Probabilistic Modeling in Bioinformatics and Medical Informatics

Probabilistic Modelling in Bioinformatics and Medical Informatics has been written for researchers and students in statistics, machine learning, and the biological sciences. The first part of this book provides a self-contained introduction to the methodology of Bayesian networks. The following parts demonstrate how these methods are applied in bioinformatics and medical informatics. All three fields - the methodology of probabilistic modeling, bioinformatics, and medical informatics - are evolving very quickly. The text should therefore be seen as an introduction, offering both elementary tutorials as well as more advanced applications and case studies.

Pressure Vessel Design

This book guides through general and fundamental problems of pressure vessel design. It moreover considers also problems which seem to be of lower importance but which turn out to be crucial in the design phase. The basic approach is rigorously scientific with a complete theoretical development of the topics treated, but the analysis is always pushed so far as to offer concrete and precise calculation criteria that can be immediately applied to actual designs. This is accomplished through appropriate algorithms that lead to final equations or to characteristic parameters defined through mathematical equations.

Premiers pas en simulation = First steps in simulation

Why simulation techniques? Simulation methods, designed for use in statistics and operations research, have experienced and continue to develop rapidly due to the extraordinary evolution of computers. Applications are found in industry and in economics, or even social sciences, in particle physics, in astronomy and in many other fields. In many situations, whether in everyday life or in scientific research, the researcher is faced with problems which he seeks solutions on the basis of certain initial assumptions and constraints. To solve this type of problem, there exist analytical methods applicable to situations where the model makes it possible to treat the di? Erent variables by mathematically manageable equations, and numerical methods where the complexity of the model imposes a fragmentation of the problem, in particular by the identification of the various variables which come into play and the study of their interactions. This last approach is often accompanied by a large mass of calculations. Simulation techniques are numerical techniques: to simulate a phenomenon essentially means to carefully reconstruct its evolution.

Postmodern Analysis

“Modern Analysis” as represented in the works of the Bourbaki group or in the textbooks by Jean Dieudonn´ e is characterized by its systematic and axiomatic treatment and by its drive towards a high level of abstraction. Given the tendency of many prior treatises on analysis to degenerate into a collection of rather unconnected tricks to solve special problems, this de?nitely represented a healthy achievement. In any case, for the development of a consistent and powerful mathematical theory, it seems to be necessary to concentrate solely on the internal problems and structures and to neglect the relations to other ?elds of scienti?c, even of mathematical study for a certain while. Almost complete isolation may be required to reach the level of intellectual elegance and perfection that only a good mathem- ical theory can acquire. However, once this level has been reached, it can be useful to open one’s eyes again to the inspiration coming from concrete external problems.

Posn(R) and Eisenstein Series

Posn(R) and Eisenstein Series provides an introduction, requiring minimal prerequisites, to the analysis on symmetric spaces of positive definite real matrices as well as quotients of this space by the unimodular group of integral matrices. The approach is presented in very classical terms and includes material on special functions, notably gamma and Bessel functions, and focuses on certain mathematical aspects of Eisenstein series.

Positive Operators

this monograph presents a comprehensive study of positive operators between Riesz spaces and Banach lattices. Since the first publication of this book, (Academic Press, 1985), the subject of positive operators and Riesz spaces has found many applications in several disciplines, including social sciences and engineering. It is well known that many linear operators between Banach spaces arising in classical analysis are in fact positive operators. Therefore we study here positive operators in the setting of Riesz spaces and Banach lattices and from both the algebraic and topological points of view.

Points fixes, zéros et la méthode de Newton = Fixed points, zeros and Newton's method

This work is devoted to the fixed points of differentiable applications, to the zeros of non-linear systems and to Newton's method. It is aimed at masters students or preparing for the aggregation of mathematics and confirmed researchers. The first part is devoted to the method of successive approximations and confronts a “dynamical systems” point of view (Grobman-Hartman theorems, of the stable manifold) with examples resulting from numerical analysis. The second part of this work presents Newton's method and its most recent developments (Smale's alpha theory, under- or over-determined systems). It presents a new approach to this subject and a set of original results published for the first time in a French-language work. This is an advanced text on fixed points, zeros of nonlinear systems and the Newton method. Its first part, devoted to fixed points, includes the Grobman-Hartman and the stable manifold theorems. The second part describes the Newton method from a modern point of view: Smale's alpha theory, underdetermined and overdetermined systems of equations. These results are illustrated by various examples from numerical analysis.

Piecewise-smooth Dynamical Systems : Theory and Applications

The primary purpose of this book is to present a coherent framework for understanding the dynamics of piecewise-smooth and hybrid systems. An informal introduction asserts the ubiquity of such models with examples drawn from mechanics, electronics, control theory and physiology. The main thrust is to classify complex behavior via bifurcation theory in a systematic yet applicable way. The key concept is that of a discontinuity-induced bifurcation, which generalizes diverse phenomena such as grazing, border-collision, sliding, chattering and the period-adding route to chaos. The results are presented in an informal style and illustrated with copious examples, both theoretical and experimental.

Pharmacocinétique avec Mathematica® = Pharmacokinetics with Mathematica®

This work provides a computer method which allows you to calculate yourself the dispensing of a drug and to visualize the result by varying the ordinary parameters of the medical prescription. It is based on the practical use of Mathematica® as a single or repeated administration regardless of the route of administration in one or two distribution compartments. The traditional differential equations are all replaced by the Laplace transformation which also makes it possible to better differentiate the phenomenon of linearity and non-linearity. It also offers an introduction to population kinetics which, in essence, validates previous calculations and paves the way for modern use of pharmacokinetics for drugs that require greater precision of use. Students of medicine, science and pharmacy will benefit from reading this book, as will drug professionals.
