Distributed systems : Concurrency and consistency
Explores the gray area of distributed systems and draws a map of weak consistency criteria, identifying several families and demonstrating how these may be implemented into a programming language. Unlike their sequential counterparts, distributed systems are much more difficult to design, and are therefore prone to problems. On a large scale, usability reminiscent of sequential consistency, which would provide the same global view to all users, is very expensive or impossible to achieve.
Distributed Services with OpenAFS : For Enterprise and Education
This book shows in detail how to build enterprise-level secure, redundant, and highly scalable services from scratch on top of the open source Linux operating system, suitable for small companies as well as big universities. The core architecture presented is based on Kerberos, LDAP, AFS, and Samba. It is shown how to integrate web, message related, data base and other services with this backbone. This architecture provides a Single-Sign-On solution for different client platforms and can also be employed for clustering. Although it is implemented with Debian GNU/Linux, the content can be applied to other UNIX flavors.

This was made possible by the efforts of the Tutorial Chairs, Sr- har Iyer and Pinaki Mitra. The Organizing Committee worked hard to ensure that the participants enjoyed a comfortable stay and the technical meetings proceeded as smoothly as possible.
Distributed Autonomous Robotic System 6
DARS is now a well-established conference that gathers every two years the main researchers in Distributed Robotics systems. Even if the field is growing, it has been maintained a one-track conference in order to enforce effective exchanges between the main researchers in the field. It now a well-established tradition to publish the main contributions as a book from Springer. There are already 5 books entitled "Distributed Autonomous Robotic Systems" 1 to 5.

Discrete-time Sliding Mode Control : A Multirate Output Feedback Approach
Sliding mode control is a simple and yet robust control technique, where the system states are made to confine to a selected subset. With the increasing use of computers and discrete-time samplers in controller implementation in the recent past, discrete-time systems and computer based control have become important topics. This monograph presents an output feedback sliding mode control philosophy which can be applied to almost all controllable and observable systems, while at the same time being simple enough as not to tax the computer too much. It is shown that the solution can be found in the synergy of the multirate output sampling concept and the concept of discrete-time sliding mode control.
Digital Signal Processing with Field Programmable Gate Arrays

Diabetic Kidney Disease
Presents the latest information on the clinical-pathological features of diabetic kidney disease. The data included is based on a cohort study of biopsy-proven diabetic nephropathy patients and nephrosclerosis patients, who were observed over a long term, and on the long-term registry for diabetic nephropathy (diabetic kidney disease) in Japan. It provides a clinical-pathological axis in clinical settings, including differential pathological/clinical diagnoses of CKD in diabetic patients (e.g. the presence of “classic” diabetic nephropathy and/or nephrosclerosis and/or other primary kidney diseases). The abundant biopsy specimens with long-term medical records provide a detailed pathological and clinical description. The book also includes urine-sample data for developing and validating possible candidates for novel biomarkers for diabetic kidney disease. Many countries, including Japan, have ageing populations, in which nephrosclerosis contributes to the progression of kidney lesions in patients with diabetic kidney disease. As such, a comparison of a diabetic nephropathy cohort with nephrosclerosis is indispensable to offer better treatments.

Development and evaluation of setup strategies in printed circuit board assembly
The last decade has seen a rapid extension of electronic control devices for various types of technical products. In modern electronics manufacturing, highly automated assembly systems are used to mount the electronic components onto the printed circuit boards (PCBs). Maintaining high production flexibility in order to meet the desired product variety and, at the same time, achieving high utilization rates of the capital-intensive production equipment can only be achieved by applying highly sophisticated planning and control strategies for the operation of modern placement machines. Ihsan Onur Yilmaz develops a novel group setup strategy which integrates multiple problems of the PCB assembly, especially in a medium-variety production environment. At the core of his principle approach are the identification of similarities between different types of PCBs and the generation of PCB clusters upon which group setup strategies are based. The developed setup strategies are also innovative in the sense that they integrate the optimization of detailed machine operations. This integration has not been achieved in the classical approaches which primarily rely on statistical clustering techniques.
Developing burn ointment using seasam oil, tea tree oil, and,shea butter
The objective of our research project is to develop a burn healing ointment (Meburn) and to compare it with a well-known ointment, MEBO®. The second formula shows very good accelerated stability test results, its histology test was very promising, its ability to accelerate blood vessel formation in heat burns is significant, and, the rats that have been treated with (Meburn and Mebo®) started to get back to their normal weight after 2 weeks in approximate results. Results obtained from our study using rats as an animal model, showed that our proposed ointment (Meburn) has burn healing efficacy similar to Mebo® ointment.
Destruction of hazardous chemicals in the laboratory
Describes practical procedures for the destruction of hazardous chemicals and biological agents in the laboratory in which they are used. The book is a continuation and expansion of “Destruction of Hazardous Chemicals in the Laboratory.” It follows the same general approach as the first and second editions but includes a number of new chapters including one on using advanced oxidation techniques as a general means of degrading chemicals. All the monographs from the second edition are incorporated in this volume and are revised and extended as necessary. A number of new monographs describing procedures for the destruction of hazardous chemicals have also been added.
Designing Information : Human Factors and Common Sense in Information Design
It is a diagram of clarification, containing hundreds of examples of work by those who favor the communication of information over style and academic postulation—and those who don't. Many blurbs such as this are written without a thorough reading of the book. Not so in this case. I read it and love it. I suggest you do the same.
