Networks and Geographies of Global Social Policy Diffusion : Culture, Economy, and Colonial Legacies

This book analyses the global diffusion of social policy as a process driven by multiplex ties between countries in global social networks. The contributions analyze links between countries via global trade, colonial history, similarity in culture, and spatial proximity. Networks are viewed as the structural backbone of the diffusion process, and diffusion is anlaysed via several subfields of social policy, in order to interrogate which network dimensions drive this process.

Network Performance Analysis : Using the J Programming Language

This useful volume introduces concepts and principles of network performance analysis by example, using the J programming language. J is rich in mathematical functionality, which makes it an ideal tool for analytical methods. The book favours a practical approach and develops functions in J to demonstrate mathematical concepts, thereby enabling readers to explore the underlying principles behind network performance analysis. In addition, this allows the subject to become more accessible to those who, although have a mathematical background, are not pure mathematicians.

Net-Centric Approaches to Intelligence and National Security

Net-Centric Approaches to Intelligence and National Security considers the web architectures and recent developments that make net-centric approaches for intelligence and national security possible. The development of net-centric approaches for intelligence, national & homeland security applications has become a major concern in many areas such as defense intelligence and national and international law enforcement agencies, especially since the terrorist attacks of 9/11. Net-Centric Approaches to Intelligence and National Security presents developments in information integration and recent advances in web services including the concept of the semantic web. Discovery analysis and management of web-available data pose a number of interesting challenges for research in web-based management systems. Intelligent agents and data mining are among the techniques employed. A number of specific systems that are net-centric based in various areas of military applications, intelligence and law enforcements are presented utlilizing one or more of such techniques Net-Centric Approaches to Intelligence and National Security is designed for a professional audience of researchers and practitioners in industry. This volume is also suitable for graduate-level students in computer science.

Neoproterozoic Geobiology and Paleobiology

The Neoproterozoic Era (1000-542 million years ago) is a geological period of dramatic climatic change and important evolutionary innovations. Repeated glaciations of unusual magnitude occurred throughout this tumultuous interval, and various eukaryotic clades independently achieved multicellularity, becoming more complex, abundant, and diverse at its termination. Animals made their first debut in the Neoproterozoic too. The intricate interaction among these geological and biological events is a centrepiece of Earth system history, and has been the focus of geobiological investigations in recent decades. The purpose of this volume is to present a sample of views and visions among some of the growing numbers of Neoproterozoic workers. The contributions represent a cross section of recent insights into the field of Neoproterozoic geobiology.

Neo-Liberalism, State Power and Global Governance

Part One explores the pattern of national differences in the exercise of state power in a variety of industrialized and developing economies, despite the pressure to converge towards the dominant neo-liberal paradigm. Part Two analyses a variety of trans-national policy prescriptions for neo-liberalism and state power. Part Three explores whether the governance of labour markets is a special case in the global economy. Part Four sets out the need for institutional reform of the neo-liberal order in trade and finance. The volume concludes that there is the prospect of a more plural approach to state power and global governance, and one that recognizes the importance of the public domain of citizenship for delivering the global public goods of security, prosperity and environmental sustainability in the twenty-first century.

Neo-Liberalism, Globalization and Human Capital Learning : Reclaiming Education for Democratic Citizenship

Throughout the world, neoliberalism functions to decouple learning from the most important elements of civic education, transforming education into training and students into consumers. Neoliberalism, Globalization, and Human Capital Learning is an enormously important book that reveals in painstaking detail how neoliberal ideology destroys critical education. But it does much more. It also provides the insights and tools for educators to both overcome the market-based attack on critical education and address schooling as a democratic public sphere and the classroom as a laboratory for the nurturing of critical agency and social responsibility. This dynamic book should stir a public outcry among concerned citizens and educators through out the globe.

Navigating Numeracies : Home/School Numeracy Practices

The book aims to further understanding of why some pupils have low achievement in numeracy in the school context. The authors aim to achieve this by a relatively original view that focuses on numeracy as a social practice. They report on their investigations into the meanings and uses of numeracy in school and home and community contexts, using ethnographic-style approaches, including formal and informal interviews and observations. The book will be useful for policy, practice and further research into the teaching and learning of mathematics in schools. It will therefore be of interest to policy makers, teachers and practitioners, academics and practitioners in teacher education, education researchers, and parents and community leaders.
