Handbook on Hyperbaric Medicine

It is now ten years since the first Handbook on Hyperbaric Medicine was published. During this time there have been many major advances: our understanding of the actions of hyperbaric oxygenation, and the pathophysiological processes it engages, have been elucidated by several studies; clinical practice is becoming more scientific with the application of evidence-based medicine (EBM) principles and the appearance of a number of randomised clinical trials; various consensus-derived organisational and operational recommendations and guidelines have become normative and are now widely accepted.

Handbook of Pathogens and Diseases in Cephalopods

The aim of this book is to facilitate the identification and description of the different organs as well as pathogens and diseases affecting the most representative species of cephalopods focussed on Sepia officinalis, Loligo vulgaris and Octopus vulgaris. These species are valuable ‘morphotype’ models and belong to the taxonomic groups Sepioidea, Myopsida and Octopoda, which include most of the species with a high market value and aquaculture potential. The study is based on photographs at macroscopic and histological level in order to illustrate the role of the most important pathogens and related diseases from the view of a pathological diagnosis. The reader is able to familiarize with functional anatomy, necropsy and general histology of adults and paralarvae, as well as with the identification of different pathogens and pathologies. This work is thus an invaluable guide for the diagnosis of cephalopod diseases. Besides including pathogens for non-European cephalopod species, it also provides a useful contribution encouraging marine pathologists, parasitologists, veterinarians and those involved in fishery sanitary assessments, aquarium maintenance and aquaculture practices aiming to increase their knowledge about the pathology of cephalopods.

Handbook of neurochemistry and molecular neurobiology : Neurotransmitter Systems

The brain is the organ that collects information from the environment, processes and stores the information, and generates behavior as and when needed. In essence, the brain makes us who we are. For this reason, understanding the biology of brain function is a great challenge and a major goal of modern science. The brain is one of the last great frontiers in science, and the unraveling of its mysteries is comparable in complexity to efforts in space exploration. A fundamental goal of neuroscience is to understand how neurons generate behavior and the pathophysiology of different mental and neurological diseases. This requires, among other things, information about where these neurons are located, how they are connected, and how they communicate with each other in various physiological and pathophysiological conditions. Our aim is to describe recent discoveries about the basic operations of the brain and to provide an introduction to the adaptations for specific types of information processing.

Handbook of neurochemistry and molecular neurobiology : Neuroimmunology

Neuroimmunology is one of the most rapidly developing branches of Neurobiology, and this volume contains chapters that focus on a huge range of topics including the relationship between neuroimmunology and the pathogenesis of different nervous diseases.

Handbook of neurochemistry and molecular neurobiology : Neural Protein Metabolism and Function

This volume discusses aspects of neural protein metabolism. Although this subject is clearly very important and has numerous functional aspects, it did not always get the attention it clearly deserves. Perhaps there are many explanations for researchers hesitating in the past to focus on protein metabolism.

Handbook of neurochemistry and molecular neurobiology : Development and Aging Changes in the Nervous System

In the animal nervous system, a very high metabolic turnover, fragile but steep ionic gradients, and morphological and structural constraints - dictated by the necessity for prompt neuronal transmission of electrical impulses and necessary plasticity - result in a highly fragile organ system. Here, we address a small sampling of major constituents of neural function at the cellular and molecular level that play important roles in development and aging, two endogenous processes that embody features of allostasis or the dynamic shifts in set points for specific homeostatic mechanisms associated with development and aging. These chapters stress the dynamic features of neuronal responses to internal (developmental) cues or the more harmful external events (injury and disease) in a modern perspective.

Handbook of neurochemistry and molecular neurobiology : Degenerative Diseases of the Nervous System

The Second Edition of the Handbook of Neurochemistry, which was published about 24 years ago, consisted of 10 volumes. In addition to metabolic processes, the 17 new volumes explore the functions of peptides, transport, immunology and other processes not well understood 24 years ago.

Handbook of neurochemistry and molecular neurobiology : Brain Energetics. Integration of Molecular and Cellular Processes

Focuses on aspects of energy metabolism that are unique to the brain. The goal of each chapter is to provide a fundamental overview of each area, to define the state-of-the-art in that area as it relates to brain, and, where appropriate, describe models that portray poorly understood and apparently contradictory data sets with the goal of helping focus attention to experimental resolution of controversial issues.
