Computational intelligence based on lattice theory
The emergence of lattice theory within the field of computational intelligence (CI) is partially due to its proven effectiveness in neural computation. Moreover, lattice theory has the potential to unify a number of diverse concepts and aid in the cross-fertilization of both tools and ideas within the numerous subfields of CI. The compilation of this eighteen-chapter book is an initiative towards proliferating established knowledge in the hope to further expand it. This edited book is a balanced synthesis of four parts emphasizing, in turn, neural computation, mathematical morphology, machine learning, and (fuzzy) inference/logic. The articles here demonstrate how lattice theory may suggest viable alternatives in practical clustering, classification, pattern analysis, and regression applications.

We present in this volume the collection of finally accepted papers of the eighth edition of the “IWANN” conference (“International Work-Conference on Artificial Neural Networks”). This biennial meeting focuses on the foundations, theory, models and applications of systems inspired by nature (neural networks, fuzzy logic and evolutionary systems). For scientists, engineers and professionals working in the area, this is a very good way to get solid and competitive applications. We are facing a real revolution with the emergence of embedded intelligence in many artificial systems (systems covering diverse fields: industry, domotics, leisure, healthcare, … ). So we are convinced that an enormous amount of work must be, and should be, still done. Many pieces of the puzzle must be built and placed into their proper positions, offering us new and solid theories and models (necessary tools) for the application and praxis of these current paradigms. The above-mentioned concepts were the main reason for the subtitle of the IWANN 2005 edition: “Computational Intelligence and Bioinspired Systems.” papers was addressing the following topics: 1. Mathematical and theoretical methods in computational intelligence.

The book Computational Intelligence: Principles, Techniques and Applications presents both theories and applications of Computational Intelligence in a clear, precise and highly comprehensive style. The textbook addresses the fundamental aspects of Fuzzy Sets and Logic, Neural Networks, Evolutionary Computing and Belief Networks. The application areas include Fuzzy Databases, Fuzzy Control, Image Understanding, Expert Systems, Object Recognition, Criminal Investigation, Telecommunication Networks and Intelligent Robots. The book contains many numerical examples and homework problems with sufficient hints so that the students can solve them on their own. This book expands a recent mathematical treatment of the Baars model of individual consciousness to an institutional venue in which multiple ‘Global Workspaces’ cooperate, communicate, and compete. The result is an expansion of Dretske’s necessary conditions communications theory approach to high level cognition.
Collaborating against child abuse : Exploring the Nordic Barnahus model
This edited collection explores the background and implementation of the Nordic Barnahus (or 'Children's House') model – recognised as one of the most important reforms related to children who are the victims of crime in the Nordic region. This book discusses both its potential to affect change and the challenges facing it. The model was introduced as a response to a growing recognition of the need for more integrated and child-centred services for children exposed to violence and sexual abuse. In the Barnahus structure, different professions work together to ensure that victimized children receive help and treatment and that their legal rights are met. This original study is organised into four broad themes: child-friendliness, support and treatment; the forensic child investigative interview; children’s rights perspectives; and interagency collaboration and professional autonomy.

Cognitive engineering : A distributed approach to machine intelligence
Cognitive Engineering: A Distributed Approach to Machine Intelligence explores the design issues of intelligent engineering systems. Beginning with the foundations of psychological modeling of the human mind, the main emphasis is given to parallel and distributed realization of intelligent models for application in reasoning, learning, planning and multi-agent co-ordination problems. The last two chapters provide case studies on human-mood detection and control, and behavioral co-operation of mobile robots. This is the first comprehensive text of its kind, bridging the gap between Cognitive Science and Cognitive Systems Engineering. Each chapter includes plenty of numerical examples and exercises with sufficient hints, so that the reader can solve the exercises on their own. Computer simulations are also included in most chapters to give a clear idea about the application of the algorithms undertaken in the book. In addition, mathematical analysis on convergence and stability of the neuro-fuzzy models will enable the reader to pursue their research career in cognitive engineering.
Cognitive Economics
As a manifestation of a 'cognitive turn' observable in all social sciences, Cognitive Economics is concerned with the beliefs and mental operations held by actors placed within a dynamical and strategic environment. It appears as a synthesis of an educative research program, dealing with crossed expectations of actors, and an evolutionist research program on collective learning processes. The book mainly aims at extending the framework of game theory in order to better fit the results of rapidly increasing laboratory experiments concerned with individual choices and collective interactions. It also seeks to better explain some original economic phenomena involving boundedly rational agents in an institutional setting such as financial bubbles, job search or technological innovation.
