Mathematics Education in East Africa : Towards Harmonization and Enhancement of Education Quality
In the increasingly global and technological world mathematics is seen as a significant gatekeeper of opportunities for social and economic advancement and mobility. Hence, countries and development agencies in the broader sub-Saharan Africa region are looking towards increasing access to relevant and high-quality secondary education as a lever towards economic development. Policy makers and other key decision makers in education look towards improvement in mathematics teaching and learning as a key focus in education reform. In the East Africa region also a number of initiatives have been taken at the national level in the respective countries to improve the quality of mathematics education. This book provides an in-depth comparative analysis of the developments and issues in mathematics education in Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda and Uganda, and advances our understanding of the state of secondary mathematics education in East Africa.

This book is about the results of a number of projects funded by the BMBF in the initiative "Mathematics for Innovations in Industry and Services". It shows that a broad spectrum of analytical and numerical mathematical methods and programming techniques are used to solve a lot of different specific industrial or services problems. The main focus is on the fact that the mathematics used is not usually standard mathematics or black box mathematics but is specifically developed for specific industrial or services problems. Mathematics is more than a tool box or an ancilarry science for other scientific disciplines or users. Through this book the reader will gain insight into the details of mathematical modeling and numerical simulation for a lot of industrial applications.
Mathematical Models of Granular Matter
Granular matter displays a variety of peculiarities that distinguish it from other appearances studied in condensed matter physics and renders its overall mathematical modelling somewhat arduous. Isomorphisms Between H¹ Spaces
Presents a thorough and self-contained presentation of H¹ and its known isomorphic invariants, such as the uniform approximation property, the dimension conjecture, and dichotomies for the complemented subspaces. The necessary background is developed from scratch. This includes a detailed discussion of the Haar system, together with the operators that can be built from it (averaging projections, rearrangement operators, paraproducts, Calderon-Zygmund singular integrals). Complete proofs are given for the classical martingale inequalities of C. Fefferman, Burkholder, and Khinchine-Kahane, and for large deviation inequalities. Complex interpolation, analytic families of operators, and the Calderon product of Banach lattices are treated in the context of H^p spaces. Througout the book, special attention is given to the combinatorial methods developed in the field, particularly J. Bourgain's proof of the dimension conjecture, L. Carleson's biorthogonal system in H¹, T. Figiel's integral representation, W.B. Johnson's factorization of operators, B. Maurey's isomorphism, and P. Jones' proof of the uniform approximation property. An entire chapter is devoted to the study of combinatorics of colored dyadic intervals."
Isomonodromic Deformations and Frobenius Manifolds : An Introduction
The notion of a Frobenius structure on a complex analytic manifold appeared at the end of the seventies in the theory of singularities of holomorphic functions. Motivated by physical considerations, further development of the theory has opened new perspectives on, and revealed new links between, many apparently unrelated areas of mathematics and physics. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a chronic gastrointestinal disorder with a range of symptoms that significantly affect quality of life for patients. Is currently one of the most common disorders of the digestive system in the Western society? Almost 2 out of 10 people suffer from IBS, and it is associated with abdominal pain, bloating and altered stool consistency and imposes a heavy burden for the affected patients. Written by leading philosophers, psychologists, literary scholars and semioticians, the book addresses two intertwined issues. The first is related to the phenomenology of aesthetic experience: The understanding of how human beings respond to artworks, how we process linguistic or visual information, and what properties in artworks trigger aesthetic experiences. Demand for timber and fibre continues to grow and is being met by increased reliance on plantation forestry. Many of the plantations that are being grown around the globe are non-native species that have characteristics of rapid growth and good commercial qualities. In some cases, the high rates of production are a result of the absence of native herbivore and diseases. This limited pest status is threatened as pest species move around the globe. At the same time there is concern about threats of these non-native plantation species on native communities and the impact of changing climates on forest productivity. This volume explores many of these issues for the first time.
