Computational methods in systems biology ; Vol. 3082 ; International Conference CMSB 2004, Paris, France, May 26-28, 2004, Revised Selected Papers

present CMBSlib, a library of Computational Models of Biological Systems. It is aimed at providing a list of test problems for formalisms, modeling issues and implementation issues in systems biology. The main motivation for CMBSlib is to stimulate research on the formal modeling of biological systems, by facilitating the exchange of formal models between researchers, and by providing a forum of comparison and validation of not only models, but also modeling formalisms and implementations. Unlike a standardization effort, CMBSlib welcomes the most exotic formalisms and models provided they attack the modeling of well documented biological systems. Models of biological systems written in any referenced formalism can be submitted to CMBSlib. No special format or standard is required. We discuss the advantages of and problems encountered in building such a library, give an example of typical entry in the library, and most of all we invite the community to become active contributors to CMBSlib.

We present in this volume the collection of finally accepted papers of the eighth edition of the “IWANN” conference (“International Work-Conference on Artificial Neural Networks”). This biennial meeting focuses on the foundations, theory, models and applications of systems inspired by nature (neural networks, fuzzy logic and evolutionary systems). For scientists, engineers and professionals working in the area, this is a very good way to get solid and competitive applications. We are facing a real revolution with the emergence of embedded intelligence in many artificial systems (systems covering diverse fields: industry, domotics, leisure, healthcare, … ). So we are convinced that an enormous amount of work must be, and should be, still done. Many pieces of the puzzle must be built and placed into their proper positions, offering us new and solid theories and models (necessary tools) for the application and praxis of these current paradigms. The above-mentioned concepts were the main reason for the subtitle of the IWANN 2005 edition: “Computational Intelligence and Bioinspired Systems.” papers was addressing the following topics: 1. Mathematical and theoretical methods in computational intelligence.

CMOS Cascade Sigma-Delta Modulators for Sensors and Telecom: Error Analysis and Practical Design starts with a tutorial presentation of the fundamentals of low-pass sigma-delta modulators, their applications, and their most common architectures. It then presents an exhaustive analysis of SC circuit errors with a twofold outcome. On the one hand, compact expressions are derived to support design plans and quick top-down design. On the other, detailed behavioral models are presented to support accurate verification. This set of models allows the designer to determine the required specifications for the different modulator building blocks and form the basis of a systematic design approach. The book is completed in subsequent chapters with the detailed presentation of three high-performance modulator ICs: the first two are intended for DSL-like applications, whereas the third one is intended for automotive sensors.

Machine Learning for Multimedia Content Analysis

Challenges in complexity and variability of multimedia data have led to revolutions in machine learning techniques. Multimedia data, such as digital images, audio streams and motion video programs, exhibit richer structures than simple, isolated data items. A number of pixels in a digital image collectively conveys certain visual content to viewers. A TV video program consists of both audio and image streams that unfold the underlying story.  To recognize the visual content of a digital image, or to understand the underlying story of a video program, we may need to label sets of pixels or groups of image and audio frames jointly.
