This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the First International Symposium on Computational Life Sciences, CompLife 2005, held in Konstanz, Germany in September 2005. The integration of knowledge in the life sciences is continuing apace with ev- increasingimportancebeing placedoncomputer-basedmethodsofdata capture, analysis, and knowledge representation. Today, our many di?erent sciences are providing us with a sea of information: it is the handling of this in?ux that is becoming a key discovery and regulatory question. For this to happen, it is crucial to establish an open and lively exchange between computer scientists, biologists, and chemists. To encourage precisely this type of exchange, crossing the borders of the sciences, we organized the 1st Symposium on Computational Life Science in Konstanz, Germany(September 25 27,2005).

Computational Discovery of Scientific Knowledge : Introduction, Techniques, and Applications in Environmental and Life Sciences
Advances in technology have enabled the collection of data from scientific observations, simulations, and experiments at an ever-increasing pace. For the scientist and engineer to benefit from these enhanced data collecting capabilities, it is becoming clear that semi-automated data analysis techniques must be applied to find the useful information in the data. Computational scientific discovery methods can be used to this end: they focus on applying computational methods to automate scientific activities, such as finding laws from observational data. In contrast to mining scientific data, which focuses on building highly predictive models, computational scientific discovery puts a strong emphasis on discovering knowledge represented in formalisms used by scientists and engineers, such as numeric equations and reaction pathways. This state-of-the-art survey provides an introduction to computational approaches to the discovery of scientific knowledge and gives an overview of recent advances in this area, including techniques and applications in environmental and life sciences.

Focuses on optical communications for short and very short distance applications and discusses the monolithic integration of optical receivers with processing elements in standard CMOS technologies. CMOS Multi-Channel Single-Chip Receivers for Multi-Gigabit Optical Data Communications provides the reader with the necessary background knowledge to fully understand the trade-offs in short-distance communication receiver design and presents the key issues to be addressed in the development of such receivers in CMOS technologies. Moreover, novel design approaches are presented. A system-level design methodology allows for the impact analysis of different block specifications and system-wide design optimization. Statistical models are used for design space exploration in the scope of jitter tolerance analysis of clock recovery circuits.
CMOS Hotplate Chemical Microsensors
Covers all aspects of successful sensor prototyping: theory of transducer modelling, microelectronics design considerations, system design issues, and issues related to system and device microfabrication, packaging, and testing. A variety of different hotplates for different operation conditions is detailed and a family of metal-oxide-covered microhotplate-based microsensor systems with increasing complexity is presented. These systems belong to a new generation of chemical microsensors and represent examples of the successful integration of nanomaterials, microtechnology and microelectronics.The book provides students, scientists and engineers with an accessible introduction to the field of microhotplate-based chemical sensing, with all the necessary fundamental knowledge included. Clinical text mining : Secondary use of electronic patient records
Describes the results of natural language processing and machine learning methods applied to clinical text from electronic patient records. It is divided into twelve chapters. Chapters 1-4 discuss the history and background of the original paper-based patient records, their purpose, and how they are written and structured. These initial chapters do not require any technical or medical background knowledge. The remaining eight chapters are more technical in nature and describe various medical classifications and terminologies such as ICD diagnosis codes, SNOMED CT, MeSH, UMLS, and ATC. Chapters 5-10 cover basic tools for natural language processing and information retrieval, and how to apply them to clinical text. The book’s closing chapters present a number of applications in clinical text mining and summarise the lessons learned from the previous chapters.

Managed Software Evolution
This book presents the outcomes of the “Design for Future – Managed Software Evolution” .The different lifecycles of software and hardware platforms lead to interoperability problems in such systems. Instead of separating the development, adaptation and evolution of software and its platforms, as well as aspects like operation, monitoring and maintenance, they should all be integrated into one overarching process. Accordingly, the book is split into three major parts, the first of which includes an introduction to the nature of software evolution, followed by an overview of the specific challenges and a general introduction to the case studies used in the project. The second part of the book consists of the main chapters on knowledge carrying software, and cover tacit knowledge in software evolution, continuous design decision support, model-based round-trip engineering for software product lines, performance analysis strategies, maintaining security in software evolution, learning from evolution for evolution, and formal verification of evolutionary changes.
