The Grammar of Interactional Language

Addresses this gap by providing the first in-depth overview of approaches towards interactional language across different frameworks and linguistic sub-disciplines. Based on the insights that emerge, a formal framework is developed to discover and compare language in interaction across different languages: the interactional spine hypothesis. Two case-studies are presented: confirmationals (such as eh and huh) and response markers (such as yes and no), both of which show evidence for systematic grammatical knowledge.

The Grammar of Graphics

Presents a unique foundation for producing almost every quantitative graphic found in scientific journals, newspapers, statistical packages, and data visualization systems. While the tangible results of this work have been several visualization software libraries, this book focuses on the deep structures involved in producing quantitative graphics from data. What are the rules that underlie the production of pie charts, bar charts, scatterplots, function plots, maps, mosaics, and radar charts? Those less interested in the theoretical and mathematical foundations can still get a sense of the richness and structure of the system by examining the numerous and often unique color graphics it can produce. The second edition is almost twice the size of the original, with six new chapters and substantial revision. Much of the added material makes this book suitable for survey courses in visualization and statistical graphics.

The book is devoted to molecular modes of the function of the Golgi apparatus as a whole, taking into account all experimental data even if they contradict existing models of Golgi function. The aim of the book is to make the functional organization of the Golgi apparatus more understandable by keeping it as simple as possible but also as full as possible.

The Geometry of Syzygies : A Second Course in Algebraic Geometry and Commutative Algebra

Algebraic Geometry often seems very abstract, but in fact it is full of concrete examples and problems. This side of the subject can be approached through the equations of a variety, and the syzygies of these equations are a necessary part of the study. This book illustrates the use of syzygies in many concrete geometric considerations, from interpolation to the study of canonical curves.It is also suitable for self-study by a reader who knows a little commutative algebra and algebraic geometry already. As an aid to the reader, an appendix provides a summary of commutative algebra, tying together examples and major results from a wide range of topics.

The GEO handbook on biodiversity observation networks

Biodiversity observation systems are almost everywhere inadequate to meet local, national and international (treaty) obligations. As a result of alarmingly rapid declines in biodiversity in the modern era, there is a strong, worldwide desire to upgrade our monitoring systems, but little clarity on what is actually needed and how it can be assembled from the elements which are already present. This book intends to provide practical guidance to broadly-defined biodiversity observation networks at all scales, but predominantly the national scale and higher. This is a practical how-to book with substantial policy relevance.

The Genetic Code and the Origin of Life

Early Thoughts on RNA and the Origin of Life The full impact of the essential role of the nucleic acids in biological systems was forcefully demonstrated by the research community in the 1950s. Although Avery and his collaborators had identified DNA as the genetic material responsible for the transformation of bacteria in 1944, it was not until the early 1950s that the Hershey-Chase experiments provided a more direct demonstration of this role. Finally, the structural DNA double helix proposed by Watson and Crick in 1953 clearly created a structural frame­ work for the role of DNA as both information carrier and as a molecule that could undergo the necessary replication needed for daughter cells. Research continued by Kornberg and his colleagues in the mid-1950s emphasized the biochemistry and enzymology of DNA replication. At the same time, there was a growing interest in the role of RNA. The 1956 dis­ covery by David Davies and myself showed that polyadenylic acid and polyuridylic acid could form a double-helical RNA molecule but that it differed somewhat from DN A A large number of experiments were subsequendy carried out with synthetic polyribonucleotides which illustrated that RNA could form even more complicated helical structures in which the specificity of hydrogen bonding was the key element in determining the molecular conformation. Finally, in I960,1 could show that it was possible to make a hybrid helix.

The Ganges Water Diversion : Environmental Effects and Implications

Deals with environmental effects on both sides of the border between Bangladesh and India caused by the Ganges water diversion. This issue came to my attention in early 1976 when news media in Bangladesh and overseas, began publications of articles on the unilateral withdrawal of a huge quantity of water from the Ganges River through the commissioning of the Farakka Barrage in India. I first pursued the subject professionally in 1984 while working as a contributor for Bangladesh Today, Holiday and New Nation. During the next two decades, I followed the protracted hydro-political negotiations between the riparian countries in the Ganges basin, and I traveled extensively to observe the environmental and ecological changes in Bangladesh as well as India that occurred due to the water diversion. The Ganges, one of the longest rivers of the world originates at the Gangotri glacier in the Himalayas and flows across the plains of North India. Eventually the river splits into two main branches and empties into the Bay of Bengal. The conflict of diversion and sharing of the Ganges water arose in the middle of the last century when the government of India decided to implement a barrage at Farakka to resolve a navigation problem at the Kolkata Port.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the IFIP WG 8.2, 9.1, 9.4 Joint Working Conference on the Future of Digital Work: The Challenge of Inequality, IFIPJWC 2020, which was supposed to be held in Hyderabad, India, in December 2020, but was held virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This conference was organized for IFIP’s 60th anniversary and to commemorate its mission to “achieve worldwide professional and socially responsible development and application of ICTs.” The 22 full papers presented together with an introduction and two keynotes were carefully reviewed and selected from 29 submissions. They are organized in topics on: innovation and entrepreneurship; the social significance of digital platforms; transforming healthcare; and the dark side of digitalization.

