Intersections de deux quadriques et pinceaux de courbes de genre 1 = Intersections of two quadrics and pencils of curves of genus 1
This research monograph focuses on the arithmetic, over number fields, of surfaces fibred into curves of genus 1 over the projective line, and of intersections of two quadrics in projective space. The first half contains a complete account of the technique initiated by Swinnerton-Dyer in 1993 for studying rational points on pencils of curves of genus 1, while incorporating and generalising most of its subsequent refinements. The second half, which builds upon the first, is devoted to quartic del Pezzo surfaces and higher-dimensional intersections of two quadrics.
Interpolation, Schur Functions and Moment Problems
In signal processing, they are often named reflection coefficients. Under the word "Schur analysis" one encounters a variety of problems related to Schur functions, such as interpolation problems, moment problems, the study of the relationships between the Schur coefficients and the properties of the function, or the study of underlying operators. Such questions are also considered for some generalizations of Schur functions. Furthermore, there is an extension of the notion of a Schur function for functions that are analytic and have a positive real part in the open upper half-plane; these functions are called Carathéodory functions. This volume is almost entirely dedicated to the analysis of Schur and Carathéodory functions and to the solutions of problems for these classes.

The development of international trade theory has created a wide array of different theories, concepts and results. Economic students are trained to understand international interactions by severally incompatible theories one by one in the same course. In order to overcome incoherence among multiple theories, we need a general theoretical framework which enables us to account for the phenomena explained by the current theories in a unified manner to draw together all of the disparate branches of trade theory into a single organized system of knowledge. This book provides a powerful – but easy to operate - engine of analysis that sheds light not only on trade theory per se, but on many other dimensions that interact with trade, including inequality, saving propensities, education, research policy, and knowledge. Collections of digital documents can nowadays be found everywhere in institutions, universities or companies. Examples are Web sites or intranets. But searching them for information can still be painful. Searches often return either large numbers of matches or no suitable matches at all. Such document collections can vary a lot in size and how much structure they carry. What they have in common is that they typically do have some structure and that they cover a limited range of topics. The second point is significantly different from the Web in general. The type of search system that we propose in this book can suggest ways of refining or relaxing the query to assist a user in the search process. In order to suggest sensible query modifications we would need to know what the documents are about. Explicit knowledge about the document collection encoded in some electronic form is what we need. However, typically such knowledge is not available. So we construct it automatically.

It is therefore no wonder that practitioners in this area have been so reluctant to adopt advanced computing systems. After decades of research and industrial pilot projects, advanced computing s- tems are now being recognized by many leading practitioners to be strategically - portant for the future profitability of firms involved in engineering and architecture. Engineers and architects with advanced computing knowledge are hired quickly in the market place. Closer collaboration between research and practice is leading to more comprehensive validation processes for new research ideas. This is feeding devel- ment of more useful systems, thus accelerating progress.
