Information Retrieval Technology ; 4th Asia Infomation Retrieval Symposium, AIRS 2008, Harbin, China, January 15-18, 2008 Revised Selected Papers
This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-conference proceedings of the 4th Asia Information Retrieval Symposium, AIRS 2008, held in Harbin, China, in May 2008.The 39 revised full papers and 43 revised poster papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 144 submissions. All current issues in information retrieval are addressed: applications, systems, technologies and theoretical aspects of information retrieval in text, audio, image, video and multi-media data. The papers are organized in topical sections on IR models image retrieval.

It was our great pleasure to host the 4th International Conference on Image and Video Retrieval (CIVR) at the National University of Singapore on 20–22 July 2005. CIVR aims to provide an international forum for the discussion of research challenges and exchange of ideas among researchers and practitioners in image/video retrieval technologies. It addresses innovative research in the broad ?eld of image and video retrieval. A unique feature of this conference is the high level of participation by researchers from both academia and industry. Another unique feature of CIVR this year was in its format – it o?ered both the traditional oral presentation sessions, as well as the short presentation cum poster sessions. The latter provided an informal alternative forum for animated discussions and exchanges of ideas among the participants.After a rigorous review process, 20 papers were accepted for oral presentations, and 42 papers were accepted for poster presentations. In addition to the accepted submitted papers, the program also included 4 invited papers, 1 keynote industrial paper, and 4 invited industrial papers. Altogether, we o?ered a diverse and interesting program, addressing the current interests and future trends in this area.

Image and video retrieval cont- ues to be one of the most exciting and fast-growing research areas in the ?eld of multimedia technology. However, opportunities for exchanging ideas between researchers and users of image and video retrieval systems are still limited.
Advanced methods for knowledge discovery from complex data
An overview of the field, looking at the issues and challenges involved is followed by coverage of recent trends in data mining, including descriptions of some currently popular tools like genetic algorithms, neural networks and case-based reasoning. This provides the context for the subsequent chapters on methods and applications. Part I is devoted to the foundations of mining different types of complex data like trees, graphs, links and sequences. A knowledge discovery approach based on problem decomposition is also described. Part II presents important applications of advanced mining techniques to data in unconventional and complex domains, such as life sciences, world-wide web, image databases, cyber security and sensor networks. With a good balance of introductory material on the knowledge discovery process, advanced issues and state-of-the-art tools and techniques, as well as recent working applications this book provides a representative selection of the available methods and their evaluation in real domains. It will be useful to students at Masters and PhD level in Computer Science, as well as practitioners in the field.
