Advances in XML information retrieval and Evaluation ; 4th International workshop of the initiative for the evaluation of XML retrieval, INEX 2005, Dagstuhl Castle, Germany, November 28-30, 2005. Revised and Selected Papers
Content-oriented XML retrieval has been receiving increasing interest due to the widespread use of eXtensible Markup Language (XML), which is becoming a standard document format on the Web, in digital libraries,and publishing. By exploiting the enriched source of syntactic and semantic information that XML markup provides, XML information retrieval (IR) systems aim to implement a more focused retrieval strategy and return document components, so-called XML elements – instead of complete documents – in response to a user query. This focused retrieval approach is of particular bene?t for collections containing long documents or documents covering a wide variety of topics (e.g., books, user manuals, legal documents, etc.), where users’ e?ort to locate relevant content can be reduced by directing them to the most relevant parts of the documents.

With the rapid development of Web-based learning, a new set of learning - vironments including virtual classrooms, virtual laboratories and virtual universities are being developed. These new learning environments, however, also introduce new problems that need to be addressed. On the technical side, there is a need for the deployment of effective technologies on Web-based education. On the learning side, the cyber mode of learning is very different from tra- tional classroom-based learning. On the management side, the establishment of a cyber university imposes very different requirements for the set up. The automatic analysis of images and signals in medicine, biotechnology, and chemistry is a challenging and demanding field. Signal-producing procedures by microscopes, spectrometers, and other sensors have found their way into wide fields of medicine, biotechnology, economy, and environmental analysis. With this arises the problem of the automatic mass analysis of signal information. Signal-interpreting systems which generate automatically the desired target statements from the signals are therefore of compelling necessity. The continuation of mass analyses on the basis of classical procedures leads to investments of proportions that are not feasible. New procedures and system architectures are therefore required. All this is usually re?ected in successful projects and of course on the papers that were evaluated by this year’s program committee from which the ?nal program has been developed. In our call for papers, we solicited papers on (i) applications and tools, (ii) theory and general principles, and (iii) algorithms and techniques. We received a total of 184 papers, In the end 46 papers were accepted, which are all included in the proceedings and presented at the conference. This year’s papers re?ect the results of applied and theoretical researchfrom a number of disciplines all of which are related to the ?eld of Intelligent Data Analysis. To have the best combination of theoretical and applied research and also provide the best focus.

The conference of the 1st IEEE Pacisc-Rim Symposium on Image and Video Technology (PSIVT 2006) was held at Hsinchu, Taiwan, Republic of China, on December 11–13, 2006. This volume contains papers selected for presentation at this conference. The aim of this conference was to bring together theoretical advances and practical implementations contributing to, or being involved in, image and video technology. PSIVT 2006 featured a comprehensive program including tutorials, keynote and invited talks, oral paper presentations, and posters. We received 450 s- missions from 22 countries and accepted 141 papers among those (i.e., de?ning an acceptance rate of 31.3%). The intention was to establish PSIVT as a t- quality series of symposia. Decisions were discult sometimes, but we hope that the ?nal result is acceptable to all involved.
Advances in Discrete Differential Geometry
On a newly emerging field of discrete differential geometry and an excellent way to access this exciting area. It surveys the fascinating connections between discrete models in differential geometry and complex analysis, integrable systems and applications in computer graphics. The authors take a closer look at discrete models in differential geometry and dynamical systems. Their curves are polygonal, surfaces are made from triangles and quadrilaterals, and time is discrete. Nevertheless, the difference between the corresponding smooth curves, surfaces and classical dynamical systems with continuous time can hardly be seen. This is the paradigm of structure-preserving discretizations. Current advances in this field are stimulated to a large extent by its relevance for computer graphics and mathematical physics.

The Industrial Conference on Data Mining ICDM-Leipzig was the sixth event in a series of annual events which started in 2000. We are pleased to note that the topic data mining with special emphasis on real-world applications has been adopted by so many researchers all over the world into their research work. We received 156 papers from 19 different countries. The main topics are data mining in medicine and marketing, web mining, mining of images and signals, theoretical aspects of data mining, and aspects of data mining that bundle a series of different data mining applications such as intrusion detection, knowledge management, manufacturing process control, time-series mining and criminal investigations. The Program Committee worked hard in order to select the best papers.
