Video Traces for Network Performance Evaluation : A Comprehensive Overview and Guide on Video Traces and Their Utilization in Networking Research

Multimedia networking applications and, in particular, the transport of compressed video are expected to contribute significantly to the trafic in the future Internet and wireless networks. For transport over networks, video is typically encoded (i. e. , compressed) to reduce the bandwidth requirements. Even compressed video, however, requires large bandwidths of the order of hundred kbps or Mbps. In addition, compressed video streams typically inhibit highly variable bit rates (VBR) as well as long range dependence (LRD) properties. This, in conjunction with the stringent Quality of Service (QoS) requirements (loss and delay) of video tra?c, makes the transport of video tra?cover communication networks a challenging problem. As a consequence, in the last decade the networking research community has witnessed an - plosion in research on all aspects of video transport.

UML for SOC Design

The last several years have seen significant progress on two related frontsin hardware and software design for electronic systems. The first is the rapidgrowth in the design of complex System-on-Chip devices (SoC). The secondis progress in adding capabilities to the Unified Modeling Language (UML) tobetter support the design of real-time and embedded systems, culminating in theUML 2.0 specification which is nearing final approval. It is thus an excellenttime to evaluate the combination of these two topics into a unified theme: UMLfor SoC design.

Ultraviolet and Soft X-Ray Free-Electron Lasers : Introduction to Physical Principles, Experimental Results, Technological Challenges

In the introduction accelerator-based light sources are considered and a comparison is made between free-electron lasers and conventional quantum lasers. The motion and radiation of relativistic electrons in undulator magnets is discussed. The principle of a low-gain free-electron laser is explained and the pendulum equations are introduced that characterize the electron dynamics in the field of a light wave. The differential equations of the high-gain FEL are derived from the Maxwell equations of electrodynamics. Analytical and numerical solutions of the FEL equations are presented and important FEL parameters are defined, such as gain length, FEL bandwidth and saturation power. A detailed numerical study of the all-important microbunching process is presented. The mechanism of Self Amplified Spontaneous Emission is described theoretically and illustrated with numerous experimental results. Three-dimensional effects such as betatron oscillations and optical diffraction are addressed and their impact on the FEL performance is analyzed.

Ultrasound of the Musculoskeletal System

A comprehensive reference and practical guide on the technology and application of ultrasound to the musculoskeletal system. It is organized into two main sections. The first is devoted to general aspects, while the second provides a systematic overview of the applications of musculoskeletal ultrasound in different areas of the body. Additional sections address instrumentation, interventional procedures, and pediatric applications. Each chapter of the second main section provides an introduction on clinical anatomy and the essentials of clinical history and physical examination. Thereafter, performance of the ultrasound study is explained and the normal and pathological anatomy is reviewed.

Trends and Issues in Global Tourism 2007

The ITB Convention Market Trends & Innovations has developed into a center of excellence and a driving force for the global travel and tourism industry, generating a much needed information platform. This compilation unites the highlights of the convention in articles prepared by renowned professionals and scientists from the industry. Readers may benefit from this comprehensive vision of the developments which are shaping the str- ture of the global tourism industry today and in the future. This book is indisp- sable for tourism and travel professionals and well as for academics and students analyzing current global tourism and travel trends. The first chapter takes up the issue of mega trends in society and in the ec- omy and analyzes their effects on the tourism industry. In highly developed co- tries, overwhelming demographical change is underway. Schröder and Widmann demonstrate how tourism businesses should adapt to the aging customer base.

Treating Trichotillomania : Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Hairpulling and Related Problems

Trichotillomania has been described in the literature for at least a hundred years, but has only in the past decade received serious clinical attention. Although now a "higher profile" disorder, there is still scant clinical information on trichotillomania. A full-length cognitive-behavioral treatment manual, Treating Trichotillomania (TTM) fills that need. Designing the book for maximum usefulness, authors Franklin and Tolin share their considerable expertise in treating body-focused repetitive behavior disorders (not only hair-pulling but skin-picking and nail-biting as well) in an accessible, clinically valid reference. Treating Trichotillomania carefully defines TTM, differentiating the disorder from other conditions such as OCD, reviewing the varied clinical forms it can take, and setting out its diagnostic criteria.

Timing and Temporality in Islamic Philosophy and Phenomenology of Life

From time immemorial, concern with timing of life has been crucial for the regulation of human praxis as well as for the philosophical quest to understand existence by seeking its meaning. The two used to inform each other, until modernity, when they parted. In spite of the extensive progress in manipulating change and motion, and of the abundance of metaphysical attempts to enlighten human beings about their fate, the puzzling nature of temporality and timing of reality remains controversial. The present collection of studies seeks a new answer by initiating a novel investigation informed by the ancient wisdom of the Greaco-Arabic-Islamic sources and inheritance, on the one side, and the contemporary discernment of Occidental phenomenology of life, on the other, in a common dialogical effort to unravel this great enigma of existence.

Third Generation Photovoltaics : Advanced Solar Energy Conversion

Photovoltaics, the direct conversion of sunlight to electricity, is now the fastest growing technology for electricity generation. Present "first generation" products use the same silicon wafers as in microelectronics. "Second generation" thin-films, now entering the market, have the potential to greatly improve the economics by eliminating material costs. Martin Green, one of the world’s foremost photovoltaic researchers, argues in this book that "second generation" photovoltaics will eventually reach its own material cost constraints, engendering a "third generation" of high performance thin-films. The book explores, self-consistently, the energy conversion potential of advanced approaches for improving photovoltaic performance and outlines possible implementation paths.
