The PATAT conferences, which are held every 2 years, bring together - searchers and practitioners from across the broad spectrum of inter-disciplinary research activity in search methodologies for automated timetable generation. This includes university timetabling, school timetabling, personnel rostering, transportation timetabling, sports scheduling. The programme of the 2006 c- ference featured 70 presentations which represented the state of the art in au- mated timetabling: there were four plenary papers, 17 full papers, 41 extended abstracts, and eight system demonstrations. After the conference, all authors were invited to submit their papers to a second round of rigorous refereeing for this volume of selected revised papers. We are pleased to have accepted 25 - pers for this volume. This ?gure represents the highest number of acceptances in a PATAT post-proceedings volume and is a testament to the high standards of the papers that were submitted. The organization of the book is structured around particular problem areas.

Power Management of Digital Circuits in Deep Sub-Micron CMOS Technologies
In the deep sub-micron regime, the power consumption has become one of the most important issues for competitive design of digital circuits. Due to dramatically increasing leakage currents, the power consumption does not take advantage of technology scaling as before. State-of-art power reduction techniques like the use of multiple supply and threshold voltages, transistor stack forcing and power gating are discussed with respect to implementation and power saving capability. Focus is given especially on technology dependencies, process variations and technology scaling. Design and implementation issues are discussed with respect to the trade-off between power reduction, performance degradation, and system level constraints. A complete top-down design flow is demonstrated for power gating techniques introducing new design methodologies for the switch sizing task and circuit blocks for data-retention and block activation. The leakage reduction ratio and the minimum power-down time are introduced as figures of merit to describe the power gating technique on system level and give a relation to physical circuit parameters.

Makes two really compelling arguments: Firstly, that planning theory has lost its focus on the planning process itself and how it can be used effectively to help people figure out what they want, how to get it, and why… Secondly, that planning theory also has lost its focus on the institutional interconnections of planning processes from national, to state or regional, to local levels, and back up again. I think the author is quite right on both counts… It strikes me that what is needed now is an integration of macro and micro perspectives, which is a point that the book makes at various stages.
