The latest instalment in the renowned Pamphlet Architecture series features the technologically progressive young firm Aranda/Lasch, illustrating their use of advanced computational methods and algorithmic code in architectural design. Tooling is broken down into seven sections: blending, cracking, flocking, losing, packing, spiralling, and weaving, each corresponding to a pattern generated by computer codes, which in turn creates an organizational template for putting projects together - from building materials to large-scale populations. Tool and Object : A History and Philosophy of Category Theory
The book is first of all a history of category theory from the beginnings to A. Grothendieck and F.W. Lawvere. Category theory was an important conceptual tool in 20th century mathematics whose influence on some mathematical subdisciplines (above all algebraic topology and algebraic geometry) is analyzed. Category theory also has an important philosophical aspect: on the one hand its set-theoretical foundation is less obvious than for other mathematical theories, and on the other hand it unifies conceptually a large part of modern mathematics and may therefore be considered as somewhat fundamental itself. The role of this philosophical aspect in the historical development is the second focus of the book.

Toll and Toll-Like Receptors : An Immunologic Perspective
Toll-Like Receptor (TLR) biology would prove to be one of these secrets. Analyses of the evolution of these receptors (Tolls and TLRs) have also helped us to rethink immune system phylogeny. In the first part of this chapter the history of the discovery of Toll and TLR biology is described. The evolution of the TLR genes and theories of immune function are covered in later sections. In the first chapter, "The Function of Toll-Like Receptors", Zlatko Dembic sets the stage by introducing us to many of the components of the immune system and their relationships vis a vis Toll receptors. Tissue Mechanics
Tissue Mechanics, Second Edition is about the mechanics of tissues for use at the advanced undergraduate level or above. Tissues transmit mechanical loads just like bridges and building structures. Not only do they transmit loads, but also they adapt their own structures so that the structures will transmit the mechanical loads more effectively, unlike bridges and building structures. The structures of living tissues are continually changing due to growth and response to the tissue environment, including the mechanical environment. The objective of this text is to describe the nature of the composite components of a tissue, the cellular processes that produce these constituents, the assembly of the constituents into a hierarchical structure, and the behavior of the tissue’s composite structure in the adaptation to its mechanical environment. A tissue’s mechanical environment is the history of mechanical loading experienced by the tissue in some reference time period, like a day.

This special issue of Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology includes much of the research presented at the recent Second International Tissue Engineering Conference. Held in Crete, Greece, as part of the Aegean Conference Series, the Second International Tissue Engineering Conference was organized by Dr. Kiki Hellman of the Hellman Group, Dr. John Jansen of the Nijmegen University Medical Center, and Dr. Antonios Mikos of Rice University. The conference brought over 150 researchers from around the world to the Knossos Royal Village Conference Center in Crete from May 22 to 27, 2005. Following along the lines of the conference program, this volume is divided into seven sections, focusing on stem cells, signals, scaffolds, applied technologies, animal models, regulatory issues, as well as specific tissue engineering strategies. Both original research papers and review papers are presented.

PHYSIOLOGIC ANATOMY OF THE THYROID GLAND: The thyroid gland, located immediately below the larynx on each side of and anterior to the trachea, is one of the largest endocrine glands. The thyroid secretes two major metabolic hormones thyroxine and triiodothyronine, commonly called T4 and T3, respectively. the thyroid gland is composed of large numbers of closed follicles that are filled with a secretory substance called colloid and lined with cuboidal epithelial cells that secrete into the interior of the follicles. The major constituent of colloid is the large glycoprotein thyroglobulin, which contains the thyroid hormones. The thyroid gland also contains C cells that secrete calcitonin, a hormone that contributes to regulation of plasma calcium ion concentration.
