L'obesità costituisce il problema nutrizionale più frequente nei paesi industrializzati. In Italia, un bambino su quattro è soprappeso, uno su dieci è obeso. Inoltre, i risultati di recenti indagini epidemiologiche suggeriscono che il numero dei bambini obesi sembra destinato ad aumentare ulteriormente. L'obesità esordita in età giovanile costituisce un problema soprattutto a causa di due fattori: la persistenza dell'obesità in età adulta e l'elevato rischio di morbilità: in più del 50% dei casi il bambino obeso mantiene il suo eccesso ponderale anche in età adulta. L'estensione del fenomeno obesità ed il suo progressivo aggravarsi impongono la realizzazione di efficaci interventi preventivi e terapeutici. Questo volume riporta i più recenti aggiornamenti sui fattori genetici, metabolici e psicologici coinvolti nel determinare lo sviluppo dell'obesità nell'età evolutiva, e suggerimenti basati sull'evidenza scientifica per il suo trattamento.

Rise and Fall of Epithelial Phenotype: Concepts of Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition
Epithelial phenotype is a dynamic stage of differentiation that can be modulated during several physiological or pathological events. The rapid conversion to a mesenchymal-like phenotype is called an epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). The Rise and Fall of Epithelial Phenotype is the first book to comprehensively introduce the concept of EMT. The first part of this volume describes main examples and models and explains their physiological relevance. These examples include hydra morphogenesis, gastrulation in mouse, drosophila and sea urchin, as well as neural crest cell migration and heart morphogenesis in vertebrates. Part two reviews in detail, specific EMT molecular pathways covering extracellular induction, transduction and transcription response and modulation of cell-cell adhesion structures. It emphasizes new specific pathways with potential medical applications. EMTs can also be linked to pathological events such as wound healing and cancer progression.
Rigid Flexibility : The Logic of Intelligence
While most of the current works in Artificial Intelligence (AI) focus on individual aspects of intelligence and cognition, the project described in this book, Non-Axiomatic Reasoning System (NARS), is designed and developed to attack the AI problem as a whole. This project is based on the belief that what we call "intelligence" can be understood and reproduced as "the capability of a system to adapt to its environment while working with insufficient knowledge and resources". According to this idea, a novel reasoning system is designed, which challenges all the dominating theories in how such a system should be built. The system carries out reasoning, learning, categorizing, planning, decision making, etc., as different facets of the same underlying process. This theory also provides unified solutions to many problems in AI, logic, psychology, and philosophy.
