Ages, generations and the social contract : The demographic challenges facing the welfare state
Our societies are ageing. The Family is changing. Labour force behaviour is evolving. How is the organisation of family and collective solidarity adapting in this context of longer life spans, low fertility, and work that is simultaneously scarce and abundant? The welfare states are currently facing three main challenges: ensure satisfactory living conditions for the elderly without increasing the cost burden on the active population, reduce social inequality, and maintain equity between successive generations. In this book, researchers from different countries compare their experiences and offer contrasting views on the future of social protection. They consider the theoretical aspects of the intergenerational debate, relations between generations within the family, the living standards of elderly people, and the question of social time.

After Taste : Expanded Practice in Interior Design

In 2007, the Department of Architecture, Interior Design and Lighting at Parsons The New School for Design inaugurated an annual international symposium series dedicated to the critical study of the interior.
Advertising in contemporary consumer culture
This is the first scholarly book dedicated to reading the work of contemporary filmmakers and their impact on modern marketing and advertising. Drawing from consumer culture theory, film and media studies, the author presents an expansive analysis of a range of renowned filmmakers who have successfully applied their aesthetic and narrative vision to commercial advertising. It challenges some traditional advertising tropes and sheds light on the changing nature of advertising in the contemporary media context. Utilising Deleuze and Guattari’s notion of assemblage, This book addresses themes of spatiality and time, narrative and aesthetics and consumer reception within a new frame of reference that re-contextualises classical concepts of genre, platform and aesthetic categories. These diverse elements are embedded into a larger discussion of the resonance of contemporary advertising for consumer culture and the implications of the hybridity characteristic of convergent media platforms for understanding the potential of advertising in the twenty-first century.

Advances in the Geological Storage of Carbon Dioxide : International Approaches to Reduce Anthropogenic Greenhouse Gas Emissions
As is now generally accepted mankind’s burning of fossil fuels has resulted in the mass transfer of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere, a modification of the delicately-balanced global carbon cycle, and a measurable change in world-wide temperatures and climate. Although not the most powerful greenhouse gas, carbon dioxide (CO) drives climate 2 change due to the enormous volumes of this gas pumped into the atmosphere every day. Produced in almost equal parts by the transportation, industrial and energy-generating sectors, atmospheric CO concentrations have 2 increased by about 50% over the last 300 years, and according to some sources are predicted to increase by up to 200% over pre-industrial levels during the next 100 years. If we are to reverse this trend, in order to prevent significant environmental change in the future, action must be taken immediately.

The present volume 47 of the Advances in Solid State Physics contains the written version of a large number of the invited talks of the 2007 Spring Meeting of the Arbeitskreis Festkörperphysik which was held in Regensburg, Germany, from March 26 to 30, 2007 in conjunction with the 71st Annual Meeting of the Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft.It gives an overview of the present status of solid state physics where low-dimensional systems such as quantum dots and quantum wires are dominating. The 2006 edition of the Eurocrypt conference was held in St. Petersburg,Russia from May 28 to June 1, 2006. It was the 25th Eurocrypt conference. Eurocrypt is sponsored by the International Association for Cryptologic Research (IACR). Eurocrypt 2006 was chaired by Anatoly Lebedev, and I had the privilege to chair the Program Committee. Eurocrypt collected 198 submissions on November 21, 2005. The Program Committee carried out a thorough review process. In total, 863 review reports were written by renowned experts, Program Committee members as well as external referees. Online discussions led to 1,114 additional discussion messages and about 1,000 emails. The review process was run using e-mail and the iChair software by Thomas Baign` eres and Matthieu Finiasz. Every submitted paper received at least three review reports. The Program Committee had a meeting in Lausanne on February 4, 2006.

The Artificial Life term appeared more than 20 years ago . Since then the area has developed dramatically, many researchersjoining enthusiastically and research groups sprouting everywhere.a conceptual track, where papers were judged on criteria like importance and/or novelty of the concepts proposed rather than the experimental / theoretical results, has been introduced this year. A conference on a theme as broad as Artificial Life is bound to be very di-verse, but a few tendencies emerged. First, fields like ‘Robotics and Autonomous Agents’ or ‘Evolutionary Computation’are still extremely active and keep onbringing a wealth of results to the A-Life community. Even there, however, new tendencies appear, like collective robotics, and more specifically self-assembling robotics, which represent now a large subsection. Second, new areas appear.‘Morphogenesis and Development’ which used to be the subject of only a fewpapers, is now one of the largest subsections, and seems to be on the brinkof becoming a field of its own. Finally, most classical themes of A-Life re-search like ‘Artificial Chemistry’, ‘Ant-Inspired Systems’, ‘Cellular Automata’,‘Self-Replication’, ‘Social Simulations’ or ‘Bio-realist Simulations’ are still goingstrong and are well represented within this volume.
Advanced Linear Algebra
For the third edition, the author has added a new chapter on associative algebras that includes the well known characterizations of the finite-dimensional division algebras over the real field (a theorem of Frobenius) and over a finite field (Wedderburn's theorem); polished and refined some arguments (such as the discussion of reflexivity, the rational canonical form, best approximations and the definitions of tensor products); upgraded some proofs that were originally done only for finite-dimensional/rank cases; added new theorems, including the spectral mapping theorem; considerably expanded the reference section with over a hundred references to books on linear algebra.

Acne vulgaris in Syria : Epidemiology and treatment
Acne vulgaris, a chronic inflammatory disorder of the pilosebaceous unit, exerts significant physical and psychosocial burdens among adolescents. Despite anecdotal evidence of high prevalence in Syria, systematic epidemiological and treatment data are scarce, highlighting the need for local investigation. This study quantifies acne prevalence and severity among Syrian youths, evaluates treatment patterns and preventive practices, identifies patient-perceived triggers and advere effects, assesses psychosocial impacts, and synthesizes dermatologist recommendations to optimize acne management strategies within the Syrian healthcare context.
Accountability for International Humanitarian Law Violations : The Case of Rwanda and East Timor
The main objective of this book is to make available to an informed audience a le gal and policy oriented study on accountability for serious human rights and inter national humanitarian law violations. It is an attempt to share the lessons learnt in accountability for atrocity crimes as conducted by the International Criminal Tri bunal for Rwanda (ICTR), and the United Nations Transitional Administration in East Timor (UNTAET). The former established subsequent to egregious atrocities that took place in 1994, and the latter following the massive outburst of violence in 1999. The book is based on two cases: Rwanda and East Timor. It is expected that it will serve as reference literature to both the legal community and policy makers on accountability for heinous international crimes.
