Charismatic Christianity in Finland, Norway, and Sweden : Case Studies in Historical and Contemporary Developments

The history of Charismatic Christianity in the Nordic countries reaches as far back as Pentecostalism itself. The bounds of these categories remain a topic of discussion, but Nordic countries have played a vital role for developing this rapidly spreading form of world-wide Christianity. Until now, research on global Charismatic Christianity has largely overlooked the region. This book addresses and analyzes its historical and contemporary trajectories in Finland, Norway and Sweden. Through a selection of cases written by Nordic scholars from various disciplines, it demonstrates historical and contemporary diversity as well as interconnections between local, national, and global currents. Highlighting change and continuity, the anthology reveals new aspects of Charismatic Christianity.

Building from tradition : Local materials and methods in contemporary architecture

Examines the recent resurgence of interest in the handmade building and the use of local and renewable materials in contemporary construction. In the past, raw materials were shaped to provide shelter and to accommodate the cultural, social, and economic needs of individuals and communities. This is still true today as architects, engineers, and builders turn once again to local resources and methods, not simply for constructing buildings, but also as a strategy for supporting social engagement, sustainable development, and cultural continuity. Building from Tradition features global case studies that allow readers to understand how building practices-developed and refined by previous generations-continue to be adapted to suit a broad range of cultural and environmental contexts. The book provides: a survey of historical and technical information about geologic and plant-based materials such as: stone, earth, reed and grass, wood, and bamboo; 24 detailed case studies examining the disadvantages and benefits to using traditional materials and methods and how they are currently being integrated with contemporary construction practices

Building a Cashless Society : The Swedish Route to the Future of Cash Payments

This book tells the story of how Sweden is becoming a virtually cashless society. Its goal is to improve readers’ understanding of what is driving this transition, and of the factors that are fostering and hampering it. In doing so, the book covers the role of central banks, political factors, needs for innovation, and the stakeholders involved in developing a cashless ecosystem. Adopting a historical standpoint, and drawing on a unique dataset, it presents an academic perspective on Sweden’s leading role in this global trend. The global interest in the future of cash payments makes the Swedish case particularly interesting. As a country that is close to becoming a cashless economy, it offers a role model for many other countries to learn from - whether they want to stimulate or reduce the use of cash. This highly topical book will be of interest to politicians, researchers, businesses, financial service providers and payment service providers, as well as fintech start-ups, regulators and other authorities.

Boundary Element Analysis : Mathematical Aspects and Applications

This volume contains eleven state of the art contributions on boundary integral equation and boundary element methods. Beside some historical and more analytical aspects in the formulation and analysis of boundary integral equations also modern fast boundary element methods are described and analyzed from a mathematical point of view. In addition, engineering and industrial applications of those methods are presented showing the ability of state of the art boundary element methods to solve challenging problems from different fields of applications. This book is addressed to researchers, graduate students and practitioners working on and using boundary element methods. All contributions also show the great achievements of interdisciplinary research between mathematicians and engineers, with direct applications in industry.

Auriculothérapie : Acupuncture auriculaire = Auriculotherapy : Auricular acupuncture

The auricle is a privileged place to observe and treat patients reflexively. It is endowed with both a particularly rich innervation, and brief connections with the higher nervous centers. It constitutes both a reading pavilion, to observe information coming from the organs and nerve endings of the skin, and a control pavilion to help correct abnormal information. It is a lookout post, placed bypassing the brainstem, on the path connecting the organs and the brain. It thus allows a fair control and an effective intervention. In this medical treatise on Auriculotherapy, historical and scientific data, medical explanations and bibliographical references are presented.

Assessing Climate Change : Temperatures, Solar Radiation, and Heat Balance

The chapters of the book attempt to answer a number of essential questions in relation to global warming and climate change. He begins by showing how the earth’s climate has varied in the past, discussing ice ages, the Holocene period since the end of the last ice age, particularly during the past 1000 years. He investigates the reliability of "proxies" for historical temperatures and assesses the hockey stick version of global temperatures for the past millennium. To do this effectively he looks carefully at how well near surface temperatures of land and ocean on earth have been monitored during the past 100 years or more, and looks at the utility and significance of a single global average temperature
