Wetlands and water framework directive : Protection, management and climate change

This book compares the lessons learned from a wetland-perspective approach to the changing climate and the requirements of the Water Framework Directive (WFD) with regard to environmental conservation. Examples from Germany and Poland are discussed due to the efficiency of their respective implementations of water conservation policies. Although the general scientific interest in specific issues such as wetlands, climate change, nature conservation and the WFD enjoy a well established position in international environmental research, these four elements are rarely considered together due to the complexity of the processes, biased scenarios of global change and subjective policy background. Major challenges involved in carrying out environmental conservation actions that assess the potential impacts of climate change and management plans on water bodies are identified.

Vergleichsweise menschlich? : Ambulante Sanktionen als Alternative zur Freiheitsentziehung aus europäischer Perspektive = Comparatively human?: Outpatient sanctions as an alternative to imprisonment from a European perspective

Ambulatory sanctions are often seen as a humane alternative to deprivation of liberty. The nature of intervention, the perspective of those affected and the expansion of the network of social control are overlooked. The transfer of sanction practices between legal cultures requires minimum human rights standards. In addition, there are no control group studies and, in particular, no comparison with non-intervention. Instead of naively transferring a (supposed) "best practice" it is recommended to shift the focus from "nothing works" to an examination of the possibility that "nothing works".

The Impact of Food Bioactives on Health : In vitro and ex vivo models

Describes in vitro and ex vivo models that can be employed to investigate effects of digested food products on the GIT, or specific components thereof. Many such models exist and include, for example, those used to study digestion and fermentation in the small and large intestine, to investigate absorption (e.g. Ussing chamber, epithelial cell systems), and to research the immune and enteroendocrine responses (e.g. macrophages, dendritic cells, co-cultures). In each case, these respective assays and models are discussed, and tips and tricks concerning their proper use are given. The Impact of Food Bioactives on Health: In Vitro and Ex Vivo Models is an asset to researchers wishing to study the health benefits of their foods and food bioactives of interest. The book highlights which in vitro/ex vivo assays are of greatest relevance to their goals, what sort of outputs/data can be generated, and highlights the strengths and weaknesses of the various assays. It is also an important resource for under-graduate students in the ‘food and health’ arena.

The Early Years : Child well-being and the role of public policy

The Early Years analyzes the development of Latin American and Caribbean children and makes a compelling case for government intervention in what is instinctively a family affair. Spending on effective programs for young children is an investment that, if done well, will have very high returns, while failure to implement such programs will lower the returns on the hefty investments being made in primary, secondary, and higher education. Policies for young children belong at the core of a country's development agenda, alongside policies to develop infrastructure and strengthen institutions. However, if the services provided (or funded) by governments are to benefit children, they must be substantially better than what is currently being delivered in the region. This book offers suggestions for improving public policy in this critical area.
