Grammatical Inference ; Algorithms and Applications : 9th International Colloquium, ICGI 2008 Saint-Malo, France, September 22-24, 2008 Proceedings

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 9th International Colloquium on Grammatical Inference, ICGI 2008, held in Saint-Malo, France, in September 2008.The 21 revised full papers and 8 revised short papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 36 submissions. The topics of the papers presented vary from theoretical results of learning algorithms to innovative applications of grammatical inference, and from learning several interesting classes of formal grammars to applications to natural language processing.

Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz : The Art of Controversies

All these perspectives (and more) are united in what this book identifies as his Art of Controversies, which might also be called an Art of Dialectical Cooperation. For it is based on the idea that knowledge production, acquisition, and evolution is not a one-man affair, but the result of the cooperation of many, coming from different perspectives; whence it follows that not only tolerance vis-à-vis the other, but also valuing the other’s contribution and integrating it – whether it stems from another age, continent, culture, discipline, religion, or individual – is indispensable. This dialectical Leibniz that emerges from the selected texts here translated, commented, and interpreted in the light of their context, isn’t for sure the familiar one. Yet, perhaps surprisingly.

Goodman and Gilman's the pharmacological basis of therapeutics ; 14th ed.

A collaboration between two friends and professors at Yale, Louis Goodman and Alfred Gilman. Over the years, “G&G” has been acclaimed as the “blue bible” of pharmacology. Surely much of that acclaim reflects the book’s purpose, delineated by the original authors and steadily adhered to over 81 years: to correlate pharmacology with related medical sciences, to reinterpret the actions and uses of drugs in light of advances in medicine and the basic biomedical sciences, to emphasize the application of pharmacodynamics to therapeutics, and to create a book that would be useful to students of pharmacology and to healthcare practitioners.

At the same time, I was a junior Brand Manager at Procter & Gamble w- ried about a much more mundane problem: how to keep my products on the shelf. Embedding RFID tags in the products, and RFID readers in the shelf, seemed like the perfect – indeed the only – way to do this. But I needed RFID to be cheaper, better, and standardized in an open system. In early 1999, by sheer chance, I met Brock and Sarma. The result was a potent meeting of minds. I was looking to fund research, and Brock, Sarma and Siu were looking for research funding. Working with Alan Haberman of the Uniform Code Council, one of the founding fathers of the UPC bar code, and Allan Boath of the Gillette C- pany, we developed a plan for a new industry funded research consortium at MIT.

Gesture smart control

Nowadays actions are increasingly being handled in electronic ways, instead of physical interaction. From earlier times biometrics is used in the authentication of a person. It recognizes a person by using a human trait associated with it like eyes (by calculating the distance between the eyes) and using hand gestures, fingerprint detection, face detection etc. Advantages of using these traits for identification are that they uniquely identify a person and cannot be forgotten or lost. These are unique features of a human being which are being used widely to make the human life simpler. Hand gesture recognition system is a powerful tool that supports efficient interaction between the user and the computer.

Geotechnical Slope Analysis

The influence of initial stresses, pore water pressures and seismic forces has been explored not only on performance indicators such as the ‘Factor of Safety’ but also on the location of critical slip surfaces. In addition to these factors, it is shown that the chosen method of analysis may also have a significant influence on the location of the critical slip surface. This book focuses on research studies concerning slope behaviour, the occurrence of landslides and the use of alternative methods of analysis and interpretation. The importance of uncertainties in slope performance and, more broadly, in geotechnical engineering is emphasised.

Geodesy is the science dealing with the determination of the position of points in space, the shape and gravity field of the Earth and with their time variations.
