MRI of the Liver : Imaging Techniques, Contrast Enhancement, Differential Diagnosis
Due to the latest developments in magnetic resonance imaging for the evaluation of liver pathology, a second, completely revised and enlarged edition of this book was felt necessary – despite only three years having elapsed since the first edition. New chapters have been added covering important and highly relevant topics, among which imaging of pseudolesions, imaging of neoplastic diseases in pediatric subjects, imaging of bile ducts, MR angiography and imaging pre and post liver transplantation.
MRI of the Heart and Vessels
In recent years magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has enriched the technological potential available for the characterization of cardiovascular pathologies, adding substantial advantages to other non-invasive techniques. This technique, which is intrinsically digital and has reduced operator dependency, allows the performance of image analysis in a quantitative and reproducible manner. In virtue of its added diagnostic value and inherent refinements that allow construction of two- and three-dimensional images, MRI is gaining a primary role in the histopathological and physiopathological understanding of a large number of pathologies concerning the heart and vessels. This text is addressed both to MRI operators seeking specific technical information and to clinicians who wish to have a better understanding of the diagnostic and management advantages that MRI can offer.
MRI in Clinical Practice
The book covers the basic Physics behind MRI, quality assurance, up-to-date safety guidelines and a useful gallery of image artefacts. Part of the book focuses on the specific areas of the body in which MRI is currently exploited, describing how MRI is performed in practice. In each of these sections, a common theme is followed with illustrations of MR images acquired with clinically relevant settings and typical imaging protocols are also explicitly stated. Additional information is provided which includes a subjective view of the strengths and weaknesses of MRI in comparison to other imaging modalities. As well as covering routine clinical techniques, the latest advanced methods (e.g. spectroscopy, fMRI, diffusion, high field MRI) are discussed and placed into the context of clinical application.
MRI Atlas of MS Lesions
MRI has become the main paraclinical test in the diagnosis and management of multiple sclerosis. We have demonstrated more than 400 pictures of different typical and atypical MS lesions in this atlas.
MR Imaging in White Matter Diseases of the Brain and Spinal Cord
Comprises a series of comprehensive and up-to-date reviews on the use of MR imaging in these major neurological conditions. The diverse available MR techniques, such as magnetization transfer MRI, diffusion-weighted MRI, MR spectroscopy, functional MRI, cell-specific MRI, perfusion MRI, and microscopic imaging with ultra-high field MRI, offer an extraordinarily powerful means of gaining fundamental in vivo insights into disease processes. MR Cholangiopancreatography : Atlas with Cross-Sectional Imaging Correlation
Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) is a novel non-invasive technique for diagnosis of pancreatic-biliary disease. The purpose of this book is to highlight the advantages, limitations and indications of MRCP. Specific examples have been selected to showcase the utility of this technique in a large variety of clinical conditions. Each example is purposefully used to stress important technical features, to give practical advice, or to discuss the role of MRCP in specific clinical situations. Important features of the book are the high quality of the illustrations, the reduction of the text to relevant and practically useful issues, and the simple and logic organisation of the case material. The book should show: the optimal technique in MRCP, the pitfalls and limitations.
Mouse Models of Human Blood Cancers : Basic Research and Pre-clinical Applications
Although it remains an open question among some people whether mice and humans are similar in disease development, the laboratory mouse has emerged as the preeminent animal model for human diseases. This is underscored by the recently completed mouse and human genome projects, which have revealed that mice and humans share the vast majority of their genes, and thus get many of the same diseases, and for the same reasons. Emphasizing why mouse models are valuable in vivo systems for understanding disease mechanisms and developing therapeutic strategies for human blood cancers, "Mouse Models of Human Blood Cancers: Basic Research and Pre-clinical Applications," edited by Shaoguang Li, aims on presenting thorough analyses of the pathological features and the molecular bases of several major types of blood cancer and to describe translational research using mouse cancer models.

