This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-conference proceedings of the International Conference on Information Networking, ICOIN 2007, held in Estoril, Portugal, in January 2007.The 82 revised full papers included in the volume were carefully selected and improved during two rounds of reviewing and revision from a total of 302 submissions. Welcome to ICOIN 2005,the International Conference on Information Netwo- ing, held at Ramada Plaza Jeju Hotel, Jeju Island, Korea during January 31– February2,2005.ICOIN2005followedthesuccessofpreviousconferences.Since 1986, the conference has provided a technical forum for various issues in inf- mation networking. The theme of each conference re?ects the historic events in the computer communication industry. (Please refer to www.icoin2005.or.kr for details.) The theme of ICOIN 2004, “Convergence in Broadband and Mobile Networking,” was used again for ICOIN 2005 since we believed it was ongoing. This year we received 427 submissions in total, which came from 22 co- tries. Upon submission, authors were asked to select one of the categories listed in the Call for Papers. The most popular category chosen was network se- rity, followed by mobile networks and wireless LANs. Other areas with strong showings included QoS and resource management, ad hoc and sensor networks, and wireless multimedia systems. From the outset, we could see where recent research interest lay and could make sure that the theme was still going in the right direction.

It is our great pleasure to welcome you to the Eighth International Conference on Information and Communications Security (ICICS 2006), held in Raleigh, North Carolina, USA, December 4–7, 2006. The ICICS conference series is an established forum that brings together researchersand scholars involved in m- tiple disciplines of Information and Communications Security in order to foster exchangeof ideas. The past sevenICICS conferences wereheld in Beijing, China (ICICS 1997); Sydney, Australia (ICICS 1999); Xi’an China (ICICS 2001); S- gapore (ICICS 2002); Hohhot City, China (ICICS 2003); Malaga, Spain (ICICS 2004); and Beijing, China (ICICS 2005). The conference proceedings of the past seven events have been published by Springer in the Lecture Notes in Computer Science series, in LNCS1334,LNCS1726,LNCS2229,LNCS 2513,LNCS 2836, LNCS 3269, and LNCS 3783, respectively. This year we received a total of 119 submissions on various aspects of - hoc and sensor network security. The Program Committee selected 22 regular papers and 17 short papers that cover a variety of topics, including security protocols, applied cryptography and cryptanalysis, access control in distributed systems, privacy, malicious code, network and systems security, and security implementations. Putting together ICICS 2006 was a team e?ort. First of all, we would like to thank the authors of every paper, whether accepted or not, for submitting their papers to ICICS 2006. We would like to express our gratitude to the Program Committee members and the external reviewers, who worked very hard in - viewing the papers and providing suggestions for their improvements.

he Information Management Systems group at the University of Padua, led by Maristella Agosti, has been a major contributor to information retrieval (IR) and digital libraries for nearly twenty years. This group has gained an excellent reputation in the IR community and has produced some of the best-known IR researchers, whose work spans a broad range of topics.The papers in this book deal with e.g. automated text categorizations, web link analysis algorithms, retrieval in multimedia digital libraries, and multilingual information retrieval. This volume discusses the prospects and evolution of informatics (or computer science), which has become the operating system of our world, and is today seen as the science of the information society. Its artifacts change the world and its methods have an impact on how we think about and perceive the world. Classical computer science is built on the notion of an “abstract” machine, which can be instantiated by software to any concrete problem-solving machine, changing its behavior in response to external and internal states, allowing for self-reflective and “intelligent” behavior. However, current phenomena such as the Web, cyber physical systems or the Internet of Things show us that we might already have gone beyond this idea, exemplifying a metamorphosis from a stand-alone calculator to the global operating system of our society.

The 18th International Conference on Inductive Logic Programming was held in Prague, September 10–12, 2008. ILP returned to Prague after 11 years, and it is tempting to look at how the topics of interest have evolved during that time. The ILP community clearly continues to cherish its beloved ?rst-order logic representation framework. This is legitimate, as the work presented at ILP 2008 demonstrated that there is still room for both extending established ILP approaches (such as inverse entailment) and exploring novel logic induction frameworks (such as brave induction). Besides the topics lending ILP research its unique focus.

“Change is inevitable.” Embracing this quote we have tried to carefully exp- iment with the format of this conference, the 15th International Conference on Inductive Logic Programming, hopefully making it even better than it already was. But it will be up to you, the inquisitive reader of this book, to judge our success. The major changes comprised broadening the scope of the conference to include more diverse forms of non-propositional learning, to once again have tutorials on exciting new areas, and, for the ?rst time, to also have a discovery challenge as a platform for collaborative work. This year the conference was co-located with ICML 2005, the 22nd Inter- tional Conference on Machine Learning, and also in close proximity to IJCAI 2005, the 19th International Joint Conference on Arti?cial Intelligence. - location can be tricky, but we greatly bene?ted from the local support provided by Codrina Lauth, Michael May, and others. We were also able to invite all ILP and ICML participants to shared events including a poster session, an invited talk, and a tutorial about the exciting new area of “statistical relational lea- ing”. Two more invited talks were exclusively given to ILP participants and were presented as a kind of stock-taking—?ttingly so for the 15th event in a series—but also tried to provide a recipe for future endeavours.
