Sketching for Architecture + Interior Design

The debate surrounding hand drawing versus computer-generated imagery has become a hot topic. Having grown up with computers, today's interior design and architecture students are extremely adept at creating computer imagery, but often lack confidence in their freehand sketching skills, or do not know how to sketch at all. Sketching, and the careful observation that it entails, is essential for the successful development of the next generation of designers. Forty-five step-by-step exercises take the student from the simple three-dimensional forms of furniture, to interiors, to complex building exteriors and cityscapes. Technical topics covered include tools, line weights, perspective, proportion, composition, shading, serial views, and context. Exercises are illustrated with beautiful sketches specially created by the author. Sketching for Architecture and Interior Design is an indispensable and practical guide for students wishing to master the art of looking and sketching.

Signs of Logic : Peircean Themes on the Philosophy of Language, Games, and Communication

This work sheds considerable new light on these and other aspects of Peirce’s philosophy and his pragmatic theory of meaning. Many of his most significant writings in this context reflect his later thinking, covering roughly the last 15-20 years of his life, and they are still unpublished. Drawing comprehensively from his unpublished manuscripts, the book offers a fresh and rich picture of this remarkable man’s original involvement with logical aspects of thought in action.

Shipping and Globalization in the Post-War Era : Contexts, Companies, Connections

This volume highlights the contribution of the shipping industry to the transformations in business and society of the postwar era. Shipping was both an example and an engine of globalization and structural change. In turn, the industry experienced and pioneered, mirrored and enabled key developments that led to the present-day globalized economy. Contributions address issues such as the macro-level shift of shipping’s centre of gravity from Europe to Asia, the political and legal frameworks within which it developed, the strategies and performance of both successful and unsuccessful firms, and the links between the shipping industry and the wider economy and society. Without shipping and its ability to forge connections and networks of a global reach, the modern world would look very different.

Shape Analysis and Structuring

Several techniques have been developed in the literature for processing different aspects of the geometry of shapes, for representing and manipulating a shape at different levels of detail, and for describing a shape at a structural level as a concise, part-based, or iconic model. Such techniques are used in many different contexts, such as industrial design, biomedical applications, entertainment, environmental monitoring, or cultural heritage. This book covers a variety of topics related to preserving and enhancing shape information at a geometric level, and to effectively capturing the structure of a shape by identifying relevant shape components and their mutual relationships.

Sexual Partnering, Sexual Practices, and Health

Sexual risk behaviors have inspired profound ideas and effective teamwork. But as the early history of AIDS demonstrates, when sexual practice is part of the equation, the same bold thinkers may be stymied, or just silent. Safe sex and monogamy have been proposed as answers to a gamut of social problems, but there is frequently little consensus on what these terms mean. Sexual Partnering, Sexual Practices, and Health replaces myth and stereotype with meticulously documented findings on real people and their behaviors in their social, environmental, and individual contexts. Author Sana Loue examines the range of partnerships not only in the U.S. but also Europe and the developing world, focusing on both consenting relationships and exploitative sexual interactions.

Sex Work, Health, and Human Rights : Global Inequities, Challenges, and Opportunities for Action

This book provides a comprehensive overview of the health inequities and human rights issues faced by sex workers globally across diverse contexts, and outlines evidence-based strategies and best practices. Sex workers face severe health and social inequities, largely as the result of structural factors including punitive and criminalized legal environments, stigma, and social and economic exclusion and marginalization. Although previous work has largely emphasized an elevated burden and gaps in HIV and sexually transmitted infection (STI) services in sex work, less attention has been paid to the broader health and human rights concerns faced by sex workers. This contributed volume addresses this gap.

Sequence Analysis and Modern C++ : The Creation of the SeqAn3 Bioinformatics Library

Every developer who previously worked with C++ will enjoy the in-depth chapter on important changes in the language from C++11 up to and including C++20. In contrast to many resources on Modern C++ that present new features only in small isolated examples, this book represents a more holistic approach: readers will understand the relevance of new features and how they interact in the context of a large software project and not just within a "toy example". Previous experience in creating software with C++ is highly recommended to fully appreciate these aspects. SeqAn3 is a new, re-designed software library. The conception and implementation process is detailed in this book, including a critical reflection on the previous versions of the library. This is particularly helpful to readers who are about to create a large software project themselves, or who are planning a major overhaul of an existing library or framework. While the focus of the book is clearly on software development and design, it also touches on various organisational and administrative aspects like licensing, dependency management and quality control.

Semantics, Web and Mining ; Joint International Workshop, EWMF 2005 and KDO 2005, Porto, Portugal, October 3-7, 2005, Revised Selected Papers

Finding knowledge – or meaning – in data is the goal of every knowledge d- covery e?ort. Subsequent goals and questions regarding this knowledge differ among knowledge discovery (KD) projects and approaches. One central question is whether and to what extent the meaning extracted from the data is expressed in a formal way that allows not only humans but also machines to understand and re-use it, i. e. , whether the semantics are formal semantics. Conversely, the input to KD processes di?ers between KD projects and approaches. One central question is whether the background knowledge, business understanding, etc. that the analyst employs to improve the results of KD is a set of natural-language statements, a theory in a formal language, or somewhere in between.

Semantic Multimedia and Ontologies : Theory and Applications

Taking a step-by-step approach, and drawing on the expertise of key researchers in the multimedia and knowledge domains, this book guides the reader through the fundamental enabling technologies of ontologies (for example MPEG-7 and OWL), analysis, context and reasoning, to commercially interesting applications including personalised content summarisation, 3D modelling and management of scientific data. All relevant topics are covered; including ontologies for low level multimedia feature representation, higher level multimedia systems representations, application of multimedia ontologies for visual analysis, and usage of multimedia and knowledge technologies for applications. The authors aggregate relevant disciplines including knowledge representation, multidimensional signal processing, logic, artificial intelligence and machine learning to provide a coherent picture of the different strands of research that need to be combined in order to achieve semantic multimedia applications.
