Pro VB 2005 and the .NET 2.0 Platform

With the release of .NET 2.0, the Visual Basic 2005 language has been updated with numerous new programming constructs (XML code documentation, operator overloading, generics, and partial types just to name a few!). Now more than ever, choosing a .NET language boils down to personal preference (rather than a languages feature set). However, to effectively make use of these language features, developers must have a rock-solid grounding in object-oriented technology, assemblies, and the core .NET technologies. The purpose of Pro VB 2005 and the .NET 2.0 Platform, Second Edition is to provide you with such a foundation by diving deep into the language of Visual Basic 2005 and the platform of .NET. Thus, rather than simply showing how a code wizard can generate all the code on your behalf, this text will first show you how to author the code yourself so you can alter the generated code to your liking.

Privacy-Respecting Intrusion Detection

With our society's growing dependency on information technology systems (IT), IT security is crucial. To properly respond to misuse or abusive activity in IT systems, one needs to establish the capability to detect and understand improper activity. Intrusion Detection Systems observe activity occurring in the IT system, record these observations in audit data, and analyze collected audit data to detect misuse. Collecting and processing audit data for misuse detection conflicts with expectations and rights of system users regarding their privacy. A viable solution is replacing personal data with pseudonyms in audit data.

Principal Manifolds for Data Visualization and Dimension Reduction

In 1901, Karl Pearson invented Principal Component Analysis (PCA). Since then, PCA serves as a prototype for many other tools of data analysis, visualization and dimension reduction: Independent Component Analysis (ICA), Multidimensional Scaling (MDS), Nonlinear PCA (NLPCA), Self Organizing Maps (SOM), etc. The book starts with the quote of the classical Pearson definition of PCA and includes reviews of various methods: NLPCA, ICA, MDS, embedding and clustering algorithms, principal manifolds and SOM. New approaches to NLPCA, principal manifolds, branching principal components and topology preserving mappings are described as well. Presentation of algorithms is supplemented by case studies, from engineering to astronomy, but mostly of biological data: analysis of microarray and metabolite data.

Preferences and Similarities

The fields of similarity and preference are still broadening due to the exploration of new fields of application. This is caused by the strong impact of vagueness, imprecision, uncertainty and dominance on human and agent information, communication, planning, decision, action, and control as well as by the technical progress of the information technology itself. The topics treated in this book are of interest to computer scientists, statisticians, operations researchers, experts in AI, cognitive psychologists and economists.

Powerful Pedagogy : Self-Study of a Teacher Educator's Practice

Powerful Pedagogy: Self-Study of a Teacher Educator’s Practice is the outcome of the author’s systematically questioning her assumptions about teaching and, in various ways, gives voice to the many individuals who have had an impact on the development of the author’s pedagogy as a mathematics teacher educator. Using self-study as both a lens and a methodology to research her practice over the past three years, the author examines the impact of reflection and reflective practice in pre-service teacher education; voice, silence and that which remains "unsaid"; the ways in which teacher identities emerge and develop, and the role of authority and power in learning about teaching.

PCOS is very common endocrine and metabolic disorders with involvement of both genetic and environmental affect women in reproductive age. Like insulin resistance, having family history of close relative affected by pcos, exposure to certain chemicals and idiopathic causes. Symptoms include amnenorrhea, hirsutism, infertility, obesity, acne and androgenic alopecia. PCOS can affect self esteem, mental health, quality of life, PCOS can treated either medically or by life style modification. PCOS equivalent in male is endocrine disorder similar to pcos occure in males relatives of women with pcos caracterize by premature alopecia before 30 years of age.

Poisson Structures and Their Normal Forms

Poisson manifolds play a fundamental role in Hamiltonian dynamics, where they serve as phase spaces. They also arise naturally in other mathematical problems, and form a bridge from the "commutative world" to the "noncommutative world". The aim of this book is twofold: On the one hand, it gives a quick, self-contained introduction to Poisson geometry and related subjects, including singular foliations, Lie groupoids and Lie algebroids. On the other hand, it presents a comprehensive treatment of the normal form problem in Poisson geometry. Even when it comes to classical results, the book gives new insights. It contains results obtained over the past 10 years which are not available in other books.

Pneumologia interventistica = Interventional Pulmonology

Pulmonology has always distinguished itself from other medical specialties for its important and rich heritage of diagnostic and therapeutic instrumental methods, which have their roots in physiology. Scientific research and technological innovations of the last 30-40 years have provided the pulmonologist with increasingly improved tools, which have contributed to expanding his knowledge, skills and diagnostic and therapeutic potential. The term "interventional pulmonology", adopted by international and national scientific societies (ACCP, ATS, ERS, AIPO, SIMER), includes the traditional methods of diagnostic and therapeutic bronchial endoscopy in adults and children and medical thoracoscopy, but also the transparietal needle aspiration technique, the positioning and management of the thoracic drainage and the most recent TBNA, EBUS, autofluorescence, and others which constitute an indispensable part of the pulmonologist's cultural background. The application of these methods in daily clinical practice, together with other important diagnostic and therapeutic aspects peculiar to pulmonology has contributed to making the figure of the pulmonologist irreplaceable in modern healthcare.

Planning Theory : From the Political Debate to the Methodological Reconstruction

Makes two really compelling arguments: Firstly, that planning theory has lost its focus on the planning process itself and how it can be used effectively to help people figure out what they want, how to get it, and why… Secondly, that planning theory also has lost its focus on the institutional interconnections of planning processes from national, to state or regional, to local levels, and back up again. I think the author is quite right on both counts… It strikes me that what is needed now is an integration of macro and micro perspectives, which is a point that the book makes at various stages.