The most frequent of them all are the many types of malformations of the cardiovascular system, the heart and its blood vessels.Study of these conditions during the twentieth century took many forms, revolving about examination and analysis of their causes, genetic, nongenetic, and complex. To aid in unraveling the complexities of this causation, various influences on their frequency are considered, among them social conditions, maternal health, birthweight, newborn maturity. And of course the known and possible environmental bases of their occurrence are fully described.

Recently, evidence has been accumulated which shows that some of the groups formerly regarded as independent "phyla" such as Pogonophora (now recognized as Siboglinidae), Echiura, Myzostomida and perhaps Sipuncula, are most probably nothing else than greatly modified Annelida. The extreme morphological diversity found especially in Polychaeta displays the plasticity of a simple segmented organisation that basically is nothing else but a serial repetition of identical units. Thus, annelids are highly important to our understanding of fundamental questions about morphological and adaptive diversity, as well as clarifying evolutionary changes and phylogenetic relationships. The book aims to summarize our knowledge on Polychaetes polychaetes and their allies and gives an overview of recent advances gained by studies that employed conventional and modern methods plus, increasingly and importantly, the use of molecular markers and computer-assisted kinship analyses. It also reflects the state of art in polychaete sciences and presents new questions and controversies. As such it will significantly influence the direction of research on Polychaeta and their related taxa.

Moral Education : Beyond the Teaching of Right and Wrong
This volume is unique in providing a comprehensive discussion of moral education in the light of a range of ethical theories. In a balanced, thoughtful and penetrating account, all of these are shown to have a contribution to make to our moral understanding, and hence to moral education, even if none provides a definitive criterion of moral conduct. Though divine command is rejected as a source of moral justification, the possible contribution of some religious traditions to moral education is sympathetically considered. Fashionable relativism and recent moves towards inculcatory authoritarianism are both firmly rejected. The argument is philosophically rigorous throughout. Monograph of the Urostyloidea (Ciliophora, Hypotricha)
This monograph is the second of a series treating the hypotrichs, a major part of the spirotrichous ciliates. The urostyloids are characterised by a zigzag-arrangement of the ventral cirri. Like the first part of the series, the Oxytrichidae, it summarises the morphological, morphogenetic, faunistic, and ecological data from the past 230 years, scattered in more than 1300 references from all over the world. Dichotomous keys lead to 36 genera and subgenera comprising 153 species illustrated by more than 2100 figures, including original ones. The treatise offers taxonomists, cell biologists, and ecologists a thorough and up-to-date revision because for each species a detailed list of synonyms, a discussion of the nomenclature and systematics, and an extensive description of the morphology and ecology, including almost all published faunistic records, are provided. With the monographs of the Urostyloidea and the Oxytrichidae the interested scientist can identify more than 320 species of hypotrichs, which are an important component of the eukaryotic microbial life in limnetic, marine, and terrestrial habitats.

Molecules in Superfluid Helium Nanodroplets : Spectroscopy, Structure, and Dynamics
This book covers recent advances in experiments using the ultra-cold, very weakly perturbing superfluid environment provided by helium nanodroplets for high resolution spectroscopic, structural and dynamic studies of molecules and synthetic clusters. The recent infra-red, UV-Vis studies of radicals, molecules, clusters, ions and biomolecules, as well as laser dynamical and laser orientational studies, are reviewed. The Coulomb explosion studies of the uniquely quantum structures of small helium clusters, X-ray imaging of large droplets and electron diffraction of embedded molecules are also described. Particular emphasis is given to the synthesis and detection of new species by mass spectrometry and deposition electron microscopy.
Molecular Wires : From Design to Properties
In the emerging field of nanoscience the desire to construct objects which in the molecular scale can resemble and act as macroscopic devices is a constant trend. Amongst the simplest but also most attractive functional component molecular wires are surely the most investigated. The reason for such interest is quite obvious since wires, in today world, are used all around us and are the most indispensable unit to assemble any type of electronic devices.In this issue the synthesis and characterization of molecular wires based on organic or metal complexes components, their properties and some theoretical background will be illustrated.
