Representations, Wavelets, and Frames : A Celebration of the Mathematical Work of Lawrence W. Baggett

Motivated by applications, an underlying theme in analysis is that of finding bases and understanding the transforms that implement them. These may be based on Fourier techniques or involve wavelet tools; they may be orthogonal or have redundancies (e.g., frames from signal analysis). Representations, Wavelets, and Frames contains chapters pertaining to this theme from experts and expositors of renown in mathematical analysis and representation theory. Topics are selected with an emphasis on fundamental and timeless techniques with a geometric and spectral-theoretic flavor. The material is self-contained and presented in a pedagogical style that is accessible to students from both pure and applied mathematics while also of interest to engineers.

Reliable Software Technology – Ada-Europe 2005 ; 10th Ada-Europe International Conference on Reliable Software Technologies, York, UK, June 20-24, 2005, Proceedings

Started on the inspired initiative of Prof. Alfred Strohmeier back in 1996, and spawned from the annual Ada-Europe conference that had previously run for 16 consecutive years, the International Conference on Reliable Software Technologies celebrated this year its tenth anniversary by going to York, UK, where the ?rst series of technical meetings on Ada were held in the 1970s. Besides being a beautiful and historical place in itself, York also hosts the Depa- ment of Computer Science of the local university, whose Real-Time Group has been tremendously in?uential in shaping the Ada language and in the progress on real-time computing worldwide. This year’s conference was therefore put together under excellent auspices, in a very important year for the Ada community in view of the forthc- ing completion of the revision process that is upgrading the language standard to face the challenges of the new millennium. The conference took place on June 20–24, 2005. It was as usual sponsored by Ada-Europe, the European federation of national Ada societies, in cooperation with ACM SIGAda. The conference was organized by selected staff of the University of York teamed up with collaborators from various places in Europe, in what turned out to be a very effective instance of distributed collaborative processing. The conference also enjoyed the generous support of 11 industrial sponsors.

Relativistic Dynamics of a Charged Sphere : Updating the Lorentz-Abraham Model

This book takes a fresh, systematic approach to determining the equation of motion for the classical model of the electron introduced by Lorentz more than 100 years ago. The original derivations of Lorentz, Abraham, Poincaré and Schott are modified and generalized for the charged insulator model of the electron to obtain an equation of motion consistent with causal solutions to the Maxwell-Lorentz equations and the equations of special relativity. The solutions to the resulting equation of motion are free of pre-acceleration and runaway behavior. Binding forces and a total stress–momentum–energy tensor are derived for the charged insulator model. Appendices provide simplified derivations of the self-force and power at arbitrary velocity.

Relativistic Astrophysics and Cosmology : A Primer

This book offers a succinct and self-contained treatment of general relativity and its application to neutron stars, black holes, gravitational waves and cosmology, at an intermediate level. The required mathematical concepts are introduced informally, following geometrical intuition as much as possible. The approach is theoretical, but there is ample discussion of observational aspects and instrumental issues where appropriate.

Redox Systems Under Nano-Space Control

The generation of novel redox systems under nano-space control is one of the most exciting fields in present organic, inorganic, and supramolecular chemistry. The authors have drawn together the newest information on the construction of such novel redox systems using nano-space control of complexation or molecular chain-induced spaces and metal- or self-assembled spaces through combining techniques in coordination, supramolecular, and bio-inspired chemistry. Such design on the nano level produces hybrid conjugated systems composed of transition and synthetic metals, metallohosts, redox-active self-assembled monolayers of helical peptides, DNA-directed metal arrays, photoactive antibody systems, chiral rotaxanes, and redox-active imprinted polymers. In the future, these systems will be the basis for novel selective electron-transfer reactions as well as new functional materials and catalysts.

Red eye syndrome

Red eye is the cardinal sign of ocular inflammation. The condition is usually benign and can be managed by primary care physicians. Conjunctivitis is the most common cause of red eye. Other common causes include blepharitis, corneal abrasion, foreign body, subconjunctival hemorrhage, keratitis, iritis, glaucoma, chemical burn, and scleritis. Signs and symptoms of red eye include eye discharge, redness, pain, photophobia, itching, and visual changes. Generally, viral and bacterial conjunctivitis are self-limiting conditions, and serious complications are rare. Because there is no specific diagnostic test to differentiate viral from bacterial conjunctivitis, most cases are treated using broad-spectrum antibiotics. Allergies or irritants also may cause conjunctivitis.

Reconsidering constitutional formation II decisive constitutional normativity : From old liberties to new precedence

This second volume of ReConFort, addresses the decisive role of constitutional normativity, and focuses on discourses concerning the legal role of constitutional norms. Taken together with ReConFort I (National Sovereignty), it calls for an innovative reassessment of constitutional history drawing on key categories to convey the legal nature of the constitution itself (national sovereignty, precedence, justiciability of power, judiciary as constituted power). Also included in this volume are the French originals and English translations of two vital documents. The first – Emmanuel Joseph Sieyès’ Du Jury Constitutionnaire (1795) – highlights an early attempt to reconcile the democratic values of the French Revolution with the pragmatic need to legally protect the Revolution. The second – the 1812 draft of the Constitution of the Kingdom of Poland – presents the ‘constitutional propaganda’ of the Russian Tsar Alexander I to bargain for the support of the Lithuanian and Polish nobility. These documents open new avenues of research into Europe’s constitutional history: one replete with diverse contexts and national experiences.

Recent Advances in Matrix and Operator Theory

This book expands the lectures given at IWOTA’05 (International Workshop on Operator Theory and Applications) which was held at the University of Connecticut, Storrs, USA, July 24–27, 2005. Real-time communication protocols for multi-hop ad-hoc networks : Wireless networking in production and control systems

This book focuses on core functionalities for wireless real-time multi-hop networking with TDMA (time-division multiple access) and their integration into a flexible, versatile, fully operational, self-contained communication system. The use of wireless real-time communication technologies for the flexible networking of sensors, actuators, and controllers is a crucial building block for future production and control systems. Wireless HART and ISA 100.11a, two technologies that have been developed predominantly for industrial use, are currently available. However, a closer analysis of these approaches reveals certain deficits. Current research on wireless real-time communication systems shows potential to remove these limitations, resulting in flexible, versatile, and robust solutions that can be implemented on today’s low-cost and resource-constrained hardware platforms.

Reality Lost : Markets of Attention, Misinformation and Manipulation

This book looks at how a democracy can devolve into a post-factual state. The media is being flooded by populist narratives, fake news, conspiracy theories and make-believe. Misinformation is turning into a challenge for all of us, whether politicians, journalists, or citizens. In the age of information, attention is a prime asset and may be converted into money, power, and influence – sometimes at the cost of facts. The point is to obtain exposure on the air and in print media, and to generate traffic on social media platforms. With information in abundance and attention scarce, the competition is ever fiercer with truth all too often becoming the first victim. It is an analysis of the nuts and bolts of the information market, the attention economy and media eco-system which may pave way to postfactual democracy. Here misleading narratives become the basis for political opinion formation, debate, and legislation. To curb this development and the threat it poses to democratic deliberation, political self-determination and freedom, it is necessary that we first grasp the mechanisms and structural conditions that cause it.
