Robot Motion and Control 2007

"Robot Motion Control 2007" presents very recent results in robot motion and control. Forty-one short papers have been chosen from those presented at the sixth International Workshop on Robot Motion and Control held in Poland in June 2007. The authors of these papers have been carefully selected and represent leading institutions in this field. The following recent developments are discussed: Design of trajectory planning schemes for nonholonomic systems with optimization of energy, torque limitations and other factors; vision-based Control; different applications of robotic systems in industry and everyday life, like medicine, education, entertainment and others.

RoboCup 2004 : Robot Soccer World Cup VIII ; Conference proceedings

The papers presented here document the many innovations in robotics that result from RoboCup. A problem in any branch of science or engineering is how to devise tests that can provide objective comparisons between alt- native methods. In recent years, competitive engineering challenges have been established to motivate researchers to tackle di?cult problems while providing a framework for the comparison of results. RoboCup was one of the first such competitions and has been a model for the organization of challenges foll- ing sound scientifc principles. In addition to the competition, the associated symposium provides a forum for researchers to present refereed papers. But, for RoboCup, the symposium has the greater goal of encouraging the exchange of ideas between teams so that the competition, as a whole, progresses from year to year and strengthens its contribution to robotics.

Road Pricing, the Economy and the Environment

Economic growth and globalisation create traffic growth, leading to congestion, which again increases travel times and costs. Traffic growth also increases CO2 emissions, air pollution, accidents, and noise. So, clearly there is a need to manage traffic, taking into account that there is a need for transportation; hence it cannot be restricted without costs. Road pricing, where motorists pay for driving on specific roads, is an instrument that may efficiently reduce the negative impacts. But despite technological development and the efforts of the EU, it is still not widely used. Apparently, more research-based knowledge about the positive and negative consequences of road pricing is required. This volume is a collection of research papers on the use of road pricing. The focus is on passenger transport, and the papers cover a wide range of approaches, including theoretical modelling and empirical studies of road pricing experience from different cities.

Risk-Averse Capacity Control in Revenue Management

“If necessity is the mother of invention, then deregulation is the father, and r- enue management (also known as yield management) is the couple’s golden child – at least as far as operations research is concerned.” (Horner, 2000, p. 47) Deregulation had a signi?cant impact on the U.S. airline industry in the late 1970s. Charter and low-cost airlines such as People Express and Southwest wereabletoo?erseatsatafractionofthepricechargedbyestablishedcarriers like Pan Am and American Airlines. Due to their di?erent cost structure, it seemed to be impossible for the big carriers to o?er tickets at the same low price. Yet they had to ?nd a way to compete. Robert L. Crandall from American Airlines is widely credited with the - lution to the problem:yield management – today calledrevenue management, since it maximizes revenue earned on a ?ight rather than yield (revenue per passenger mile).

Ribozymes: Principles, Methods, Applications ; 2 Volume Set

Ribozymes is organized into six major parts. It starts by describing general principles and strategies of nucleic acid catalysis. It then introduces naturally occurring ribozymes and includes the search for new catalytic motifs or novel genomic locations of known motifs. Next, it covers the development and design of engineered ribozymes, before moving on to DNAzymes as a close relative of ribozymes. The next part examines the use of ribozymes for medicinal and environmental diagnostics, as well as for therapeutic tools. It finishes with a look at the tools and methods in ribozyme research, including the techniques and assays for structural and functional characterization of nucleic acid catalysts.

Rhythm and Transforms

People quite naturally identify the rhythmic structure of music as they tap their feet and sway in time with the beat. Underlying such mundane motions is an act of cognition that is not easily reproduced in a computer program or automated by machine. Rhythm and Transforms asks (and answers) the question: How can we build a device that can "tap its foot" along with the music? The result is a tool for detecting and measuring the temporal aspects of a musical performance: the periodicities, the regularities (and irregularities), the beat, the rhythm. The impact of such a "rhythm meter" on music theory and on the design of sound processing electronics such as musical synthesizers, drum machines, and special effects devices is described. The "rhythm meter" provides a concrete basis for a discussion of the relationship between the cognitive processing of temporal information and the mathematical techniques used to describe and understand regularities in data.

Rho Family GTPases

Humans contain more than 20 Rho type GTPases. This volume not only presents a detailed phylogenetic analysis of Rho proteins, but also discusses the possible origins of the human members. Such an analysis of human Rho GTPases has not previously been attempted. Responsive Open Learning Environments : Outcomes of Research from the ROLE Project

This book presents the outcomes of four years of educational research in the EU-supported project called ROLE (Responsive Online Learning Environments). ROLE technology is centered around the concept of self-regulated learning that creates responsible learners, who are capable of critical thinking and able to plan their own learning processes.
