fold to a 4-fold increased risk of cardiovascular diseases.

Trade, Integration and Economic Development : The EU and Latin America

This volume is a collection of papers which were presented at the 7th conference meeting of the Arnoldshain Research Network in Vienna 2006. Numerous researchers from the European Union and Latin American countries have contributed papers on trade, integration, open economy macroeconomics and the institutional framework, which all play an important role for economic development in Latin America. In the spirit of comparative economics, Latin American policies can deeply benefit from experience gained in the European Union. Comparisons as well as bilateral relations have entered in a manifold way in the contributions of this volume. Topics such as achievements in trade liberalization between Latin American countries and their main trading partners the EU and the US, important trade areas for Latin America such as agricultural products, the role of exports for solvency, the policies of Latin American countries to attract FDI, the problem of corruption and the issue of income convergence are discussed.

Towards Affordance-Based Robot Control ; International Seminar, Dagstuhl Castle, Germany, June 5-9, 2006. Revised Papers

Today’s mobile robot perception is insufficient for acting goal-directedly in unconstrained, dynamic everyday environments like a home, a factory, or a city. Subject to restrictions in bandwidth, computer power, and computation time, a robot has to react to a wealth of dynamically changing stimuli in such environments, requiring rapid, selective attention to decisive, action-relevant information of high current utility. Robust and general engineering methods for effectively and efficiently coupling perception, action and reasoning are unavailable. Interesting performance, if any, is currently only achieved by sophisticated robot programming exploiting domain features and specialties, which leaves ordinary users no chance of changing how the robot acts.
