Thyroid Cancer

One of the main reasons for publishing this second edition of “T- roid Cancer” is the fact that the first edition has sold out. Furth- more, during the 4 years following the publication of the first edition in 2001, some progress, mainly in the basic sciences (molecular biology), has been made. The most prominent change in the clinical sciences has been the new classification of thyroid cancer, especially with relation to T1–T3 tumors. Now, tumors with a diameter of up to 2 cm are still classified T1. This new UICC classification (6th edition) follows the classification of the American Society of Pathology. These changes require a modification of the old guidelines. According to the Hedinger classification (1988) tumors with a diameter below 1 cm were classified as “papillary microcarcinoma of the thyroid”.

Third-Party Liability of Classification Societies : A Comparative Perspective

Classification societies are charged with the technical supervision of maritime shipping to enhance the safety of life and property at sea by securing high te- nical standards of design, manufacture, construction and maintenance of seagoing vessels. Each and every shipping catastrophe caused by a technical defect reminds the maritime world of the central importance of the vessel’s proper technical supervision. Correspondingly, the liability of classification societies has become a particularly discussed issue over the past years. Their contractual liability is usually limited by general terms and conditions incorporated in the classification rules and cases brought by typical contracting partners of classification societies, such as ship owners and ship yards, are not an issue in the current debate. H- ever, one can note a substantial worldwide increase of actions brought by parties who are not in privity with classification societies. This study focuses on third-party liability of classification societies. It ori- nates in an expert opinion on selected issues relating to third-party liability which the authors compiled for the German classification society Germanischer Lloyd AG. Driven by the highly interesting legal issues and unexplored shores in this area of law

Third Generation Photovoltaics : Advanced Solar Energy Conversion

Photovoltaics, the direct conversion of sunlight to electricity, is now the fastest growing technology for electricity generation. Present "first generation" products use the same silicon wafers as in microelectronics. "Second generation" thin-films, now entering the market, have the potential to greatly improve the economics by eliminating material costs. Martin Green, one of the world’s foremost photovoltaic researchers, argues in this book that "second generation" photovoltaics will eventually reach its own material cost constraints, engendering a "third generation" of high performance thin-films. The book explores, self-consistently, the energy conversion potential of advanced approaches for improving photovoltaic performance and outlines possible implementation paths.

Thin films and heterostructures for oxide electronics

"this book intends to serve as a significant and insightful source of valuable information pertaining to the ongoing scientific debates, current state of understanding and future directions. As such, it should be very useful to university students, post docs, professors and research scientists in industries and national laboratories." With the ever-shrinking dimensions and ever-increasing speeds of conventional semiconductor-based micro and opto-electronic devices, scientific limitations are beginning to be felt by the technology sector in keeping pace with the newer device demands of the modern times. Novel approaches involving new materials such as functional oxides are being explored to tackle this problem. This research is already beginning to pave way for the next generation device concepts and configurations for advanced oxide electronics, encompassing magneto-optics and spintronics. Thin Film Heterostructures for Oxide Electronic presents comprehensive chapters written by active researchers in the field of oxide films and heterostructures. These chapters capture the excitement of this emerging frontier of immense scientific and technological interest. They highlight the materials, physics, device and even key fabrication issues. Many interesting material systems such as magnetic, ferroelectric and superconducting oxides, wide band-gap semiconducting oxides and high- dielectric oxides are discussed.

Thermo-Dynamics of Plates and Shells

This monograph is devoted to the investigation of nonlinear dynamics of plates and shells embedded in a temperature field. Numerical approaches and rigorous mathematical proofs of solution existence in certain classes of differential equations with various dimensions are applied. Both closed shell-type constructions and sectorial shells are studied. The considered problems are approximated by 2D and 3D constructions taking into account various types of nonlinearities (geometrical and/or physical with coupled deformation and temperature fields), and are subjected to an action of stationary and non-stationary thermal loads.

Thermal processes using attosecond laser pulses : When time matters

Contains a study of the thermal processes initiated by attosecond laser pulses. Considering the existence of the experimental evidence for the trains of the attosecond laser pulses, we developed the theoretical framework for attophysics, i.e. physics of phenomena with time duration in the attosecond domain. This time domain is concerned with phenomena whose duration is much shorter than the relaxation time for atomic, molecular and nanoparticles scales.

As the population of cancer survivors continues to grow, there is a great need to term health of this population. Nearly one in five cancers -understand the longdiagnosed today occurs in an individual with a previous diagnosis of cancer, and cancers” are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among these “second the etiology, prevention, and which reported esearchOur rcancer survivors. treatment of second cancers has the potential to improve public health, guide clinical management of survivors, and provide further insight into the mechanisms of carcinogenesis. Secondary cancer risk following radiotherapy and chemotherapy is an increasingly important topic in clinical oncology with impact on treatment decision making and on patient management. And one of the highest incidence was leukemia . Much of the evidence that underlies our understanding of secondary cancer risks and our risk estimates are derived from large epidemiologic studies that we will talk about it and predictive models of earlier decades with large uncertainties.

Theory of Quantum Transport in Metallic and Hybrid Nanostructures

A new science emerges at the intersection of modern physics, computer s- ence, andmaterialscience. Thestruggletofurtherminiaturizeisputtingna- technology to the verge of creating single-electron and/or single-spin devices that operate by moving a single electron (spin) and can serve as transistors, memory cells, and for logic gates. These devices take advantage of quantum physics that dominates nanometer size scales. The devices that utilize met- based hybrid nanostructures may possess signi?cant advantages over those exploiting purely semiconducting materials. First, the chemistry of metals is typically simpler than that of semiconductors. Second, the electric properties of metals are much less sensitive to the structural defects and impurities than those of semiconductors. Next, metallic devices allow better electric and th- mal contacts. Another important plus point is that in metals the electron de Broigle wavelength is smaller by many orders of magnitude as compared to that in semiconductor
