Smart Business Networks

A number of scientists - from management and strategy, information systems, engineering and telecommunications - gathered at the Vanenburg castle in the Netherlands to discuss a novel concept: Smart Business Networks. They see the future as a developing web of people, organisations and IT/networking infrastructures, bound together in dynamic, unpredictable ways, creating smart outcomes from quickly (re-)configuring links between actors. They posed the question: What should be done to make the outcomes of such a network 'smart' that is just a little better than that of your competitor? More agile, with less pain, with more return to all the members of the network, now and over time? The answer was that we observe the emergence of "business operating systems" that run business processes on different organisational platforms while sharing elements of their infrastructures. Business processes become portable: The end-to-end management of different processes running across different organisations in many different forms becomes possible, while leaving to each actor the ultimate power of choosing its partners in different constellations. This book presents the outcomes of an energizing discussion of this emerging new direction in management science.

Sleep Neurology : A Comprehensive Guide to Basic and Clinical Aspects

This practical text provides knowledge of the basic neuroscience of sleep and sleep disorders as they interrelate with various neurologic conditions.Chapters in the first section cover neural networks involved in normal sleep processes, including dreams and memory. Also discussed are how these neural networks interact in various sleep stages and sleep disorders, such as sleep related movement disorders. The book's second section explores the pathophysiology of sleep disorders in the spectrum of neurologic conditions in both adults and children. This includes sleep changes in patients with dementia, seizures, headaches, and stroke, and other common neurologic disorders.

Sistemi ACM e imaging diagnostico : Le immagini mediche come matrici attive di connessioni = ACM systems and diagnostic imaging : Medical images as active matrices of connections

The first hypothesis underlying ACM (Active Connections Matrix) systems is that each N-dimensional image can be transformed into a network of interconnected pixels that develops over time through local, deterministic, and iterative operations. The transformed image can display, in a larger dimensional space, morphological and dynamic regularities that, in the original dimensions, would be invisible or could be classified as noise. This hypothesis allows us to explain the second hypothesis underlying ACM systems: each image contains within it the inherent mathematics that produced it. In practice, it is as if each image concealed within it two other invisible images. ACM systems extract them and make them visible. The work also describes possible applications in diagnostic imaging and is therefore aimed at physicists, computer scientists, radiologists, and laboratory technicians who work in image processing.

Shortest Connectivity : An Introduction with Applications in Phylogeny

This volume is an introduction to the theory of "Shortest Connectivity", as the core of the so-called "Geometric Network Design Problems", where the general problem can be stated as follows: given a configuration of vertices and/or edges, find a network which contains these objects, satisfies some predetermined requirements, and which minimizes a given objective function that depends on several distance measures. A new application of shortest connectivity is also discussed, namely to create trees which reflect the evolutionary history of "living entities".

Shipping and Globalization in the Post-War Era : Contexts, Companies, Connections

This volume highlights the contribution of the shipping industry to the transformations in business and society of the postwar era. Shipping was both an example and an engine of globalization and structural change. In turn, the industry experienced and pioneered, mirrored and enabled key developments that led to the present-day globalized economy. Contributions address issues such as the macro-level shift of shipping’s centre of gravity from Europe to Asia, the political and legal frameworks within which it developed, the strategies and performance of both successful and unsuccessful firms, and the links between the shipping industry and the wider economy and society. Without shipping and its ability to forge connections and networks of a global reach, the modern world would look very different.
