Domain Decomposition Methods for the Numerical Solution of Partial Differential Equations

Domain decomposition methods are divide and conquer methods for the parallel and computational solution of partial differential equations of elliptic or parabolic type. They include iterative algorithms for solving the discretized equations, techniques for non-matching grid discretizations and techniques for heterogeneous approximations. This book serves as an introduction to this subject, with emphasis on matrix formulations. The topics studied include Schwarz, substructuring, Lagrange multiplier and least squares-control hybrid formulations, multilevel methods, non-self adjoint problems, parabolic equations, saddle point problems (Stokes, porous media and optimal control), non-matching grid discretizations, heterogeneous models, fictitious domain methods, variational inequalities, maximum norm theory, eigenvalue problems, optimization problems and the Helmholtz scattering problem. Selected convergence theory is included.

Doing Cross-Cultural Research : Ethical and Methodological Perspectives

Conducting cross-cultural research is rife with methodological, ethical and moral challenges. Researchers are challenged with many issues in carrying out their research with people in cross-cultural arenas. In this book, I attempt to bring together salient issues for the conduct of culturally appropriate research. The task of undertaking cross-cultural research can present researchers with unique opportunities, and yet dilemmas. The book will provide some thought-provoking points so that our research may proceed relatively well and yet ethical in our approach. The subject of the book is on the ethical, methodological, political understanding and practical procedures in undertaking cross-cultural research.

DNA Binders and Related Subjects

advances in technology and the application of new methods to outstanding problems have played a major part in the development of ideas about drug-nucleic acid recognition. The field has undergone an explosive diversification as wider and wider problems became accessible to study using the new ideas and techniques. This volume reflects that diversification by offering accounts of selected areas that illustrate recent advances in the study of ligand–nucleic acid binding over disparate areas of the subject. There are chapters dealing specifically with the invention and application of new methodology, and a particularly thoughtful essay on the interpretation of X-ray diffraction data which may not be as straightforward as is often imagined. Other chapters illustrate the diversity and complexity of drug-DNA binding from several perspectives, referring to particular groups of related compounds or the potential attractions of the less-preferred DNA major groove as a target for nucleotide sequence recognition by ligands.

Disease in Wild Animals : Investigation and Management

Wildlife diseases have become increasingly important recently due to their effect upon human health, veterinary medicine, wildlife, and conservation biology. Gary Wobeser's successful book from 1994 has been completely updated and enlarged in a new second edition. An in-depth overview of the available techniques for the investigation and management of disease in free-ranging animals is provided. The subjects are illustrated with examples drawn from around the world, with emphasis on the special requirements involved in working with wild animals. Techniques are assessed critically with regard to their efficacy and effectiveness.

Discrete-time Markov jump linear systems

Safety critical and high-integrity systems, such as industrial plants and economic systems, can be subject to abrupt changes - for instance, due to component or interconnection failure, sudden environment changes, etc. Combining probability and operator theory, Discrete-Time Markov Jump Linear Systems provides a unified and rigorous treatment of recent results for the control theory of discrete jump linear systems, which are used in these areas of application. The book is designed for experts in linear systems with Markov jump parameters, but is also of interest for specialists in stochastic control since it presents stochastic control problems for which an explicit solution is possible - making the book suitable for course use.

Disability in Islamic Law

The book analyzes attitudes to people with various disabilities based on Muslim jurists’ works (fiqh) in the Middle Ages and the modern era. In the Islamic legal literature people with disabilities are mentioned sporadically, and often within broad topics such as religious duties, jihad, marriage, etc., but seldom as a subject by its own right. Very little has been written so far on people with disabilities in a general Islamic context, much less in reference to Islamic law. This is the innovation of the book.

Digital Timing Measurements : From Scopes and Probes to Timing and Jitter

As many circuits and applications now enter the Gigahertz frequency range, accurate digital timing measurements have become crucial in the design, verification, characterization, and application of electronic circuits. To be successful in this endeavour, an engineer needs a knowledge base covering instrumentation, measurement techniques, signal integrity, jitter and timing concepts, and statistics. Very often even the most experienced digital test engineers, while mastering some of those subjects, lack systematic knowledge or experience in the high speed signal area.

Digital Rights Management : Technologies, Issues, Challenges and Systems

The First International Conference on Digital Rights Management: Technology, Issues, Challenges and Systems (DRMTICS – pronounced ‘dramatics’), took place in Sydney, Australia on 31st October - 2nd November, 2005.DRMTICS isan internationalconferenceseriesthat coversthe areaof digital rights management, including research advancements of an applied and theor- ical nature. The goal is to have a broad coverage of the ?eld and related issues and subjects as the area evolves. Since the Internet and the computing infr- tructure has turned into a marketplace for content where information goods of various kinds are exchanged, this area is expected to grow and be part of the ongoing evolution of the information society.

Differential Subject Marking

Relatively much is known about cross-linguistic variation in the marking of subjects, yet little attempt has been made to formalize the facts. This volume aims to unify formal approaches to language and presents both specific case studies of DSM and theoretical approaches.

Differential Geometry and Analysis on CR Manifolds

The study of CR manifolds lies at the intersection of three main mathematical disciplines: partial differential equations, complex analysis in several complex variables, and differential geometry. While the PDE and complex analytic aspects have been intensely studied in the last fifty years, much effort has recently been made to understand the differential geometric side of the subject. This monograph provides a unified presentation of several differential geometric aspects in the theory of CR manifolds and tangential Cauchy–Riemann equations. It presents the major differential geometric acheivements in the theory of CR manifolds, such as the Tanaka–Webster connection, Fefferman's metric, pseudo-Einstein structures and the Lee conjecture, CR immersions, subelliptic harmonic maps as a local manifestation of pseudoharmonic maps from a CR manifold, Yang–Mills fields on CR manifolds, to name a few. It also aims at explaining how certain results from analysis are employed in CR geometry.Motivated by clear exposition, many examples, explicitly worked-out geometric results, and stimulating unproved statements and comments referring to the most recent aspects of the theory.