The Functional Calculus for Sectorial Operators

The present monograph deals with the functional calculus for unbounded operators in general and for sectorial operators in particular. Sectorial operators abound in the theory of evolution equations, especially those of parabolic type. They satisfy a certain resolvent condition that leads to a holomorphic functional calculus based on Cauchy-type integrals. Via an abstract extension procedure, this elementary functional calculus is then extended to a large class of (even meromorphic) functions. With this functional calculus at hand, the book elegantly covers holomorphic semigroups, fractional powers, and logarithms. Special attention is given to perturbation results and the connection with the theory of interpolation spaces. A chapter is devoted to the exciting interplay between numerical range conditions, similarity problems and functional calculus on Hilbert spaces. Two chapters describe applications, for example to elliptic operators, to numerical approximations of parabolic equations, and to the maximal regularity problem. This book is the first systematic account of a subject matter which lies in the intersection of operator theory, evolution equations, and harmonic analysis.

The Fourfold Way in Real Analysis : An Alternative to the Metaplectic Representation

The fourfold way starts with the consideration of entire functions of one variable satisfying specific estimates at infinity, both on the real line and the pure imaginary line. A major part of classical analysis, mainly that which deals with Fourier analysis and related concepts, can then be given a parameter-dependent analogue. The parameter is some real number modulo 2, the classical case being obtained when it is an integer. The space L2(R) has to give way to a pseudo-Hilbert space, on which a new translation-invariant integral still exists. All this extends to the n-dimensional case, and in the alternative to the metaplectic representation so obtained, it is the space of Lagrangian subspaces of R2n that plays the usual role of the complex Siegel domain. In fourfold analysis, the spectrum of the harmonic oscillator can be an arbitrary class modulo the integers.

The Four Pillars of Geometry

The Four Pillars of Geometry approaches geometry in four different ways, spending two chapters on each. This makes the subject accessible to readers of all mathematical tastes, from the visual to the algebraic. Not only does each approach offer a different view; the combination of viewpoints yields insights not available in most books at this level. For example, it is shown how algebra emerges from projective geometry, and how the hyperbolic plane emerges from the real projective line.The author begins with Euclid-style construction and axiomatics, then proceeds to linear algebra when it becomes convenient to replace tortuous arguments with simple calculations. Next, he uses projective geometry to explain why objects look the way they do, as well as to explain why geometry is entangled with algebra. And lastly, the author introduces transformation groups---not only to clarify the differences between geometries, but also to exhibit geometries that are unexpectedly the same.

The Fate of Persistent Organic Pollutants in the North Sea : Multiple Year Model Simulations of g-HCH, a-HCH and PCB 153

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are harmful to human health and to the environment. Their fate in the marine environment is not yet fully understood. An ocean model (FANTOM) has been developed to investigate the fate of selected POPs in the North Sea. The main focus of the model is on quantifying the distribution of POPs and their aquatic pathways. This is the first time that a spatially-resolved, measurement-based ocean transport model has been used to study POP-like substances, at least on the regional scale. The model was applied for the southern North Sea and tested by studying the behaviour of g-HCH, a-HCH and PCB 153 in sea water. This model study proves that transport models, such as FANTOM, are capable of reproducing realistic multi-year temporal and spatial trends of selected POPs and can be used to address further scientific questions.

The eyes of the skin : Architecture and the senses

It asks the far-reaching question why, when there are five senses, has one single sense – sight – become so predominant in architectural culture and design? With the ascendancy of the digital and the all-pervasive use of the image electronically, it is a subject that has become all the more pressing and topical since the first edition’s publication in the mid-1990s. Juhani Pallasmaa argues that the suppression of the other four sensory realms has led to the overall impoverishment of our built environment, often diminishing the emphasis on the spatial experience of a building and architecture’s ability to inspire, engage and be wholly life enhancing.

This book is the proceedings of the GREEN3, the third in a four-yearly series of international symposia that discuss aspects of geotechnical engineering intimately related to the environment.

The Evolution of Biotechnology : From Natufians to Nanotechnology

Traces the evolution of biotechnology in the broadest sense from prehistoric organismal manipulation by our first settled ancestors through to speculation about future directions for the technology as it increasingly intersects with other high technologies such as IT and Nanotech. The trajectory is demonstrated by various events throughout history that have intersected or built on one another to lead to the forward progression of a technology. Obviously, with such a broad canvas much selectivity is involved in the choices made to advance the narrative and, while the subjects chosen are not capricious, they are influenced by the author’s perspective. In addition we have made some attempt, where validated resources exist, to present our perspective on how individual personalities and their particular contextual experience influenced the direction in which they carried the science or the science carried them.
