This volume of Lecture Notes in Computer Science contains accepted - pers presented at IDEAL 2006 held at the University of Burgos, Spain, during, September 20–23, 2006. The conference received 557 submissions from over 40 countriesaroundtheworld,whichweresubsequentlyrefereedbytheProgramme Committeeandmanyadditionalreviewers.Afterrigorousreview,170top-quality papers were accepted and included in the proceedings. The acceptance rate was only 30%, which ensured an extremely high-quality standard of the conference. The buoyant number of submitted papers is a clear proof of the vitality and increased importance of the ?elds related to IDEAL, and is also an indication of the rising popularity of the IDEAL conferences.
Foundations of learning classifier systems
This volume brings together recent theoretical work in Learning Classifier Systems (LCS), which is a Machine Learning technique combining Genetic Algorithms and Reinforcement Learning. It includes self-contained background chapters on related fields (reinforcement learning and evolutionary computation) tailored for a classifier systems audience and written by acknowledged authorities in their area - as well as a relevant historical original work by John Holland.

The two premier annual European conferences in the areas of machine learning and data mining have been collocated ever since the ?rst joint conference in Freiburg, 2001. The European Conference on Principles and Practice of Knowledge Discovery in Databases (PKDD) was?rstheldin1997inTrondheim, Norway.

585 different paper submissions were received for both events, which maintains the high s- mission standard of last year. Of these, 335 were submitted to ECML only, 220 to PKDD only and 30 to both. Such a high volume of scientific work required a tremendous effort from Area Chairs, Program Committee members and some additional reviewers. On average, PC members had 10 papers to evaluate, and Area Chairs had 25 papers to decide upon. We managed to have 3 highly qua- ?ed independent reviews per paper (with very few exceptions)and one additional overall input from one of the Area Chairs. After the authors’ responses and the online discussions for many of the papers, we arrived at the final selection of 40 regular papers for ECML and 35 for PKDD. Besides these, 32 others were accepted as short papers for ECML and 35 for PKDD. This represents a joint acceptance rate of around 13% for regular papers and 25% overall. We thank all involved for all the e?ort with reviewing and selection of papers. Besides the core technical program, ECML and PKDD had 6 invited speakers, 10 workshops, 8 tutorials and a Knowledge Discovery Challenge.

The Fourth International Workshop on Learning Classifier Systems (IWLCS2001) was held July 7-8, 2001, in San Francisco, California, during the Geneticand Evolutionary Computation Conference (GECCO 2001). We have includedin this volume revised and extended versions of eleven of the papers presentedat the workshop.The volume is organized into two main parts. The first is dedicated to importanttheoretical issues of learning classifier systems research including the influenceof exploration strategy, a model of self-adaptive classifier systems, and the useof classifier systems for social simulation. The second part contains papers dis-cussing applications of learning classifier systems such as data mining, stocktrading, and power distribution networks.An appendix contains a paper presenting a formal description of ACS, a rapidlyemerging learning classifier system model.
